WW1 Christmas Truce

- The year was 1914. The warring countries in WW1 had discussed a cease fire to celebrate Christmas, but no agreement was made. However, on the night of Christmas, an unofficial cease fire was declared. How did this happen? Well, many German and British soldiers sang Christmas carols to each other. Then, a few German soldiers approached the British trenches, completely unarmed. The British soldiers were afraid this could be a trick, but they trusted their gut. This then evolved into a shared celebration that included the exchange of gifts, singing, and even soccer. This peace lasted two days and a half.

Fun Fact: Many soldiers got a long so well that they refused to fight eachother after christmas. So much so that they have switched their position to a different trench were there were enemies that they didn't know. They did not have the heart to shoot at someone they played football with...
Wasn't it the general's that rotated the troops to different trenches?
@@frej7422 no. The generals in fact told the soldiers not to make a truce with the enemy. The generals hated the truce because it's a war not a get together.
@@Regimentz. Well of course the generals hated the truce, that's why they rotated the troops to different trenches so they would start fighting again, and they also had snipers shoot the unsuspecting "enemy" to sour relations between the trenches again.
In some ways this very base human mentality is why I think WW3 becomes less and less likely as communication continues to improve. Conflict still happens but at a much more local scale, and the only real threats of global war being a unified force that as a whole desires to expand.

Yeah I felt a sinking sadness in my body seeing the corpses of so many young boys who just a couple months ago were with their family's and were eating turkey and bread with their family's on Christmas eve a year ago not knowing that it was the last Christmas they were ever going to have and the last things that they would experience before leaving this world and become a pile of rotting human flesh in a field they never have been to before with no grave or coffin to pay them respects or be remembered by
107 years rather during the beginning of the first world war, German, British and French soldiers celebrated Christmas together instead of fighting and they were right.
Could it happen again to see soldiers celebrating Christmas together instead of fighting?
Merry Christmas everyone!
Germans, Austrians and Russian were also celebrating Christmas together.
@@mirromarnicco3162 oh really thats cool i thought it was only in the western front because thats what everyone thinks of when they hear christmas truce
@Kevin 63 Well if it happens in eastern Ukraine. It will indeed be a Christmas miracle. 🎄 🙏
The comandment were wrong to let that demoralisation happen because these truces led to the longer war.
The reason this actually happened was because in trench warfare you saw the same repeated soldiers because they were all trapped on the battlefield and if you didn't see hans again, he was dead, this caused a building of trust between the enemies
The scary thing is that even though that they made friends with the enemy, they still had to fight each other after this truce. It feels horrific to see a friend from the other side die because the truce ended.
I think those that took part were sent to other fronts
They are sent to other platoons
They refused to fight
Yeah like these people said I’m pretty sure they were fired and replaced from their positions since they weren’t allowed to do the truce.
yea
I love this animation, but it leaves out one of the most important parts of it.
It wasn't the soldiers that decided to go back and fight again. It was their horrified officers that ordered their troops to quit fraternizing with the enemy.
Let it be known that in the most horrific of wars, it wasn't the common soldier that was thirsty for blood.
It's always the leadership that's responsible.
Always.
I did consider including the generals forcing them to continue fighting, but instead I chose to focus on the soldiers themselves and their hopes for peace. I wanted to end on a sad but hopeful note.
@@MrSpherical In fact in war there are always three povs: The generals pov, the officers pov and the soldiers pov.
I thought all the present units from both sides were replaced
@@ajaxnation9504 well after the 25th some places on the frontlines kept the truce until the 30th and got replaced.
@Linux user no, what you are stating is purely propaganda, the germans did not rape the Belgians, mostly these sayings were made up by countries such as canada and the Uk, who also said that the germans crucified a soldier, it is not accurate and should not be acceptable by any means especially of modern standards, the german soldiers were not brutes, the only reason for that saying was to support the war, and for the outrage of the public which was to spark the movment of enlistment, many soldiers german or not were human and not monsters, these lies underline the justifications used to wage war against the germans, and should not be the image of the german soldier of ww1.
Please do not mention or wave this around any other Christmas truce video, i mean nothing against you but the message you are sending.
The soldiers were told that the war would end by Christmas. When the Christmas truce happened many soldiers attempted to end the war. Commanders didnt allow it and there was never a Christmas truce ever again.
it was actually very close to ending the war, but commanders swapped soldiers from their platoons and hid any evidence of it so all the soldiers thought that only they had a truce, even though it happened across every front in the war except for the Austrian front with serbia
@@maxkeys5981 what?!? Any proof though? I wanna know more about other truces along the front other than the western front
