Not really, during the Christmas truce some people used it as a chance as sabotage and were untrustworthy of each other, including an incident where German caroling was ordered to be drowned out by British gunfire and artillery. But not every sector was like this, even Indians made peace with the Germans on Christmas, although none of the Indians knew or cared about Christmas, the lit bonfires reminded them of Diwali, and some Germans led Indians out of the trenches with Cigars and smokes.

Watching this again at 1:30am on the 25th and its heartwarming to realise one of the worst conflicts in history was still able to come to peace and happiness on Christmas day for the time it lasted for these men
Technically it has, by the five minute version of this ad. But I understand that's subjective opinion. I just know it felt like I was watching it for the first time again, which is not a common thing to experience.
I was in the advert and now nearly seven years on i still think this was one of the highlights of the centenary. We had a hard but rewarding time making this film. Most of the cast were reenactors, WW1 enthusiasts or serving or former British military. Yet i do not understand the hated at times. The events in the advert are an honest recreation of the events at Wulverghem on Christmas day 1914 between the 16th Bavarian reserve regiment and the 1st Norfolk's and C coy of the 6th Cheshire's where there really was an informal kickabout between the British and German soldiers.
Thanks, I'm the tall chap wearing the brown fur jacket at 1:47. 1:53 and 1:58. Many of the core extras have been in various WW1 themed pieces like Downton Abbey, Private Peaceful, Journey's End.
I'm normally accustomed to changing to BBC when the adverts come on, not my favourite televisual past time (no disrespect to actors and actresses), but I'm now 44yrs old, big burly bloke with a shaved head yet I well up every time i see it. Thank you for the best ad on TV. ❤️
You might want to watch the final part of the last series of famous TV comedy "Blackadder goes Forth" nicknamed "Blackadder goes over the Top" It's here on UA-cam. Nearly all of Blackadder is a pleasure to watch, tho I wouldn't recommend starting with the first installment. Check for the episodes featuring Lord Flasheart tho Rik Mayalls acting is not for the faint hearted ( check " the Young ones" and "Bottom" series for more of that brilliant comic) As for that final part - it's in the top ten of most memorable moments on TV in the 20th C for a reason, and it's surely one of the best I've ever seen. Even if it's comedy, one of the more touching scenes you'll be able to watch about WW1
@@reuireuiop0I absolutely agree ... I bawled my eyes out the first time I watched it, and it's still VERY powerful, no matter how many times you see it.
Some people say this should have resulted in peace, that the war should have ended here. But that’s couldn’t happen, because on that day there was no war. Just men who were without their families on Christmas, whom all shared the same spirit of Christmas in their hearts. This is a story of true light in a time of uncertain darkness 🇬🇧🇩🇪🌍 Edit: I also love how this is one of if not the best Xmas advert of all time
Bardo The German showed peace first. Then the British. But some Germans who did not want peace shot some soldiers. They gave gifts the the opposing side like chocolate, tobacco and more. But they were still forced to fight.
I'am German and i've been to the UK twice in the last 6 months, because my girlfriend did a erasmus exchange semester. First i felt little uncomfortable when people asked me where I come from, or heard me speaking german with her, because of all what happened in the past. But then people where so nice and amazing, they were really interested in that, asked of which part in germany i am from, they spoke a few words german with me. All the years I had the impression that people in the UK dont like us, but it turned out to be wrong. It was a wonderful time in a wonderful country. Watching this reminds me that our languages are similar, we have same roots (my name is Jim -- mein name ist Otto), were friends and live not far from each other. This Ad is a wonderful appeal for peace and brotherliness. May you all have a nice year 2017.
Brought tears to my eyes. Actually if you look at history, culture and religion Germany and the UK are way closer then for example the UK is with France, Spain or Italy etc. We are common allies and its very sad we had two world wars to suffer through for both our peoples.
A German said to me, “I am a Saxon. You are an Anglo-Saxon. Why do we fight?" I still do not know the answer to this question. Jim Prince, First World War English Soldier
What a fantastic comment! I love the German language and have german language lessons every Thursday with a lovely german lady. One day I hope to be walking into Germany speaking some what fluently and be able to meet all the wonderful people there. It's abit early but frohe Weihnachten to you and your family 😊 🎅
Can we just appreciate how much work went into this ad? The costumes, the setting, the accessories... they could have made a boring casual “bUy NoW” ad, but they chose this. Wonderful if you ask me
What was really lovely about this was, they reproduced the chocolate as vintage bars and raised over £300,000 for the royal British legion poppy appeal.

The Christmas Truce was a beautiful thing, but sadly the war did wear these men down. The following year, commanding officers strictly forbade any enemy fraternisation and from 1916 there was no suggestion of any truces. By this point loss of life had been too enormous and the use of poison gas made both sides bitter against the other.
To the Hundreds of thousands of lads who never got to come home or see another Christmas from Any side in ww1. Been rewatching this Advert every year since it came out.
It speaks a strong message. During war you have to convince yourself that the enemy isn't human, for what would that make you for killing them. That temporary cease fire reminded everyone in those trenches that the enemy they fought was just as human as the man next to them.
Most of the British and the Germans come from the same bloodline, dating all the way back to Jacob and his 12 sons. There is much historical proof but it's difficult to find. I would suggest to start by reading a book by Raymond E.Capt " Missing links discovered in Assyrian tablets".
I'm watching this in 2024. This is the best Christmas advert I have ever seen. It shows unity and the generosity of the human spirit. Well done Sainsbury's.
Please do not forget, we are not just living together on 24.12. The other 365 days are there too. Merry Christmas I wish all. Greetings from Heinsberg Germany :)
imagine them meeting out of war... maybe in a sports game or something. That is basically the point of the Ad! They wouldn't care reakllt about what job they did it was about the fact young men (and women, though not shown in this ad) who would likely have got along and met each other like they do know in the 21st Century, absent of war!
@@darkspeed62 I know I am a little late, but this advert is to do with bringing people together at Christmas, even if you have arguments, fights, disagreements, Christmas is about bringing together and enjoying each others company. Hope that's cleared things up for you, unless I mistook what you said completely, than I apologise lol
For the 100 year anniversary of the Christmas Truce of 1914 Sainsbury's has created one of the most beautiful shorts I've seen in a long time! This shows how unnecessary war really is and that most people would get along just fine under different circumstances. Ignorance and blind fear are the real enemy. Share this to remind people that it could be different if people chose so.
I don’t care what people have to say, it’s a beautiful ad. It shows that even admits the darkest of times, light can make its way through and bring happiness and joy to deep and depressing times. I hope the British and Germans forever are friends with eachother. I wish my ancestors and country didn’t screw up our relationship with others... I wish the USA could be less problematic and more like this. Friendly and humanly.
Except that it has a sad ending, the generals didn’t let them have peace and some of the people who didn’t fight afterwards were killed and then replaced by new soldiers.
I really liked the performance of the actor as Jim when he approached the German army in the morning. 99% of fear and 1% of hope where he wanted to trust his enemies as humans, even for a moment
Grenade express What’s funny is a lot of the soldiers in WW1 would sometimes just mingle while they’re shooting each other and barter for cigarettes. Both sides knew that their enemy soldiers weren’t bad people, they just had a goal that would be detrimental to their way of life. Sometimes, sacrifices are necessary before things can get better.
@John Doe That is not true... When they went back to the trenches.... They had to kill eachother again... I'm sorry... My great grandfather was there and they had to fight with eachother.
And today we're all brothers, tonight we're all friends A moment of peace in a war that never ends Today we're all brothers, we drink and unite Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white Hear carols from the trenches, we sing O Holy Night Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes A Christmas in the trenches, a Christmas on the front far from home
Sabaton made the newest Christmas song that only makes this day more special and more understanding for all of us no matter what nation we're from... here it shows that Christmas is for everyone.
This ad proves the fact that it's the politicians who have the problems and leaders not the soldiers. The soldiers need to start a rebellion and tell the politicians and the people who make profit from wars to fight themselves. This is so inspirational and makes people really emotional.
This is still one of the most magical and beautiful moments of humanity. In the greatest war of the time, two nations that could barely understand each other, bonded through song, and the joy of the holidays. Could forget their conflict and instead choose brotherly love. Only but for a minute.... but a minute was all that was needed to remind them that they'll all human inside and out
Historians have called the Christmas truce of 1914 "the last moment on the 19th century". The event is an example of the kind of belief in human beings inner goodness and decency that was common in 19th century culture (as the soldiers on both sides dared to assume that the enemy would be decent enough not to take the opportunity to attack once the opposition had their guard down). After the horrors of Word War 1, in fact DUE to the horrors of World War 1, this belief in human decency was forever lost among the majority, and replaced with a sense of cynicism and an idea that there is no limit to humans capacity for evil. This is seen for instance in how about two decades later, during World War 2, a few soldiers during a few separate occasions tried to initiate the same kind of Christmas truce that had occured in 1914, but these attempts were always futile; most of the time the soldier who tried to initiate it was immediately killed by the enemy. By that point, our modern time had begun, and there was no room left in such a cynical world for the kind of old fashioned gentleman who sincerely believes that human beings are fundamentally good.
This makes me cry ....thats how people are supposed to be ... dont you wish that all people could be like this all the time.. simply one of the best adverts ever made
Tbh all these complaining comments and I understand why you think Sainsbury's did this just to "sell a chocolate bar" because we live right now in a cruel world that is FULL of commercialism before humanity HOWEVER I DO believe that JUST THIS ONCE somebody at Sainsbury's advertising had their heart in the right place. Not ONCE until the end of the video did you see Sainsbury's name slapped on ANYTHING and even when you saw the chocolate bar, it didn't have the Sainsbury's logo and wasn't in the shot for very long. The focus was ALL on the Christmas truce. An event that ACTUALLY happened. Of course it didn't show the true realities of war but that's because they physically COULDN'T. This ad was on before the watershed. Kids were gonna see it. Also the money spent on this goes to the royal British legion. A charity that Sainsbury's supports ALL year round. And if you need convincing further, just LOOK AT the majority of the comments. The effect this ad has on people. Most of them say "war is good for nothing", "we need more humanity", "it's sad that both sides had to fight afterwards". NOBODY is saying "omg I want a chocolate bar now". This video didn't make me want to go buy a chocolate bar from Sainsbury's. This ad made me want to go further in life and maybe actually CHANGE something in this shitty world so that maybe our children might never see the horrors of war. If Sainsbury's REALLY just wanted to sell chocolate, there are a million more effective ways they could have done it but they chose to barely mention the chocolate at all and only mentioned it in the context of charity. We live in a world of "buy buy buy" but for once I think Sainsbury's were innocent in this one.
Debbie_Destruction it was about the christmas truce TRUCE do you know what that mean why are ppl so obsessed with showing war and death when talking of truces, thats just retarded
They were all brothers in God's eyes. They fought because diplomacy tied them all in a Gordian Knot of alliances. When a terrorist attack on an innocent Archduke occurred, the chain reaction caused the world to fight and over forty million died to end nothing but a disagreement between cousins and relatives who all died and abdicated decades after. Bless Sainsbury's for reminding us that kindness shines brightest in the darkest of times, even if this ad is over four years old. I hope they release the same ad this year with the same promotion.

Error_404 yes but the propaganda was often untrue or exaggerated. Many Brits signed up due to the propaganda that was distributed about the German atrocities in Belgium, it is widely thought that these were over exaggerated to manipulate the British public to enlist. British people did not really have the full story on why they were fighting
Eilidh Draws : The propaganda was also to encourage men to do the decent thing and fight. Not only did posters brainwash them about the Germans but the posters tricked the British that war was not all that bad and that it would be adventurous. In truth the men did not what they signed up for.
I play this shorter version every year at the men’s homeless shelter where I volunteer lead art therapy. It always puts things in perspective and prompts meaningful discussion among the men. Thank you for this video that is helping hurting people feel hope. Merry Christmas to all.

Make money for their shareholders, I mean. It may be how our system works but I don't have to like it. The fact that it makes you cry shows how indoctrinated you are by this exploitative piece of work. Save your tears.

I couldn’t see you but thank you for being in it

Nearly all of Blackadder is a pleasure to watch, tho I wouldn't recommend starting with the first installment. Check for the episodes featuring Lord Flasheart tho Rik Mayalls acting is not for the faint hearted ( check " the Young ones" and "Bottom" series for more of that brilliant comic)
As for that final part - it's in the top ten of most memorable moments on TV in the 20th C for a reason, and it's surely one of the best I've ever seen. Even if it's comedy, one of the more touching scenes you'll be able to watch about WW1

Some people say this should have resulted in peace, that the war should have ended here. But that’s couldn’t happen, because on that day there was no war. Just men who were without their families on Christmas, whom all shared the same spirit of Christmas in their hearts.
This is a story of true light in a time of uncertain darkness 🇬🇧🇩🇪🌍

A lot of the front was still fighting it wasn’t just peace everywhere. The war was still going on but these were more isolated incidents.

I'am German and i've been to the UK twice in the last 6 months, because my girlfriend did a erasmus exchange semester. But then people where so nice and amazing, they were really interested in that, asked of which part in germany i am from, they spoke a few words german with me. All the years I had the impression that people in the UK dont like us, but it turned out to be wrong. It was a wonderful time in a wonderful country.

@@ai-ss1ug it’s ww1 and no they didn’t it’s a myth
World War I happened in the 20th century
While I don't agree with him I imagine he's referring to 19th century culture and not the actual dates.
mad hanger, yes but what he means is that it is the last moment of the kindness and decency experienced throughout the 19th century.

Fricks Can’t take your comment seriously with that gay ass profile picture
10 years on & still gives chills, smiles & tears ❤
Still the best Christmas advert ever made. Hits home what it means to so many people.
Und für die armen TIERSEELEN ☝️ ☝️ 😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤
沒人想要戰爭,願世界和平,我是台灣人,看了這部片真的心很痛,如果沒有戰爭,他們就真的是朋友了😭
I came here because John lewis just released their 2015 ad and I remembered that no other ad gave me feels like this one! It still gets me...
Snap! Same here!
+raven navera ditto
+raven navera I did exactly what you did! I thought John Lewis's and Sainsburys' 2015 instalments were sweet, but this stuff rips your heart out, then injects it with a copious amount of warm fuzzies and very gently tucks it back in again.
+raven navera SAME
It's called hardtac
I commented on this 10 years ago and I'm back today 10 years later to use this ad in one of my English classes. It's a masterpiece, truly.
Exactly 3 years later and i haven't stopped crying
whats touching is that this is basesd off of real stories
4 years early, but yes, they did make peace soon. Germany got totally fooled and robbed.
Norbert Mikołajczyk they didn't I don't know what your talking about
@@norbertmikoajczyk7485 no they just lost cos they sucked lol the allies were stronger and more powerful
Every time a new xmas ad pops up this year i'm just going to watch this again.
+Daniel Lewis-carter As you say so, Galactus.
I thinks ironic that people use Xmas since means the same thing as Christmas and does not take Jesus out of the picture at all.
+Evan Peacock It's shorter.
+Evan Peacock The X symbolises the cross i believe. So NO Jesus is not taken out of the meaning in this context.
***** You are correct.
2023 - still brings a tear to the eye
It really does.
This is the longest and best ad for sliced onions I've ever seen Sainsbury's make.
This is the best Christmas commercial I've seen in my life.
amen
You mean Advert
Honestly, this is the only Christmas ad I’ve ever seen that’s not just a vomit-inducing cheese fest aimed at simpletons.
Tugg Speedman and the only one that isn’t sickeningly over commercialized
Also happens to be based on fact. They did call a truce to play football.
Its still amazes me that people still love this ad wow 10 years ago this came and I discovered it around 2016 happy anniversary
The sad part is, is that they probably didn't even know why they were fighting. They were just told to do and die...
Rio _Mawer Germany was invading France and Belgium to gain powers rather simple
Eilidh Draws : The propaganda was also to encourage men to do the decent thing and fight. Not only did posters brainwash them about the Germans but the posters tricked the British that war was not all that bad and that it would be adventurous. In truth the men did not what they signed up for.
@@h3llmersplaygames not really volunteered , not like today, they were shamed and worse if they didn't go + fear that's not really a choice.
@James Jiang nice
never been an advertisement that made me cry, holy shit
look up Thai life insurance commercials
it made me cry
This is way better than this years' John Lewis advert.
I agree with you!
Yes but that’s only because it’s about the fallen soldiers, nothing will top it
fr like what does a dragon burning stuff have to do w christmas
Harvey Bolton still John Lewis decent nothing beats this one
@@Kimtaehyung-mj8bo this is top, john lewis are second at making christmas ads, change my mind!
I play this shorter version every year at the men’s homeless shelter where I volunteer lead art therapy. It always puts things in perspective and prompts meaningful discussion among the men. Thank you for this video that is helping hurting people feel hope.
Merry Christmas to all.
