Love how my Ilustrisimo family's Repeticion escrima traveled to both sides of the Pacific Ocean. From the Philippines with uncle Antonio Tatang Ilustrisimo to Stockton, California with Dan Inosanto from my grandpa Regino Ilustrisimo. A world apart, still same flow.

#8 can be a thrust or a slash, I like both. I am more used to the slash version, but I know Tatang did both, as he would change it from time to time, and that and from what I understand though, there was no numbering system by him, it was just kind of agreed upon after.

I am a student of GM Norman Suanico, who was a student of Tatangs, as well as his caregiver and roommate. My understanding of the art comes from him., we drill #8 as a slash , but upon seeing it as a thrust by GM Tony Diego, I asked him about it, and he told me that it can indeed be either, as Tatang as I said above famously changed his attack, and as such it can be either one. Whenever I show the basics from the art to people now I show both ways to do it, and say either one works, it just depends on how the hand lands from the #7, if it happens to be palm up or palm down. palm up I would do the thrust, palm down I would the slash, which is basically just the same as the #9 from that side though.
Such a beautiful art to learn :)

Thanks for clearing that up, gentlemen. I was used to 8 as a slash as well. Still a relative noob, primarily Inosanto-lacoste blend, but train some Lameco, DTS, and Illustrisimo as well.

Nice blend. I am just Ilustrisimo, been learning it for 2 years now, and love the art.
As said before me, depends on your teacher, but both are correct, Tatang would vary his attack, so sometimes his $8 would be a slash or a thrust.
