My personal favorite is Phantoms. The creator of Silent Hill games was inspired by this book to create a town without anyone in it as a core for the game. They even named one of the streets in Silent Hill Koontz Street in his honor.
My first book on Dean Koontz was Velocity and I found it really good and was quite surprised that most people didn't like it I plan on reading Intensity sometime in the future too.
1. The Voice of the Night 2. Mr Murder 3. Icebound 4. Watchers 5. Midnight 6. The Bad Place 7. Velocity 8. Hideaway 9. Your Heart Belongs To Me 10. Strange Highways One thing I have never seen Koontz fans talk about is how Koontz will often quote lines of poetry from something called "The Book of Counted Sorrows" in his epigraphs. The Book of Counted Sorrows is OBVIOUSLY a false document, right? Created entirely by Koontz in order to have material for his epigraphs? (There are only so many books that can start with "a faint cold fear thrills through my veins," right?) Koontz can write suspense like no other living author. His chase scenes, in particular, are amazing. I have grown sick of his recurring tropes though. For example, Koontz puts bougainvillea in every single novel he writes. I'm not exaggerating. You can read about why he does this if you google it. Most Koontz novels feature a hyper-intelligent dog (from Midnight to Dark Rivers of the Heart and beyond, this dog shows up), a protagonist with a vague, quasi-military background, an Unstoppable Killer antagonist, kind of like Terminator, except this killer always has a weird sexual hangup of some kind and this killer always makes an uncharacteristic decision at the very end of the novel. Many of Koontz's characters are little more than surrogate mouthpieces for his libertarian-small government lectures. Finally, Koontz seems wholly unable to set his novels anywhere OTHER than Southern California. This is a huge reason why I absolutely LOVE Icebound. It's so great to read a book that takes place on a drifting ice floe that has a bomb on it. The clock is ticking and the scientists have to get off the ice floe before the bomb goes off. Also, one member of the expedition is a violent killer. YES! Great stuff. Check out Icebound if you haven't already. The Voice of the Night is also a welcome change, in that the protagonist is an awkward, shy kid named Colin who just wants to fit in. When the coolest kid in town, Roy, starts a friendship with Colin, we soon learn that there are sinister strings attached. It's a great novel, and my fav of Koontz's. Cool video! I'm glad you like Mr Murder, Midnight, and The Voice of the Night as much as I do
I've read soooo many of his books that they all kind of blend together lol, but Bad place and Odd Thomas, from your list are a few of my favorites also,,
Koontz is an intelligent writer, with a strong command of the craft, but his stories are often dull and without direction. Watchers is very good. He nailed that one.
I was lucky when I first read Koontz. Velocity , which highly suggest, & then Intensity. The Husband & The Good Guy are also great. I will check Shattered & The Bad place. Thanks for sharing.
When I started reading for fun Dean Koontz waa the first writer I could get into. I absolutely loved his books at that time. However I have been disappointed by most of not all his books I have read in the last decade and pretty much pass on him now. If he ever writes the third Midnight Bay book I may have to pick it up but that's it That doesn't stop Watchers from being one of the best books I ever read. I also absolutely loved Intensity and Lightning.
Good choice for number one. I personally loved Lightning, but I'm a time travel fan. I loved the way you see it from the recipient's point of view for the most part.
According to Wikipedia he has written “over 105 novels”. I haven’t read anywhere near all of them but a good many. I say “read” but mostly listened to audiobooks. I like his writing style - I like longer books. Suspense with an odd gentleness.
I had much the same experience with Koontz as you did. First book I read was Watchers and was hooked right away. Then i read about 40 more of his books looking for another one as good as Watchers. Some came close but never quite as good. then I just got burned out on reading him. haven't read a Koontz in about 20 years now.
You got a long way to go, I bet most of his books are hard to find these days also! 105 total books! I'm reading (Mr.Murder) and I watched your video on it, I noticed other people bashing the book but you claimed you liked it, so far I think it is a vary entertaining book and I'm going to have to find more by him!
"Demon Seed"(based on the original 1973 novel, and later, the 1997 version) book that the movie is based on, is scary! I also like "The Funhouse". Read the book first, chilling backstory. Then watch the movie of the same title. Check out the body in the bottle. Creepy!

Great list and video. I recently started my Dean Koontz journey last year and he is quite the hit or miss. His government conspiracy storylines are a bore and chore to get through. My favorite books of his so far are Shattered, By the Light of the Moon, Fear Nothing, The Taking, What the Night Knows, and Your Heart Belongs to Me. His absolute worst has to be Breathless. I hated that book with my entire being.
I didn't 100 percent love The Mask either. And you're so right about the ending!!!! Unfortunately, I have only read The Mask and then his children's books (loved those). I have got to rectify that and read more of his adult work. Because of your praise, I really want to read Twilight Eyes. that may be my next Koontz. I also already own a copy of Intensity and Watchers. So I definitely want to get to those! This was a fun ranking; great list!
Funny, you have such a different ranking than mine. But then again, I've been reading Koontz now for almost 30 years and I find that your experience changes with the amount of books you've read. Intensity is for me also the best. Besides that, you should absolutely read Fear Nothing and Seize The Night. Those are amazing. Same as Icebound, which is completely different from all his other books, but I think it's fantastic. Servants of Twilight was my first Koontz and still one of my faves. And finally I think Winter Moon is for Koontz what The Mist is for King. Still love that one, even though it's not his best. And of course I do love Twilight Eyes, The Bad Place, Lightning and Cold Fire. That said, Odd Thomas is, imo where it all went wrong and down hill. I disliked Odd as a character so much, that I really hated the book and with that the entire series. I loved Lightning, Strangers and False Memory a lot, but a lot of his recent work has not been doing it for me. Maybe The Husband and the Jane Hawke series. But my most recent read is actually my Koontz book 39 and that's Watchers. I never read it before, because I didn't like the mass pocket paperback size I had it in, plus I didn't feel the plot to begin with. I DNFed it last year, finished it last week and still think it's not a good book. It had some funny elements to it, but for me, it's one of the most overrated Koontz books out there. Anyway, I'll still read Koontz and will try to read them all, but I can't devour them anymore like I used to and need some time inbetween these books. Thanks for sharing your top 21 though.
@@flutebasket4294 Phantoms is probably his most paranormal book with monsters and gore. It was good, not my favorite, but that's maybe also because the movie has taken over my memories of the book. I’m can’t stop thinking, “why did he keep reading them and why did he start off saying how much he was into Koontz”?
The Odd Thomas series is kind of uneven in quality but has a lot of weirdness and humor in it that make it an overall engaging read. “Odd Hours” (the fourth book) is probably the best one.

Some thoughts: The Bad Place: ugh, those villains. Creepy-good book. Lightning: Liked this premise, thought Laura's romance was very corny and her becoming rich as an author just conveniently solved a lot of problems for her. Odd Thomas: Bawled at the end of this one. In my defense, I'd lost my brother the month before. "It's gotta stop now, son.". Just. Ow. Intensity: Too prissily written most of the time. Antagonist is creepy, but Chyna is just not an interesting character for most of it. Dragon Tears: Hi. You didn't even mention the main protagonists. The main antagonist isn't trying to destroy a city, he was literally a kid born with enormous power and horrible brain damage who basically never grew up. It's clear you don't really remember the focus of this one. Twilight Eyes: There's a romantic scene in this one where a woman says some extremely stilted things that are I guess supposed to sound seductive? But...ugh. No. This man cannot write a sex scene. False Memory: Neat ideas, love some of the imagery, and agree that the opening of the book is its best feature. It breaks down after awhile and loses steam. Cold Fire: Way to not even mention Holly. How is this book this far up your list if you can't even remember the secondary freaking protagonist enough to mention her?
I’ve read Koontz off and on since around 1990 and I much prefer his later works to the earliest books. My favorites are the entire Odd Thomas series and the two Moonlight Bay books (Fear Nothing and Seize the Night.)
I used to read his books in the 80's and 90's. Really weird supernatural, sci Fi and fantasy stuff. Cool stuff. I quit reading his and Stephen King's books for several years taking an interest in other subject matters. A few years ago I tried reading some of Dean Koontz's newer books. I couldn't get past the first chapter, sometimes not even that far. His stories seem to be infused with extreme right wing paranoia now. I just want to read a really good book that's got a mix of supernatural/sci Fi and fantasy without the political paranoia. Too bad, I miss his old stories, he wrote some good stuff.
Now that I finished this video, I determined I won’t waste any time reading Koontz. I watched this because for 30+ years his books have flooded book stores. So I thought I need to finally start reading such a hugely popular writer. This made me not regret passing on him all of these years
This sounds like the top books of Dean Koontz you don't like. I've read almost all of them multiple time and love them with only a couple of exceptions. They may be formulaic but there always very well written and paced. We just have to agree to disagree.
Fun video! Intensity is number one for me, too. I'd say Demon Seed is number 2. It probably drags because it was written several decades ago, and writing styles have changed. But the premise of Demon Seed is too close to today's science possibilities, and the ending freaked me out.
I really love his short story collection, Strange Highways. I remember enjoying Darkfall, Intensity, Funhouse, Demon Seed, and Hideaway, though the ending of Hideaway was kinda meh
i haven't watched the entire video yet just one of The Mask (1981) that wasn't even under his real name it was one of those he had put out under a different name actually. if you are curious on how many books he's actually written he's done over #140 books at least his 1st book came out in (1968) and yeah The Mask was pretty bad, i hated the ending of The House of Thunder (1982) but Strangers (1986) i fucking loved To Correct you, Strangers was one of his biggest hits that's true but his 1st real bestseller was (1973)'s Demon Seed the Original version of the book since he rewrote it in (1997) and Whispers (1980) also was one of his huge hits as well.
Wow you need to read so many more of his books… must of your list are his least popularbooks I can’t believe you didn’t even read the chris snow books…. Jusst keep reading his books stay away from the 70’s and 80’s…. Lightening in my opinion is top five…
If you haven't picked it up yet, I highly recommend 77 Shadow Street. That's the Dean Koontz that has engaged me the most as I've been working my way through his works. I'm also fascinated by your ranking for The Bad Place as that was one I could not finish. I just didn't jive with that story at all

Too bad, I miss his old stories, he wrote some good stuff.
I love dean koontz books and Stephen King book my favorite the stand .
Now that I finished this video, I determined I won’t waste any time reading Koontz. I watched this because for 30+ years his books have flooded book stores. So I thought I need to finally start reading such a hugely popular writer. This made me not regret passing on him all of these years
Read Phantoms at least, it's a fantastic story.
Wow you decide a writer is good or not based on just a video. Unbelievable rationality
But the premise of Demon Seed is too close to today's science possibilities, and the ending freaked me out.
didn't you miss some? like the taking
DOOR TO DECEMBER DUDE! DOOR TO DECEMBER!
It's strange that his two most popular books (Watchers, Intensity) are the only two I haven't liked so far. And I even like The Taking.
Strangers might be his best novel, and yes, Watchers isn't good
Oh, I do like Strangers.@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315
I really love his short story collection, Strange Highways. I remember enjoying Darkfall, Intensity, Funhouse, Demon Seed, and Hideaway, though the ending of Hideaway was kinda meh
Odd thomas is great but in my opinion some of the sequels are as good if not better. The third one brother odd is very good!
This is an excellent video! It almost makes me want to read Koontz again. Almost 😅
It will be a while, but I see myself rereading my top 5 or so.
i haven't watched the entire video yet just one of The Mask (1981) that wasn't even under his real name it was one of those he had put out under a different name actually. if you are curious on how many books he's actually written he's done over #140 books at least his 1st book came out in (1968) and yeah The Mask was pretty bad, i hated the ending of The House of Thunder (1982) but Strangers (1986) i fucking loved To Correct you, Strangers was one of his biggest hits that's true but his 1st real bestseller was (1973)'s Demon Seed the Original version of the book since he rewrote it in (1997) and Whispers (1980) also was one of his huge hits as well.
Wow you need to read so many more of his books… must of your list are his least popularbooks I can’t believe you didn’t even read the chris snow books…. Jusst keep reading his books stay away from the 70’s and 80’s…. Lightening in my opinion is top five…
What is the scene in whispers your speaking of?
The rape scene
@@Monsterblood Yes!!! Thank you. I wanted to make sure we were thinking the same thing. Appreciate the video. Keep up the great work.
Odd Thomas sequels are great. All of Odd is great
Bro…you read alot of stuff, you didn’t like.
Government conspiracies do exist, but you're still fresh out of school to have figured it out, when you start thinking for yourself you'll understand.
That's right
If you haven't picked it up yet, I highly recommend 77 Shadow Street. That's the Dean Koontz that has engaged me the most as I've been working my way through his works. I'm also fascinated by your ranking for The Bad Place as that was one I could not finish. I just didn't jive with that story at all
So far the bad place is my favorite of his. Lol
I've read
The bad place, mr murder, the face of fear, the husband.
The bad place was a bad ass book bruh
