Back in the day, Jewish Americans weren't permitted to join country clubs or vacation in certain places. They were not welcome with 'the gentry', so they built their own camps and summer resorts, buying up cheap land in The Catskills and building everything from scratch. As a teenager, my grandmother and her brothers helped build such a place; they bussed kids up from the city during the summer where they camped out and built bungalows and things. Known as 'The Borscht Belt", the Catskills became the summer go-to for Jews from NYC and the surrounding area. There were little hotels and big resorts. Over time, some of the big resorts became summer sleepaway camps for kids. This movie is set around the end of this era, which started in the 1920s. Many old-school Jewish comedians and entertainers, along with other performers from minority backgrounds got their starts in these places. It's where Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara met and fell in love. Stiller and Meara were a staple comedy team in the day. Wilt Chamberlain was a bellhop at one of these resorts. There are some great stories about the Borscht Belt. Yeah, dancing, canasta, volleyball, sunning - - all popular activities.

Fun facts: it’s based on screenwriter Eleanor Bernstein’s real life. She even played a small part in film dancing with him.
Jennifer and Patrick didn’t get on very well. He was a trained dancer, she wasn’t. That scene in hungry eyes, she literally was just laughing coz she was ticklish but he was frustrated.
The last dance was done in one shot. The lift was never rehearsed.
The scene where they crawl across the floor to song “love is strange” they was practising and messing about and the person who did film liked it that much kept it in
The water was so cold when doing the lake scene his lips went blue.
Patrick had to convince Jennifer to play baby.
The film soundtrack held no1 spot on the billboard album chart for over four months and sold more than 14 million copies and won a Oscar for best original song.
She’s like the wind - is a song Patrick wrote about his wife, other people turned it down but it felt right for this film and he showed them and they loved it.
It was $4.5 million to make…. And in box office made $200 million +
One of best unknown facts….took only 43 days to film!!!!!!! So Jennifer grey really was learning to dance for film. Hats off coz it paid off and it’s a legendary film and people do that dance as first dance song or even just at weddings or parties.
He hated the iconic line “nobody puts baby in the corner”

@@drewrayg As I recall, supposedly Patrick was mean to Jennifer to make the conflict with their characters more authentic, and she just thought he was the biggest asshole. For that reason, she didn't want to do Dirty Dancing after learning Patrick was cast, so he sat down with her to have a heart to heart and changed her mind. There was still tension in this filming, but over the years, their opinion of each other became much warmer.

The movie has many levels. It's a coming-of-age story for Baby, aswell as a fun chick-flick summer romance and it's also a commentary on social class and the hierarchy of society.
I think the relationship with her father is well done, that he has to accept her as an adult and not a girl anymore. But I like the subtle focus on her sister too, as she seems to hate Baby as the perfect younger sibling and spoilt child, but she comes to realize that Baby was trying to warn her about Robbie and they can now bond over their struggles together.

There used to be a whole industry in Upstate New York catered to New York City Jews who would “summer” or go on vacation upstate and rent out cottages in resorts built specifically for them.

Patrick Swayze was such a talented dancer. He also did gymnastics and football. He met his wife when she was 15 at his moms dance studio and he was 19 I believe. I’m not sure if his age but he was a bit older. Also he was a singer and during the part where Johnny says goodbye to Baby after getting fired they were playing his song She’s Like the Wind

The song that's playing as Johnny is saying goodbye to Baby is a song by Patrick Swayze. He was an amazing man. He could act, sing, dance, and do some of his own stunts in other movies. RIP, my man.

There is a Dirty Dancing 2! It has a different cast and is set in Cuba during the Castro Revolution. Patrick Swayze has a cameo in it as a dance teacher motivating the main girl to enter a dance competition with a cuban waiter at the hotel she's staying. It stars a young Diego Luna (from Narcos).

35:25 Patrick Swayze was a muscular delicate man. He was a dancer from before he was an actor (ballet I think) so he was strong but “compact”

There is dirty dancing 2, it's called Havana nights. It's not about baby and Johnny, but Patrick is a guest character there. Havana nights is about Cuba, during 1958 where there were revultions in Cuba, I really loved it, you might love it too.

Sorry if someone else mentioned this: this resort represented places in the Catskill Mtns of New York which were referred to as the "Borscht Belt" or "Jewish Alps". Many hotels and resorts in the early to mid-1900s would not allow Jews to stay. As a result these all-inclusive places catered to Jewish families. They had pretty much closed down by the 70s.

There is a Dirty Dancing 2 but with different actors. (Haven't seen it) There was also a made for TV remake that was widely hated but I actually didn't think it was that bad. Can't touch this one obviously. 37:27
The song where Johnny is leaving, She's like the wind, is sung by Patrick Swayze. The actor who played the dad was the voice of Lumiere in the animated Beauty and the Beast. RIP.

There is a second film called Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights, my little sister and I were so OBSESSED with it and it's actually what prompted us to go on vacation in Cuba a few years ago we just loved it so much 😅It's not as iconic as this one, but it's still enjoyable and Patrick Swayze has a small cameo in it and it's got Diego Luna dancing I mean, that's all you need 🤤and much like this film, the soundtrack is FIRE!

If you can/want, check out Dirty Dancing 2 - super overlooked, brilliant music and dancing, set in revolutionary Cuba and features Patrick Swayze in one of his last roles. an absolute banger!
