Matthias, you have a truly, truly unique gift. My life is enriched by the way you share your insights and projects with us. Your family's lives are clearly blessed also. My favorite part of the whole video is the look on your sister-in-law's face when you were over there test fitting it. She looks like she is just blown away by your project. Money couldn't have bought them such a perfect gate. One day, you'll be on the cover of Time Magazine.
You are just an unbelievable wood genius. I have watched several of your videos and seriously on every occassion I have been blown away with your amazing gift and ease of getting it done with the most of simplest wood working tools. Thanks for sharing and God bless.
I am from Egypt and I have no idea about woodworking and yet I love to watch your work and videos and how you solve problems like these! great job Matthias!
That's pretty ingenious and yet still so simple. I'm almost surprised that something like this isn't on the consumer market. Though, it's so much more satisfying when you make something yourself. I wish I had the room for a wood shop like that.
That is a superb solution to the problem. You really should consider selling that design, I bet one of the baby product manufacturers would love a design like that.
I've been getting into wood working lately and gotta say. Your videos are really inspiring and motivating for me. Sometimes a little too complicating and technical. But still something to strive for. Thanks
Beautiful gate! Did you eventually have to put in an additional locking mechanism? My kids would have figured that out after a few weeks of trial and error.
I really like that solution. It shows the benefits of a custom made solution. Love the way you minimised the fixings, Baby gates are temporary. Buy a blasted countersink, you know it makes sense.
My 2 year old daughter has inherited my love of adventure, and thus is hard to keep at the bottom of the stairs. I think I've just figured out my weekend plans. Brilliant concept!
Matthias, it's one thing to be a Master wood working marvel, but its quite another to also be an Engineer and be able to design. Your Great dude.!!! Thanks
Exactly what I was thinking. What kind of jerk / idiot dislikes a video like this? I can understand if you're not into wood working or kids not wanting to watch his video but really you dislike a video like this? Come on!!!
PERFECT!!!!! I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE, my son JUST started climbing stairs and we have gate at the top but not at the bottom. This solution is FANTASTIC! cute kid! :)
Excellent hun. I once made the same, for the door, in my motorhome, to stop my blind dog getting out, and fresh air in. The space was very limited, so it worked idea.
+Ryan Taylor I think it is too obscure for a company to jump on. Also, the tolerances would be somewhat prohibitive. The parallelogram style leaves no room for error. Cool idea though.
+Bob Hannah So many projects ARE custom fit, so why should this be any different? I'm in need of two baby gates, not on stairs, but in areas where there aren't any available right now that would even come close to fitting, even with some rigging, so any ideas are worth it to me.
BACK TO YOUR BEST MATT! Awesome when you build with your brain. Clever man, mean to babies, but clever. Although... I did expect a custom spring mechanism that opens it automatically and swings it up on the stair angle at the same time - lol. Gr8 video thanks. Good to have you back.
Great. This is nearly exactly what I need for my 10 month old son who's also geeting more and more mobile. Additionally I need a whole in the gate for our cat. But that should be easy to do with one or two shorter spindles and a short extra horizontal rail in the gate.
Your videos and projects are amazing. I keep watching them. You make/do so many clever things. I hope I'll be able to make one percent of it during the next twenty years. By the way, nice to see your wife on the video for a split second.
Butchers wax. I've just incorporated it into my work truck (finish carpentry) and I'm amazed of all the weird little uses its had so far. Love the vid cute kid!
Great Reply Matthias, They also say a sure fired way to become a millionaire in the housing market is to start out as a billionaire. Great job on the baby gate as always, definitely a great way to protect the youngsters. You Sir are an inspiration to all woodworkers. Thanks for the video's.
Looks like it will stay, but just because I love them, I would use 2 small neodymium magnets to hold it against the wall. One in the wood and one on the wall. Maybe held with a dab of hot glue so it could be heated and removed without much or any damage to the wall. Very awesome Matthias!!
It would be cool to add on a wedge track up against the pivot on the base so it clears the stairs the when pushing it back without having to apply upward force
Not if you put some sort of elastic like a bungee chord on the parallelogram from the corner at the top side of the pivot to its opposite (lower corner on newel post side). this would mostly counteract the friction by providing the compression force needed to squash the parallelogram.
Matthias Wandel hi I have shown your channel to my grandad and you enspire us both with your great ideas My grandad is very jealous of your workshop so am I but the best thing is you enspire us all. I hope you enjoy reading this comment you should be proud of yourself mate :D Keep up the good work to.
да, конечно мы следим за Вашим творчеством. Ждем новых видеороликов, спасибо! когда ребенок подрастет то научится приподнимать эту дверь, нужен надежный фиксатор.
Actually this is much simpler than i thought it would be, but it's only the practical side. If i had to come up with the idea, i probably wouldn't be able. It's just so genius, how you solve things.
Thats a cool baby gate i could use something like that to stop my dog getting up the stairs as he sometimes tries to get into our loft space. A parallelogram gate would be ideal for me as the bottom of my stair well is just a small 3 feet by 3 feet space before you have to turn to get into the hallway of the house so there is no space for the baby gate :D
Nice, I like it. Them baby gates that expand across with a bottom rail, how many times have I tripped and almost fallen up and down the stairs with them, GRRR.
After seeing how you kept him out of the planter dirt, Im thinking this kid is growing to like you less and less! But he's learning by observation no doubt. Maybe build him some toys too so you're not always the bad guy!
I’m not sure how this isn’t as popular a topic as your blog suggests! It’s really a fantastic idea that can be adapted to many scenarios. I’m looking to build one of these soon. Would be happy to buy some plans from you to support the page, but I haven’t seen any! Confident as I am in my woodworking abilities, I would love to follow your detailed instruction if possible. Excellent as always
I would suggest putting another wooden hook on the stair wall so you can store it in the open postion, without the chance of swing back in the closed position. Nice Job.
Matthias, I only hope that you are employed doing R & D for some company... It would be a shame if your talents were not compensated accordingly. Outstanding job as always!
Standard railing and stair building code here in San Francisco, states that a 4" sphere cannot pass anywhere thru the guard rail. (That pretty much covers kids too!)
I have been wanting to make this gate for a while now as I don't like that the gate we had would swing out and block the door next to the bottom of the stairs. Well today the older kids just broke the gate so I might just have to make one like yours tonight to keep the littlest one safe.
genius, sir you have serious skills, a wood master

As a father of six. I gotta say this is a sweet idea! Awesome Job!

You know Gavin, I agree.
Oh man, lol. Of course my toddler would comment on the video about baby gates. Guess I better put a password on my phone
I am from Egypt and I have no idea about woodworking and yet I love to watch your work and videos and how you solve problems like these! great job Matthias!

Oh, as they say, you could make a small fortune with woodworking. But you have to start with a large fortune.
perhaps you could have waxed the pivots to make them not creek
Yes, I would see the problem of having a creek at the bottom of the stairs, it would cause water damage and possibly flood the house.
+RC Central you're such an ass and I really admire it :) that's exactly what I would say
Dear Ass King,
I try my best to be the assiest ass possible, Thankyou.
Corassinally yours,
RC Central.
powder or chalk is better. or as the wax buffs in, itll creak more
Dillon DeSalvo i havent laughed that hard for awhile. thanks!
Thanks
Matthias you are nothing short of a Genius ! Excellent job, and to see it serving its purpose was priceless !
Beautiful gate! Did you eventually have to put in an additional locking mechanism? My kids would have figured that out after a few weeks of trial and error.

i just love this guy. he has some really amazing ideas!! god bless him!
My 2 year old daughter has inherited my love of adventure, and thus is hard to keep at the bottom of the stairs. I think I've just figured out my weekend plans. Brilliant concept!
You have a gift, Matthias, for simple, elegant solutions... Chuck
Matthias, it's one thing to be a Master wood working marvel, but its quite another to also be an Engineer and be able to design. Your Great dude.!!! Thanks
Great work Matthias. Clever as usual! I'm sure the parents are pleased with the product.
Bravo. That's a lucky boy with such an inventive uncle as yourself. Top marks. 😊
A beautiful child has a mechanical genius for an uncle who shares his giftedness on UA-cam, and eight stupid people don't like this video.
Exactly what I was thinking. What kind of jerk / idiot dislikes a video like this? I can understand if you're not into wood working or kids not wanting to watch his video but really you dislike a video like this? Come on!!!
they probably hav an ugly baby and can't do wood stuff
True
This is fantastic, when the baby outgrows it, its makes a really neat clothes dryer for the laundry room.
awesome, totally awesome ! you, Ron Walters and Chris Hadfield are 3 awesome Canadians..This has been a great week.
Wow agian. that Nephew is very lucky I can,t wait to see all the cool toys you will make for him.
I made one of these when my baby started attempting the stairs. Great idea! Thanks
Another necessity being the Mother of Invention project well done!!
Very creative and practical! Nice job!!
Matthias, Great project, your brother is very lucky to have you.
This is such an elegant and beautiful solution!
If you haven't already, you should get a provisional patent and sell this idea.
+Ryan Taylor I think it is too obscure for a company to jump on. Also, the tolerances would be somewhat prohibitive. The parallelogram style leaves no room for error. Cool idea though.

This idea has existed for decades.
There are identical products you can buy everywhere. Pretty sure they had this more than half a century ago.
Patents are cancer.
If you have such an amazing idea, execute it better than another would.
Copycats won't outsell you if your product is superior.
I loved his baby. Congratulations! I appreciate your Good job with woods. Thanks.
excelente idea, como siempre un reconocimiento a su trabajo

Mathias, you sir are an ingenious woodworker!
Great Reply Matthias, They also say a sure fired way to become a millionaire in the housing market is to start out as a billionaire. Great job on the baby gate as always, definitely a great way to protect the youngsters. You Sir are an inspiration to all woodworkers. Thanks for the video's.

Wouldn't friction make that difficult?

So happy to see somebody using a "manual" screwdriver.
this is seriously the best one... damn So Smart!
It is amazing what you can build with proper tools!
Brilliant, as always, thanks for making the videos Matthias...
Excellent job....love your workshop!
what a great idea. well done matthias.
Creaky yet awesome as always!
Matthias Wandel hi I have shown your channel to my grandad and you enspire us both with your great ideas

Keep up the good work to.
I like what you did a LOT ! This is very clever. Whats your job ?
I love watching and learning from your video's.
Again, another nice piece of work!
Easy. Put concrete in bucket, use wooden stick to stir it. Done!
That was a pretty neat little solution you came up with. Kinda looked like your nephew was about to take a number there at the end.
Such a cute kid. Such a cool project. I love your videos.
matthias i love ur work, u work real precisely keep it up
Hey! What a cute child! Thanks for the idea!
Ola Matthias , uau ,cadeia para bebês ! Brincadeira .
Muito bom , aliás como sempre . Parabéns
Ah , Ukulele também muito bom !
Actually this is much simpler than i thought it would be, but it's only the practical side. If i had to come up with the idea, i probably wouldn't be able. It's just so genius, how you solve things.
ótimo projeto, parabéns!!!!
You are awesome! As usual, great job. Thank you!
Fantastic project!
Slick solution and a pleasure to watch.
you are unbelievable!
congratulations, man....
Such a cute baby!
Very Clever, and fine craftsmanship.
This looks great. You might think of some kind of latch so baby doesn't pull it away from wall while it is open.

I really enjoy your videos! Thanks

Fantastic design!
Never heard of it . What is it?
After seeing how you kept him out of the planter dirt, Im thinking this kid is growing to like you less and less! But he's learning by observation no doubt. Maybe build him some toys too so you're not always the bad guy!
This guy does it like a BOSS!
What a cute baby!
oh gosh the baby is so cute~ XD Thats an awesome innovation you've got there.
Let's hope that action is only operated by adults. The top bar is actually wide enough, you don't even touch the spindles.
Such a great idea!!
Beautiful job, "grate" design and execution.
I’m not sure how this isn’t as popular a topic as your blog suggests! It’s really a fantastic idea that can be adapted to many scenarios. I’m looking to build one of these soon. Built one out of scrap. Came out great. Building a second one soon!
Matthias, another awesome idea!
Love your work and thanks for sharing the high quality video :)
I would suggest putting another wooden hook on the stair wall so you can store it in the open postion, without the chance of swing back in the closed position. Nice Job.

Very clever. Nice vid. Thanks.
I love it Great idea. and nice work.
Cute baby... Nice gate... He will be able to lift it sooner than you think. I'm sure you will solve that when the time comes...
Very clever. As all of your inventions. Keep them coming! :D
Man, I wish I had an uncle as cool as this!
Great stuff - our son is in the same age!
you could get the creaking sound out with bees wax in all the joints but I like that sound. very nice video.
La haré para mi nieto Gracias!! Saludos.

protect a baby was what occupied my last carpentry projects.
