dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you are stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all the new series on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my girlfriend recently :)
I got the recommended wire wrapping tool and started using it last night. So easy and so handy to strip the wire, then twist and connect LED’s to wire. Next up, wire up the Conwy board with power and connect the LEDs!
I started watching your videos a week ago. All I can say is “wow” you’re so talented! You’ve totally moved the goalposts on my kids’ school projects. Keep it up.
I love the video, I really really appreciate that you didn't rush anything in the video, and maybe double sure to show exactly what all you were doing and what you meant to move around, so that viewers won't get confused by 1 step and then not know what happened. A closer up macro shot would have been nice for the wire stuff you did but maybe you didn't have a fitting camera.
A better way to add lights to my dollhouses! That wire tool is what I need! Wrapping those tiny wires by hand is such a pain and they slip loose. Thank you so much for the links to everything!
Awesome video!! I've always been a bit nervous about doing any electronics on my builds....this has totally changed my view on it...you have explained everything so clearly. Thank you again for doing all of these videos!!
I recognized that wire wrap tool immediately. I was a computer technician in the 1980s and that's how we did our jumpers back then. I was better at it than the men that I worked with at the time. I have large hands for a woman, but they are a little thinner (and more dexterous). than theirs were.
This is so cool, I’ll try it. I love the haunted house, it’s my favorite build of yours. I considered getting a big family printer to print builds like that but we opted for a resin printer and just print windows, doors and details. I honestly never managed to light my daughters dollhouse and now she’s almost a teenager and I got her into my hobby of tabletop gaming through the build of your haunted mansion!
That’s awesome to hear that the haunted house video has brought you two together. Having a printer for small details is what I love. Give the lighting a try, it’s a fun aspect of crafting!! Thanks Natalie.
John you continue to amaze with all the new ideas, techniques and small businesses you work with. This video is great inexpensive way to add lighting to any build. Great video! Keep up the awesome work.
If you've never soldered with flux before you should try it once. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate you. You can find 3.7V lithium batteries laying in the street in ecigs. They're rechargeable and a usb recharge chip is under a dollar if you buy more than 10. CR2032 is a good power source too but maybe you'd find these last longer for your needs.
Have a look at getting a 'Handheld Electric Mini Heat Gun' for the shrink tubing. They are around $20 and much easier to use in tight spots than an open flame. Nice video. I really have to get back into dioramas again.

You have correct soldering technique, which I have to appreciate. However, you should get yourself thinner solder and some flux. It will make your life much easier and the soldering experience much more pleasant. Also I have one suggestion about the wire. If you needed some longer cables, that wrapping wire would probably be a pain. You should consider using some UTP (ethernet cable), you can get it for very cheap (or even recycle some thrown away). Nice thing about it is that you have four pairs of twisted wires, color coded for you and you can use them as you wish. Also, they are usually solid, which will make them easier to route (or feed through thicker walls) in build.
I can see sooo many applications for this wee circuit board I can’t stop at just one! Thanks so much for sharks wth us, would have never known about it or the possibilities!
Imo, the lights need to flicker a bit, they are flames in most medieval fantasy. If that was a choice, maybe on the board, so you could choose if flame, gas or electricity is running through the lights-depending on what your game is-that would add immense realism.

Thank you so much for making this video and the links to your supplies. This made my day. By the way I have made some homemade lanterns in the past. What are using for your lanterns?
This is exactly the video I needed, thanks!. I can't grab all the supplies today, but I will definitely be back to stock up! So, how about if we have 4 diodes all close together in a piece, can we wire them in series or should I do all 4 in parallel? I'm thinking about how many wires I would end up with if each LED had its own pair of wires. I can bundle them all in some black heat shrink, but as they say, less is more.
Conwy is designed for one led per output. However there are some larger LED’s that are designed for higher current. Your standard 3mm and 5mm are limited to a max of about 30mA (eye burning bright) but if you need more there are some that’ll run into the 100ma’s or higher. Beware they will need heat sinking at that point. I think you’ll be surprised how much light you can get from one or two LED’s in parallel to a Conwy board! Good luck!
@@TerrainTronics Thanks! When it comes times to wire everything up I'll see if I can make it work with just one or two LEDs or if placement still leads to needing four.

If instead of wiring the board to the LED accessory, we wire it to a male magnetic connector, then wire the LED accessory to a female magnetic connector, the two connectors would attract and the LED would light up. I think... That would potentially make the system very modular and would allow us to change the LED accessories at will. Do you think that is doable? I thought of this when I saw the Magnetic Connector video on Bevin's Brick World channel.
I prefer to use 2.54m JST connectors. Red and black wires, LEDs fit tight, and are better construction than the cheap junk "Dupont" wires. They alao fit onto header pins but you may have to clip off the locking tab - not needed anymore. I still have my wire wrap tol from the 80a. Never could get it to wrap tight.
That would be nice :) The nice thing about doing it yourself if you can run wires without worrying about length and really customize what you're doing. Honestly I wanted nothing to do with lighting when I first started crafting... it really is simple :) Just follow this tutorial once and you'll wish you did it a long time ago!
It needs one wire (the core) to be stiffer than the other. Ideally, the core, or pin, is a square in shape. It then makes the wrapping wire grip on to the corners of it. When attaching a wire to a standard round, leg of a resistor, it still creates a good wrap, but doesn't grip. You will need a dab of solder to make it grip. Wire to wire, I strongly recommend a "NASA Wire Splice" along with a dab of solder, all covered with some heat shrink. Millennia may pass before those come undone! :)
