Patrick Swayze is actually a trained dancer. His mother owned a dance studio. And, his partner also dances in “Flashdance”, another iconic 80s dance movie.
Johnny's regular partner was Cynthia Rhodes she was the wife of 80's icon singer Richard Marx. He wrote his famous song "Right Here Waiting" for her. You also have to watch Patrick Swayze in the comedy "To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar." You will never forget it!
Back in the day, Jewish Americans weren't permitted to join country clubs or vacation in certain places. They were not welcome with 'the gentry', so they built their own camps and summer resorts, buying up cheap land in The Catskills and building everything from scratch. As a teenager, my grandmother and her brothers helped build such a place; they bussed kids up from the city during the summer where they camped out and built bungalows and things. Known as 'The Borscht Belt", the Catskills became the summer go-to for Jews from NYC and the surrounding area. There were little hotels and big resorts. Over time, some of the big resorts became summer sleepaway camps for kids. This movie is set around the end of this era, which started in the 1920s. Many old-school Jewish comedians and entertainers, along with other performers from minority backgrounds got their starts in these places. It's where Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara met and fell in love. Stiller and Meara were a staple comedy team in the day. Wilt Chamberlain was a bellhop at one of these resorts. There are some great stories about the Borscht Belt. Yeah, dancing, canasta, volleyball, sunning - - all popular activities.
Fun facts: it’s based on screenwriter Eleanor Bernstein’s real life. She even played a small part in film dancing with him. Jennifer and Patrick didn’t get on very well. He was a trained dancer, she wasn’t. That scene in hungry eyes, she literally was just laughing coz she was ticklish but he was frustrated. The last dance was done in one shot. The lift was never rehearsed. The scene where they crawl across the floor to song “love is strange” they was practising and messing about and the person who did film liked it that much kept it in The water was so cold when doing the lake scene his lips went blue. Patrick had to convince Jennifer to play baby. The film soundtrack held no1 spot on the billboard album chart for over four months and sold more than 14 million copies and won a Oscar for best original song. She’s like the wind - is a song Patrick wrote about his wife, other people turned it down but it felt right for this film and he showed them and they loved it. It was $4.5 million to make…. And in box office made $200 million + One of best unknown facts….took only 43 days to film!!!!!!! So Jennifer grey really was learning to dance for film. Hats off coz it paid off and it’s a legendary film and people do that dance as first dance song or even just at weddings or parties. He hated the iconic line “nobody puts baby in the corner”
@@drewrayg As I recall, supposedly Patrick was mean to Jennifer to make the conflict with their characters more authentic, and she just thought he was the biggest asshole. For that reason, she didn't want to do Dirty Dancing after learning Patrick was cast, so he sat down with her to have a heart to heart and changed her mind. There was still tension in this filming, but over the years, their opinion of each other became much warmer.
Jennifer was a decent dancer before this movie. She comes from a showbiz, dancing family. Her dad is Joel Grey. Broadway, tap, but not mambo and tango stuff. She had to act awkward, which she wasn't.
I was 14 when this came out (and a dancer). I bought the soundtrack on vinyl and made my boyfriend (who was 16) do the dances with me in our den lol. Must have did the trick because we are 50 and 52 now...31 years of marriage, 4 kids and 4 grandbabies! ❤❤❤❤
It’s so entertaining to watch non dancers watch this movie.😆 The woman who played Vivian (bungalow bunny) was my ballroom teacher. She actually coined the phrase “noodle arms” for this movie.
The movie has many levels. It's a coming-of-age story for Baby, aswell as a fun chick-flick summer romance and it's also a commentary on social class and the hierarchy of society. I think the relationship with her father is well done, that he has to accept her as an adult and not a girl anymore. But I like the subtle focus on her sister too, as she seems to hate Baby as the perfect younger sibling and spoilt child, but she comes to realize that Baby was trying to warn her about Robbie and they can now bond over their struggles together.
OMG you three just chiming in singing the opening lines of "Had the Time of My Life" just melted my heart! It's moments like that that make me love this channel.
I was six when this movie came out. I use to watch this movie all the time growing up. I use to watch this movie with my mom. Lol Definitely not suitable for a kid still in elementary school, but it was the reason why I wanted to learn Ballroom dance.
The scene when Johnny talked to Baby’s dad, then said goodbye to her in the parking lot, the song playing is Patrick Swayze singing, and it was a hit at the time.
awesome reaction from you guys. another iconic Patrick Swayze movie that you must watch is the 1995 movie called: To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar. He's with Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo.
Whenever someone asks what movie would your bring with you to a deserted island, my pick is always Dirty Dancing. It may not be the best technical film...but its one I dont ever tire of watching and always puts me in a good mood.
there is a second dirty dancing movie called havana nights that came out in the 2000's. not the same characters but swayze does have a cameo. definitely nowhere near as iconic as the original but still pretty decent (enough so that i've seen it several times haha). i would recommend giving it a chance.
"This girl is pretty good" The actress playing Penny, Cynthia Rhodes, is a trained dancer, famous in the 80s for dancing movies. Also her husband is the songwriter RICHARD MARX ❤❤
I forgot that she was married to him. Thank you for that tidbit! I was obsessed with her after she did Stayin' Alive with John Travolta, in 1983. And, I loved seeing her, as Penny, in this.
Dirty Dancing is one of those special movies that, when it came out, reflected a nostalgia for an earlier, ‘simpler’ time. Now, when I watch it, I get that nostalgia for two different eras-The pre-war 60’s & the mid 80’s as well. That’s a pretty powerful shot of nostalgia🤣
This takes place south of the Catskill Mountains in NYS. They used to have these massive resorts that people from NYC would come to in the summer. Many times, the family would stay there for weeks, while the husband would go back to NYC during the week to work and come back up on the weekends. Many of the Comics would entertain there. The school of Hotel Management at Cornell is a major school. You have to have a 4.0 to be considered.
Is it weird that when I think of Patrick Swayze I immediately think of too wong foo ? Like I know he has this iconic role but too wong foo was just a master piece
I was 21 when this came out - saw it at the cinema 3 times! They didn’t get on with each other very well on set - you would never know!! Patrick is a special guy. Growing up in the tough men’s world of Texas in the 70s - he took up dancing - his mother owned a dance studio. What a talent & sorely missed. ❤ This soundtrack was the 1st CD I ever bought!
When Johnny's leaving and "She's Like the Wind" is playing, that's Patrick Swayze singing. I have watched this movie so many times... it's really great.
Yay! ❤ His mother was a dance teacher and he was a trained dancer, but many didn’t know that. He had a lot knee problems, but he rocked this and is one of my favorites! Him and his wife use to dance together as well.
There were resorts and cabins for lots of groups, but yes, you’re right. Catskills and Poconos. Once air travel became affordable, they were no longer attractive locations.
One of my favorite movies. And it was the biggest kick to see you guys singing along at the end. And to see Zuff getting some dirty dancing in! You guys are fun to watch movies with.
I’m sorry if Patrick asked me to dance with him after I saw how he danced, I would of been floating. I was born in the early 90s but man was he my first crush 😂😂😂❤ may he rest in peace
One does not simply watch this movie without swooning over Patrick Swayze. Also there is a Dirty Dancing 2 but the story has nothing to do with this one. The action takes place in Cuba during the Revolution I think. But Patrick makes a cameo there. And btw one of the main leads is Diego Luna, whom you may know from Andor and Rogue One.
Fun fact, the two lead actors actually couldn't stand each other during filming so the director just kept the cameras rolling to catch some of those snarky looks.
The way ‘Baby’ had plastic surgery after this movie and became unrecognisable 😭😭. More positively though: I feel like that final song will be Rob’s Weddings first dance 🥰🥰😍✨
I think something that many people don't understand when watching for the first time is that abortion was totally illegal in 1963(when the movie takes place) that is why Penny is in such hard shape afterwards, not a real doctor because it was almost impossible to get a real doctor to perform them. Sounding a little bit too familiar these days....
I was so young when I first saw this movie (not even a teenager) that the stuff going on with Penny went completely over my head. But yes, definitely feels like we're going backwards.
I hope America gets their abortion rights back or this will be happening in desperate circumstances and flooding adoption homes. The government are disgusting
I need y’all to watch the super funny movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! It has Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo. They’re drag queens and it’s so respectful and isn’t making them the butt of jokes or anything and they were even trained by real drag queens to make sure they did them justice!
Back in the 50's and 60's the Catskills in Upstate NY were _the_ place to go for summer vacation. A big draw for the Jews in NYC and Long Island. A lot of celebrities vacationed there and performed there as well. Many documentaries about it on YT.
The soundtrack is amazing as the lyrics are fitting to every scene! "do you love me? now that i can dance?!" - "i've had the time of my life! and i owe it all to you", etc.
Kelly Bishop, the actress that plays Baby's mother, was freaking amazing in "Gillmore Girls". And it's not a coincidence that she and Baby's father, Jerry Orbach, looked pretty smooth dancing together. They both have backgrounds in musical theater :)
Patrick Swayze grew up in a dance family. His mother was a ballet instructor and choreographer. I'm sure hundreds of other people already told you this; but - - just in case they didn't. So, yeah, he danced from a very young age, and was very accomplished at it.
This movie came out when I wasn't even born yet but my parents recorded it on VHS and it became my favourite movie instantly. I've watched it about 300 or 400 times I guess, knowing every single sentence by heart
One of the best movies ever ❤ My dad and aunt have cabins in Lake Lure, NC (where most of the movie was filmed), so this movie was a staple in our house lol
There used to be a whole industry in Upstate New York catered to New York City Jews who would “summer” or go on vacation upstate and rent out cottages in resorts built specifically for them.
Patrick Swayze was such a talented dancer. He also did gymnastics and football. He met his wife when she was 15 at his moms dance studio and he was 19 I believe. I’m not sure if his age but he was a bit older. Also he was a singer and during the part where Johnny says goodbye to Baby after getting fired they were playing his song She’s Like the Wind
The song that's playing as Johnny is saying goodbye to Baby is a song by Patrick Swayze. He was an amazing man. He could act, sing, dance, and do some of his own stunts in other movies. RIP, my man.
It’s not a sequel but there is Dirty Dancing Havana Nights. It’s not the same vibe but I really like the music. So happy you guys finally reacted to this movie…such a classic! Patrick’s song in this movie always hits me in the feels.
There is a Dirty Dancing 2! It has a different cast and is set in Cuba during the Castro Revolution. Patrick Swayze has a cameo in it as a dance teacher motivating the main girl to enter a dance competition with a cuban waiter at the hotel she's staying. It stars a young Diego Luna (from Narcos).
I was in junior high when this movie came out (released in the 80’s even tho it takes place in the 60s) and I was obsessed with it. It’s fun to see younger folk watch and react to it
One of my all time favorite movies! The resort is a real place! people can still go there and they having dancing lessons etc. Bryce let’s dance 💃🏻 😊❤ love this reaction guys excited for the next
I’ll forever be obsessed with Dirty Dancing💜If you liked this one, I also recommend Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights with Romola Garai and Diego Luna. Patrick Swayze also plays there, It’s s good movie with a different vibe
There is dirty dancing 2, it's called Havana nights. It's not about baby and Johnny, but Patrick is a guest character there. Havana nights is about Cuba, during 1958 where there were revultions in Cuba, I really loved it, you might love it too.
There is a sequel. It's totally different story and it's placed in Cuba. It's charming in it's own way. I totally recommend watching it. Patrick Swayze has small scene in it also. Love your reactions 😊
Sorry if someone else mentioned this: this resort represented places in the Catskill Mtns of New York which were referred to as the "Borscht Belt" or "Jewish Alps". Many hotels and resorts in the early to mid-1900s would not allow Jews to stay. As a result these all-inclusive places catered to Jewish families. They had pretty much closed down by the 70s.
There is a Dirty Dancing 2 but with different actors. (Haven't seen it) There was also a made for TV remake that was widely hated but I actually didn't think it was that bad. Can't touch this one obviously. 37:27 The song where Johnny is leaving, She's like the wind, is sung by Patrick Swayze. The actor who played the dad was the voice of Lumiere in the animated Beauty and the Beast. RIP.
Dirty dancing 2 us not as good, but sooooooooooo hot 😅 honestly the chemistry between diego luna and the lead actress is so fricking good. It's definitively my guilty pleasure movie...
There is a second film called Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights, my little sister and I were so OBSESSED with it and it's actually what prompted us to go on vacation in Cuba a few years ago we just loved it so much 😅It's not as iconic as this one, but it's still enjoyable and Patrick Swayze has a small cameo in it and it's got Diego Luna dancing I mean, that's all you need 🤤and much like this film, the soundtrack is FIRE!
love when everyone (mostly guys( discover that this is so much more than just a kitchy romance film with dancing (I mean, it definitely is that, but there are important social/political issues in this as well!) If you can/want, check out Dirty Dancing 2 - super overlooked, brilliant music and dancing, set in revolutionary Cuba and features Patrick Swayze in one of his last roles. an absolute banger!
You guys had a blast! hahahahit turned in Karaoke at the end. Loved your reaction, great fun. Point Break, Ghost are also good Swayze movies. And back in the day he also played in a mini series named North and South about the American Civil War
Patrick Swayze is actually a trained dancer. His mother owned a dance studio. And, his partner also dances in “Flashdance”, another iconic 80s dance movie.
he's a good singer too. "She's like the Wind" is a good song.
Yeah some of his songs played throughout the movie
An excellent dancer, amazing actor and great singer/songwriter too ❤❤ A LEGEND DEEPLY MISSED

There used to be a whole industry in Upstate New York catered to New York City Jews who would “summer” or go on vacation upstate and rent out cottages in resorts built specifically for them.
Omg this is my all-time favorite movie 😊 even brought it on DVD just because
An absolute classic i love this movie & have rewatched so many times rip Patrick Swayze
The most unexpected cheer up moment of 2023... you guys singing Time of my Life together at the end. Marvellous 👏👏
Glad yous finally did an 80's movie. You guys need to do more, especially John hughs teen movies
Loved this as a young teen, still love it and will definitley introduce it to my daughter when she’s a bit older than she us now.
It still holds up!
RIP Patrick Swayze, my favorite movie of his will always be To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar 😍
F*ck yeah! The 13 year old inside of me is still completely addicted to this movie. Aged me 5 years instantly. Lol
Every single song on the OST is a BANGER! Best soundtrack ever made….that and mortal kombat
Awwww, it gave me such joy to see you guys singing along at the end and really getting into the movie!! Great reaction!!! 😊
'My dear,. Dancing: The vertical expression of a horizontal desire legalized by music. ' (attributed to the playwright George Bernard Shaw)
I was in junior high when this movie came out (released in the 80’s even tho it takes place in the 60s) and I was obsessed with it. It’s fun to see younger folk watch and react to it
if y’all haven’t seen the cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the dead, hot fuzz, and the world’s end) you should definitely check it out
One of my all time favorite movies! The resort is a real place! people can still go there and they having dancing lessons etc. Bryce let’s dance 💃🏻 😊❤ love this reaction guys excited for the next
35:25 Patrick Swayze was a muscular delicate man. He was a dancer from before he was an actor (ballet I think) so he was strong but “compact”
Yes! So muscular but delicate in To Wong Foo, as a Drag Queen!
I’ll forever be obsessed with Dirty Dancing💜If you liked this one, I also recommend Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights with Romola Garai and Diego Luna. Patrick Swayze also plays there, It’s s good movie with a different vibe
He was an amazing ballet dancer and planned on a career in dance until he damaged his knee. He was in constant pain when filming this
I agree about 80s movies feeling nostalgic I have always said this even tho I was not alive in the 80s lol
She’s like the Wind: performed by Patrick Swayze himself. That song used to make me laugh as a kid.
One of my all-time favorites! The happiness I felt when this popped up! ✨
The song playing when he says bye to baby and leaves, Patrick swayze wrote and sings
I can’t even explain how excited I am for this video. Thank youuuuuuuu. I love y’all!🫶🏻❤️
There is a Dirty Dancing 2 but with different actors. (Haven't seen it) There was also a made for TV remake that was widely hated but I actually didn't think it was that bad. Can't touch this one obviously. 37:27
The song where Johnny is leaving, She's like the wind, is sung by Patrick Swayze.
There is a second film called Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights, my little sister and I were so OBSESSED with it and it's actually what prompted us to go on vacation in Cuba a few years ago we just loved it so much 😅It's not as iconic as this one, but it's still enjoyable and Patrick Swayze has a small cameo in it and it's got Diego Luna dancing I mean, that's all you need 🤤and much like this film, the soundtrack is FIRE!
yaaaaas, I love it so much 🙈
love when everyone (mostly guys( discover that this is so much more than just a kitchy romance film with dancing (I mean, it definitely is that, but there are important social/political issues in this as well!)
If you can/want, check out Dirty Dancing 2 - super overlooked, brilliant music and dancing, set in revolutionary Cuba and features Patrick Swayze in one of his last roles. an absolute banger!
You guys had a blast! hahahahit turned in Karaoke at the end. Loved your reaction, great fun. Point Break, Ghost are also good Swayze movies. And back in the day he also played in a mini series named North and South about the American Civil War
Patrick and his widow used to reside near my family cabin in New Mexico. Met him as a child when he was feeding his horses. RIP
Loved it when you guys sang “I’ve had the Time of My Life”!
Everyone remembers Jerry Orbach from Law and Order,, but he was a song and dance man of Broadway, most of his life including 42nd Street.
