It will stick with you...I read it in the 80's & still remember it well. I read it shortly after my older brother's death (age 22) & my ongoing mourning played into the reading experience and perhaps made it mess with my head even more than a typical reader. One thing that sticks with me is that in Chapter 40 (I had to go look it up!) for a brief moment after Gage's death, King teases us with the possibility that it never happened. I remember feeling so relieved, but that was only for a page or so,,, I thought that was sort of mean! I thought the 1989 movie did a credible job telling the story, but nothing packs the power of the book.

I believe I read somewhere, that a very similar event happened to SKING…one of his kids took off and a truck was coming,and right before he was ready to cross the road, he caught him by the shirt at the last moment. When he wrote this book ,it was to close to home,he decided he wasn’t going to publish it. He put it in a drawer for five years.

@@Already-Overbooked Well I just read it for the first time as an adult and I had to move from my recliner to the couch because at least there was a wall behind the couch - unlike the recliner - so I knew nothing would be behind me.

In one interview SKING said I wanted to write a book about burial customs and this what came out.
This book haunted me as a kid. I reread as an adult and it hit differently
