The Short Story of the Apple ///, Apple's first business computer

Kirk Jackson was at the NZ Vintage Computer Meetup (LNI) in April 2023 and brought his mint Apple /// (amongst other 8-bit Apples). Here, Kirk tells the interesting story behind the (shortlived) Apple ///. It's really pretty interesting! He also talks about a few mods that he has on his Apple /// to make it a bit more useable!

I worked for one of the UK's first computer shops from 1979-92. We sold a wide range of machines and we bought an APPLE /// for demo and sale. This machine was a disaster for apple and us. There was virtually no software for it in the UK, it was ridiculously expensive, Steve Jobs insisted that it should be quiet and so it had NO FAN, cause it to overheat and IC's would pop out of their sockets. Other than one word processor and one spreadsheet there was bugger-all software. It would not run Apple ][ software without using an special emulator which meant you lost all the benefits of buying the machine in the first place. We ended up selling the demo machine for about 1/3 or 1/4 of what we paid for it and were glad to see the back of it. It had no redeeming features what so ever. Stephen Walters
