    There's a simple reason for round pins: No matter how you put your piece you always have a single point of contact. It's just how circles/cylinders work.

    • @no-lifenoah7861
      @no-lifenoah7861 Рік тому +14

      Well, if you have a piece of quadratically aligned steel you can g
      contact the circle at 2 points exactly, but that's a less common situation

      @@Dannerrrr Maybe it is similar to using round stock in a vise? In that use case it helps ensure that your material is square with the jaws

      @@Dannerrrr look into GD&T, particularly about datum. Placing a flat piece of bar against 2 round pins will precisely define a line in space.

      @@cr1ticalRevenge I know this, but please pay attention to the second part of my question. If the 2 or 3 pins are each at a variable position, you're defining a different line or plane each time. does that still give you some sort of confidence? sounds like a 2x4 block with a radius might be interesting?

    4:13 "I don't understand why people are buying round pins in bulk."
    Round pins are cheap to make: Take round stock, lathe the end down to make the pin shape, cut the pin from the stock, advance the stock on the lathe, repeat the cycle. One lathe machine could do the entire process with two tool arms.
    Cheap to make = high profit for mass production. High profit means it will be extensively advertised to capture market share.
    It's the same reason that 'flat-pack' furniture dominates the furniture industry. If you're not making 'flat-pack,' then the profit in simple pieces is too low due to the competition from flat-pack, so the 'mid range' furniture isn't made, only cheap flat-pack and expensive 'deluxe'/'luxury' pieces.

    • @FireballTool
      @FireballTool  Рік тому +3

      @@FireballTool If everyone makes the same cruddy product with no innovation or differing features to advertise or set them apart then all there is to compete on is brand reputation, price, material/finish quality, and ultimately in a mature product the only improvement to be made is to maximize profit, which, yes, often does not benefit the consumer.

    • @andrewdreasler428
      @andrewdreasler428 Рік тому +2

      @Fireball Tool I'm not a machinist, but at a rough guess, based purely on geometry, round stock of diameter X would be cheaper than square stock of dimensions X by X, simply from the reduced cross section.
      At my last job, working in a plastics injection molding company, I overheard conversations where they were negotiating with their suppliers over price differences of a penny per TON of feed resin, when the final product was less than 2 ounces per piece.
      That's the bane of Unfettered Capitalism, everyone is trying to get Maximum Profit, even if it means making a less useful product for the end user.
      Very few look to Quality over Maximum Profit. You, sir, are one of those rare people, which is why I follow your channel. You not only educate me in things outside my field, you inspire me to keep my own standards high, to put Quality first.

    you forgot about the pins stops that have an allen screw in the top that puts pressure on 3 ball bearings that push out on the chamfer on the underside of the hole and lock it in place and suck it down. Hello Jason of fireball tool.
    I have come into possession of a couple of ball screws that were used as the Z-axis for a 30hp CNC machine. It was replaced because it had .02 slop in it. Not very useful for the machine it was used for originally but I have found it to be incredibly low friction and it looks almost brand new. I think it would be a very interesting replacement for a thrust bearing and I bet you could easily crush your other vise build in terms of clamping force and closing speed. I have cleaned it all up and removed all the grease and swarf.
    Before I cleaned it when I had it clamped vertically in the soft jaws of the forged fireball tool vise I bought from you. The greasy ball thread nut would start rotating down the ball thread with the help of gravity, clearly some very low friction involved in this screw. If I sent you this ball thread would you be interested in doing another vise build video for “science”? Not sure if you will see this since the video is two months old but this is about the only way I can find to contact you if anyone else knows a way to contact him please do share.

    "a little slop" uh my guy thats alot actually.. and you don't need that much.. i mean we use precision ground pins and reamed holes to align our molds for milling and mounting.. and that slop is basically 0 (as they should be or else everything would be out of alignment)

      Welding tables get dirty fast. To tight of a hole to pin tolerance will cause the fixtures to get stuck. There’s a balance between usability and accuracy.

    The pins used for woodworking which are basically the same are round pins with one flat side

    The round pin goes into.. the round hole.
    The square pin goes into.. the round hole
    The rectangular pin goes into.. the round hole.

    As long as your table is flat I see no issues. First world problems. Most of us are blessed to have a flat cement floor to work off of.

    I made some fence blocks for my wood working bench and hot damn they work great I can only imagine how nice these would be for welding. Cause I'm to poor to afford a welding fixture table but one day maybe

    Would it be possible to put 2 extra threaded holes in the bottom that would fit the holes at 45 degrees? It looks like there is space on the fence block.

    I love this channel and watch everything on it, but I have to say for a split second in the back of my mind I was like, he just wants us to buy a bigger more expensive product, but then he showed the pricing and how they are literally only $3 diff and It was like wow ok see a hole part of my brain not just another salesmen, someone who actually just wants to make us knowledgeable about the possible mistakes we have been making.
