My husband carved out the center bottom of a couple of my dummies and filled it with ball bearings and hot glue. It gave it just enough weight. Thank you so much for this tutorial
Normally the icing does pretty good holding it down (as long as I leave it in the freezer for the full 10 mins lol), sometimes the double sided tape doesn't want to stick to the styrofoam so that's why I opt for the icing.
Fun video because you always put a lot of your personality into them. When you mentioned reusing the dummy you said just remove the icing and wash it. For a second I thought you meant wash the icing. Only for a second and then it registered, oh the dummy needs to be washed. Had to laugh at myself. Great job!
Hello! To clean, you’ll want to scrape all the icing off with an offset spatula or with an icing smoother and then just wash the dummy with soap and warm water. Let it air dry or you can dry it off really well with a paper towel and then start on your next master piece!! Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions! 💕
Yes! I have done several wedding cakes using dummy tiers. Just note that if you use it for the bottom tier (of a three tiered or larger cake) the cake will be top heavy so make sure to put a dowel through all tiers of the cake to prevent it from tipping! If you have any questions please let me know! 💕 Good luck with the cake!!
Yes! I would box it up and chill it in the fridge (if you have room) that way the icing will harden up nicely and there won't be any issues before your event. :) Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.
Hi Shirley, I used American buttercream. So just a simple buttercream frosting. You can use whatever frosting recipe you’d like but I have a video with the recipe I used on UA-cam if you’d like to use that one. If you're using real buttercream I wouldn't keep it on there for more than a few days (only because it might mold), but you can buy faux icing and ice it like you would real icing and it will harden and you can use them for display!!
Magic Line makes a product called Perma Ice which is like the consistency of buttercream but gets really hard which is perfect for a display cake. Unfortunately I looked online and I don't think they are selling any at this time. There might be another brand similar but that is the only brand I've used. I've linked the Perma Ice in my amazon store so you can see what it looks like!
@@HamleyBakeShoppe Is there a faux icing recipe we can follow? I've heard of people using lightweight spackle, have you used it before? Does it give a smooth look?
This is American buttercream but you could use any real edible icing or you could use a faux or fake icing if you want to keep your project for a longer period of time.
Will buy cake dummies to learn on but should I use real frosting ??? Want the cheapest way of practicing. Or is there a cheap icing recipe I could practice with ? Help me please
The only thing that I hesitate with, is that the dummy cake is perfectly symmetrical. The edges and such.. because a real cake isn’t that shape, the edges are soft, not perfect. So putting the icing on, kinda doesn’t teach you how to ice it to get the ‘symmetrical’ edges.
You definitely are correct! However, you can use a fine grit sandpaper to soften the edges or you can use a rough grit sandpaper to get rid of that sharp edge all together to mimic the rounded edge of a real cake. I personally like using this method for seasonal cakes I want to advertise without having to bake/fill/ice 10+ cakes. 😅. Let me know if I can help!!

Hi how long can I keep a dummy covered in icing. Tanx

Can you show how to stack a real cake on a dummy cake & frost it?
Hello mam , what kind of icing are you using ???
This is American Buttercream.
This way the only loss is the frosting then.
Unless reusing even by coloring different shades
It's so easy just to wipe off the icing and start a new design! Perfect for practicing your skills or trying out new designs!
Can we clean and reuse them...
And how
Just use soap and water and let it dry completely before reusing!
@@HamleyBakeShoppe washing will not damage dummy? It will make dummy moist for future use???
@@abdaalifaisal8020 you need to let the styrofoam dummy dry completely before starting over.

What your dummy cake size
This was an 8” x 4” styrofoam dummy but you could use any size!
How to clean this after use
scrape the icing off and wash the styrofoam dummy with soap and hot water then let it air dry. Once it’s dry you can decorate it again!
