I had emigrated to the USA before this era but, I remember watching this game at a bar in Queens. I have never seen such naked hatred and hostility at any sporting occasion like this match - and regrettably, it was ALL coming from the home supporters. Billy Bingham was a horses ass for doing what he did before, during and, after this game - his remarks and conduct just poured gasoline on the occasion. I was not surprised to read afterwards about Jack Charlton's remarks to Bingham. It was a ridiculous scene - the Northern Ireland fans were able to travel to Dublin to attend the earlier meeting of the teams without any sense of danger or the need for a massive security operation to protect them. For the return fixture (this particular video record), the FAI CAUTIONED/WARNED the Rep. of Ireland fans NOT TO ATTEND the game in Belfast!! That very night, we all saw why.

In order to be "re-united" it would have to have been united in the first place. The only time it had been united was as a Lordship, then a kingdom and then the Act of Union in 1801. Still, I'd welcome the Republic of Ireland back into the UK enthusiastically. No, seriously. Won't happen, but I'd be up for it.

I don't think north-west England has a team, never mind an international side.
As for Northern Ireland, here's a few facts:
There are some 65,000 or so English people living there, out of a population of 1.8 million.
Most of the settlers into Ulster (which includes Donegal, which was heavily settled in the 1600s) were Scottish.
Many of the Scots settlers would have been descended from the people who gave Scotland its name: the Scotti, who had settled in western Scotland from Ireland. So, a sort of homecoming then.
These same settlers for north-eastern Ireland brought the Gaelic language with them. Scots Gaelic is a descendant of old Irish Gaelic.
Not all of the Scottish settlers were Protestant (though most were).
The Protestant Churches in Ireland encouraged the usage of Irish Gaelic. The Roman Catholic Church in Ireland discouraged it.
Many Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland are also descended from Scots, either from Plantation stock or earlier.
Around 95% of the aboriginal inhabitants of the British Isles are descended from the mother of Robert de Bruce. That includes all the Irish people of the whole of the island.
In 1994, the Republic of Ireland's team was essentially an England B Team, with only 7 of the 22 players in the squad actually being from Ireland.
I wish all the best to the Republic of Ireland, but it's nice to see Northern Ireland squarely beating the Republic in the FIFA world rankings, and staying up there since the second half of 2017.
Nice to see how Northern Ireland has stamped out sectarianism in the game so effectively.
Nice to see, as always, Northern Ireland punching well above its own weight, considering the paltry 1.8 million population and the poaching of players from Northern Ireland to the Republic in the last few years.
As the Irish Unionist Party once said, Erin go bragh! ;)

You’re right there, Mal. As a supporter of both sides (if it’s an Irish side, I support it) it’s great to see the disgusting atmosphere generated by the ‘fans’ at this game become a thing of the past.
