I have 2 of those Craftsman grinders. Both new in the box. One of them is in its steel case with the receipt dated 9-16-1957. The case and the contents are in new condition. I also have one in a plastic case that’s still in the cardboard box. Probably from the early 70’s I’d guess. I also have the grinder holding attachment that you have although mine is black. Also new in the box. That was the best estate sale I have ever been to. I spent a couple thousand that day.
I enjoyed today’s instructions - I called my Mom from the nurse’s office for a ride home. We stopped & got a hamburger & a Pepsi. Happy New Year All !!!! John
I had one of the all metal Craftsman die grinder. It was a very good tool. I sold it when I closed my automotive machine shop. I wish that I had it, one of the few tools that I regret selling. Happy New Year.
Good first morning of 2022, I hope it's a good year for you and yours sir. You entertained and educated us in 2021, thanks for the effort, time and money it takes to do your thing.
Good stuff Professor! I have a home built, a couple Dumors (both from a rusty dusty mess of a shop and need cleaning and reconditioning). I also bought a hand grinder like that Craftsman. I got it at a pawn shop, and when I asked if it worked, he plugged in in. It started rolling like a gator and scared us both!!!! Worth the 5 bux I spent. Merry New Year!!
Lyle, I don't understand why you doubt your presentations, as a mechanic I enjoy every word about machining. Keep it up Mr. Stewart! Ron W4BIN (retired broadcast engineer)
Pete I will Miss Sears growing up the tool department in Sears was like a candy store to me . since I acquired a love for tools when was about 5 years old since my father and grandfather both were machinists .
Perfect timing. I've been dunging out a deceased machinist's garden shed and recently bought an old Craftsmam 12 x 36. Among the unidentifiable-by-me left behind by friends and family are a couple small motors and grinding wheels. We'll take a closer look when the sun comes up. Thanks for these two videos. Ta-ta, I'm off to search the archives.
Even though I had to walk home uphill in the snow, it was worth staying after school. I have an older Dumore Duo Flex so seeing other applications was a beautiful thing. Thanks Mr. Pete.
I grew up working in a company that did a large business in small engine repair in Huntsville, Alabama. I can remember the large machine that they used to sharpen the reel-type lawnmowers..... like the old hand push mowers and what you see today as greens keeping mowers. That sharpener had a Dumore motor on it.... nice bit of a tie in for me personally. On an off note, it was the one piece of a equipment that I was absolutely, positively never allowed to use. Apparently, more than one employee between 1944 and 1970 was seriously hurt by reel mower accidents.
MR.PETE, IM VEEY HAPPY TO HAVE FOUND YOUR CHANNEL. IT INFORMATION, THE SOMETIMES OBSCURE TOOL & HAVE THEY ARE MEANT TO BE USED. When I worked at a farm equipment repair shop as a young man,the owner used Craftsman electric die grinders. He repaired and hammered sawmill circular saws. After welding on a shank he would dress the pocket that held the saw bit and holder.Al B.
Happy new year!!! Thanks Lyle, for a great 2021, you were one of the few really good things of the past year. The darkness of the year was made better by you and a few other good youtubers. Wishing you and loved ones a great 2022, with all the health and well-being possible.
Bought my Craftsman grinder back in the early 80's from the sears sale catalog, finally bought the lathe adapter on Ebay last year. Your videos are great
Lyle, You're videos are always the highpoint. I can't express enough how much we appreciate your talent, nor your ability to "Learn US" Boys. Please keep it up. Happy New year !! Sincerely, Scott
I found one of the Craftsman grinder holders at an estate sale about 5 years ago, but it took me about 3 years to figure what it was used for. I have the Craftsman grinder with the bail on it. Haven't used it so far. I've never thrown rivets in class, but in second grade I was involved in a year-long crayon throwing battle (small bits of crayon). Had to scrape crayon off the floor under my desk a few times...
Great start for 2022!! Wish all my HS detentions were this much fun, and, oh, BTW, I walked every day to HS Rain, Sleet, Snow Uphill both ways in 1966. Happy New Year sir!
Happy New Year to you and your family, Lyle. Good video about the grinders. As usual a good way to start a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee and your latest educational efforts.
Years ago I used a toolpost grinder with a buffing wheel attached to polish pewter objects (goblet, tankard, candlestick, etc) right on the lablond engine lathe that did the initial turning. It worked but sure was messy.
The Dumore hand grinder is THE tool of choice for bowling pro shops. It's used to work the finger bores punched into bowling balls. (abrasive treatments) Such tools just last and last.
@@mrpete222 Good morning and happy New Year, Lyle. Have you ever heard of the saying that if you harm not a cricket singing on the hearth, you will be blessed wish health and luck throughout the new year? I heard your companion until 6:58. EDIT: Do you reccomend any particular 1/4" drive stubby pawl type ratchet for rigidity in the drive part? For a conversion of an item that I use on a daily basis in the kitchen. My wrists are deteriorating to the point of pain when doing a full rotational movement(crepidation, if you know the term). Reversal or lock in place are needed, but resolution needs to be no more than 12. If you happen to possess too many in your vault, I would be proud to have the opportunity to purchase one from you. Thank you for doing all you do. Would also enjoy seeing Henry working with pawpaw one more time before my warranty expires. Thank you Read less
And another one in the can!!!!!! I had a Dumore with three HEAVY duty collet type tool holders on a flex shaft..Also had a Rockwell that looked like a copy of the first Dumore you showed in this video..Happy New Year to you and your family...May '22 be better than the last two!!
Mr. Peterson, I WAS NOT throwing rivets, but I wanted to see more show and tell so I stuck around. I suppose nowadays they run a 2cd bus for the detention? That way they have it easier to carry home their participation trophy from detention. Thanks for the presentation. Keith / STL MO
I still haven't had the guts to toss my Craftsman die grinder. The connection between the output shaft and the motor shaft wore out, I had used it a LOT over the period from about 1965 until about 2010. --- Yup, mine is/was all metal. I tried to buy parts from Sears, but, as you can probably guess, no luck.
Now that was very intersesting, you got some nice tool post grinders. You need to do a video on your machine shop pointing sticks you seem to have so many. Hope you had a good christmas and new year Mr Pete
Happy new year Mr. Pete . Hilariously I had a Dumore that I gave to a kid at work I didnt realize what I had it was used mainly for hand grinding and just thought it was just a bulky old fashioned tool well if I'd had realized the quality and what it would cost to replace I'd have kept it
Happy New Year Mr. Pete to you and all your family. Nice video, I watched the first but wasn't sure just what they were so the explanation is very much appreciated.
I also missed the bus but it was worth it. Now I have to write 100 times, “I must not talk in class” The old double pencil method didn’t work that well back in grammar school so I won’t try that again.
If I had been at your garage sale, I would have gladly paid $10 for that Dremel kit... Of course, I may have enjoyed a bit of negotiating to get it for 8 bucks🤣👍. In any event, I would left with it😉
Hi Lyle, Happy New Year. Thanks for all the videos this past year. Have enjoyed watching all of them, even though I may not comment on them all. You and the family stay safe.
Happy New Year Lyle and Family ... I got the same craftsman grinder and made an adaptor to hold a flex shaft , I use it on the lathe to sharpen end mills. I wanted to send you pics but misplaced your email add , Have a great year Paul WPG MB CAN
That older Craftsman mount is solid, only 7.99$ they made things with so much more quality now everything is like that freight grinder you have to reset every 10 seconds.
Thanks Lyle for the excellent lesson, as always new interesting things to learn from the greatest machine shop teacher.. Happy New Year to you and your family and I'm locking forward to more fantastic information in 2022.
I have a craftsman die grinder i got new i didnt know any better i should have returned it because its not very smooth. I wonder if a motor shop could balance it? Keep up the great videos.
Happy New Year Mr.Pete. I threw the rivets so I could get more shop time. I don't mind walking home from school because it's faster than riding the bus. :P
The Craftsman that says “Industrial” is the newer one. The $7.99 Craftsman holder would cost $65 today, which is lower than an equivalent one would likely cost if made here, but more than if the exact same part came from China.
Great show and tell. We also find items like that in yard sales and actions. Now we know what to stay away from. Happy New Year young man. Maybe you can start a new Series ( what is junk or maybe bad design ) I will definitely stick with my tool post grinder.
I'm puzzled by the apparent need to dress grinding wheels. Surely the biggest part of the wheel is going to be the bit doing the grinding and wear down - until another bit sticks out and starts doing the grinding. Lots of speed and slow feed is surely the way to go ?
I can't even number the many times I missed the bus. The vice principal just expected me to be there. I ended up having to work for him so it all was ok and I got a little spending money from cleaning the restrooms.
15:15 I guess you were younger and stronger when you tightened that ;) Bolts work better with oil on the working surfaces - the thread and where the bolt shoulder tightens against the part.

Sounded like a cricket or the kind of fire alarms we had in grade school. Oh wow, from Mauston, WI!
I overslept this morning and had to walk ten miles uphill in the snow to get to class and now have to walk ten miles uphill in the snow to get home.
With no shoes or socks either I suppose
Can't believe I've Never seen an old electric die grinder, now I know where the Dremel came from!

Any way, glad you kept us trouble maker's stay after hour's to learn more,,,hehe :)>...Well, time to go out to the shop and get one last day in before we go dw to 20's tonight ,,,burrrr,,,early cold snap for Tx :(
Happy new year. Hopefully you and I will not buy anything else this year
Let's not hold our breath on that, hehe 😁
I think the craftsman grinder with the shorter strain relief is older , going by the label
We have a couple in my tool room
Love the videos!! 👍🏻
