If you had to choose between the sennheiser 820 HD vs meze emp. vs similar caliber headphones which would you pick? hey z, you could also tell people about dithering while explaining digital volume handling.
What was that about the bit depth? It sounded completely off from what it really is. Lowering the volume absolutely does not lower the bit rate. The bit rate is a constant, it won't increase or decrease with volume. The thing that decreases with volume is the noise floor.
16 bits is equivalent to 96 dB of dynamic range. That means that as long as you don't play music loudly than 96 dB (which is very loud), then the noise floor won't be audible. 24 bit increases that to 120 dB, but that ear bursting amount of volume is meaningless aside from music mastering where you would want more room for jumping around with the waveform.
Yes, lowering the volume doesn't reduce the bitrate or bit depth, but it reduces the effective bit depth.
The noise floor stays the same (since the bit depth didn't change) and the signal level decreases therefore the SNR also decreases.

There's a lot of room in the Atom, you could mount the Tone Board in there for sure. If you wanted you could remove the iron weights from the Atom too at that point.

The SPDIF Out is only avaliable on the upgraded version.... but who needs SPDIF out on a DAC?
Almost any DAC chip these days does an outstanding job turning digital bits into sound waves. The magic happens after that in the preamp analog output circuits. That's where you want the best you can get in terms of circuit designs.

Concerning your steel drum issue: There is this band called Portico Quartet. They use a "Hang" which is basically a next gen steel drum. Their music sounds amazing. Just in case you should ever be in need of steel drum sounds again and want it to come in a nicer package.

I got an su-8 recently and im vexed because i hear buzzes in some songs that i never heard before. No rhyme or reason either, even only a couple songs of a flac album. Pcm filters did jack shit too. Maybe the ol fulla was covering for em haha
I own the Fulla 2 and use it as a dac. Its the only dac I have so I cant compare, but I do not think it is detailed enough to be revealing, like su-8 probably is.
Welcome to my life with the damn car alarms. The worse part about them is when they stop you have that suspenseful moment when you wait and hope that it doesn't start back up again.

well one of my thought process is why is optical limited? We have internet across the ocean with fiber optic so we know it can carry huge amount of data, far more then copper, so why is limited in audio? Just make a thicker cable if the current standard can't keep up. From the physical point of view you can double the diameter easy, and that will be able to carry more data then you will ever need.
Consumer optical and industrial optical are very different beasts indeed. Your typical spdif cable will degrade a signal pretty quick. But proper fiberoptic can do much more.
There is another company out there that's doing the same thing with boards I just can't remember the name !

you should get a second geshelli enog, plug each into a different thx aaa 789, and run that experiment if you could tell all from one dac and amp vs perfect separation.

my god the bitdepth explanation has been painful
lowering volume affects the dynamic range+snr with 16bits, with 24bits you get pretty much rid of the dynamic range limitation and improves snr, same with 32bits more like the ultimate level. To be clear, it improves the snr of changing the volume, just like an analog knob would affect the SNR.
Dx3 pro uses 32bit as default because its volume is always digital.
I thought that he was explaining a totally different concept, since bit depth is most certainly not going down when you decrease the volume.... If anything, the noise floor is going down when you decrease volume.

In fact more than 16 bits (max 24) is worse for audio quality in overal, bcs everything you get is more unhearable frequencies (+20kHz). Headphones and speakers dont have flat characteristic for that "noise" so you just feeding speaker with something you didnt hear, but in fact theese "noise" can interferemce with hearable spectrum and make it even worse.
But more bits are better for more ability of control.

ESS Sabre DACs use the internal 32Bit architecture to do digital volume control, so even if playing 16Bit, you can turn it down a lot and still get 16Bit.
