I was so worried that the anime was going to cut Senshi's panty shots and I'm so happy it made it in! There will be many more.
The fanservice discussion is interesting because Ryoko Kui (mangaka) is definitely making fun of it with Senshi's sexualisation, but there is a fair bit of side material and art where she frames Senshi as "the Hot One" of the party completely without irony.
The subtle sexual content that Kui does put in is just completely unlike any fanservice tropes that anime fans are familiar with. To quote some on twitter "It has NSFW content it’s just she’s such an *advanced pervert* it doesn’t register as NSFW for the average person".

i think the fanservice is in a liminal space between ironic, parodical and genuine. ryoko kui definitely thinks senshi is hot, but also a lot of the early scenes with marcille feel like they're taking the piss out of fantasy fanservice (i.e. slime and tentacle vines) with a character that is just completely and totally unfuckable. senshi, being incredibly fuckable, doesn't have that problem
that being said, i'm a gay guy, so i'd say i'm used to seeing the humor in my genuine desires. i don't think the conversation is really limited to "is it a parody of fanservice or just normal fanservice for a group whose desirability isn't typically showcased", since it can be a lot of stuff
Yes, I'm completely sure that the idea is to mix irony and genuine taste, in animes they don't usually do male fan service and here it is used as a joke, but there are scenes in the manga where Senshi is illustrated in a hot way on purpose.
The food we eat was only able to evolve because people like Laios existed. Imagine that. How many people would have eaten things that were poisonous or gave them an upset stomach?
isnt there a way to test if food is dangerous to eat by cooking it a lot of times so that whatever danger it could posses vanishes and then cook it one less time with each try until you either get only minor food poisoning and survive while also figuring out the fact that the food is, in fact, poisonous, or find out that the food is safe to eat with normal cooking? (hope you wont get a stroke reading that, cuz i have no idea how to describe what im trying to say differently)

Also, as a manga viewer I am excited to see how they adapt the world building. The mainline story world building is great, but the author adds a lot more context to the world through her art books and side stories. In those extra's she puts in a lot of stuff that is very cool, but would mess up the pacing. Hopefully they animate some of the little shorts if the do a physical release, or maybe explore some of them in an isekai quartet-esk fashion.
Edit: Going back and rereading chapter 7.6, it looks like they did add the extra tidbits about the armor to this episode. Neat!
After you finish the first season, I suggest checking out chapter 7.6, 14.5, 21.5, 28.5, and the Daydream hour 1 in your own time. It adds little tidbits and facts that don't otherwise fit in the story.
The extras and daydream hour are such a blessing. They show how much thought and details Kui has put into her world that give it such a well-rounded and lived in feel. We as an audience have truly been fed so well with this series.

Love the Daydream hours in the manga. My hope is that after season 1, Trigger animated some OVAs or special episodes that are based on them, just so we can see more of the characters.

With the rate they are adapting the chapters, the plot would start getting serious around halfway of the series i.e ep 10 or 11. But the existential horror stuff would most likely be towards the very end of this season, if it is adapted at all.
I am falling in love with how much care the author puts into her story. Being able to watch a fantasy anime without it over sexualizing its cast has been a breath of fresh air.

I've said it before but I'll say it again:
Dungeon Meshi is actually classified as a Seinen, not a Shonen. This means that the intended audience is mature. While Seinen and Shonen can have many overlaps, Shonen becomes a lot more obvious that it's geared towards teenage boys.
So while I can understand that it looks like Dungeon Meshi is mixing up expectations, it's really just the author doing things in their own way, because they know that their audience is a lot more mature and can handle the subject matter with more tact.
Since we've gotten our first shot this episode, I'll tell you now, that's not the last time we'll see "Senshi fan service" and honestly it never feels like it's done in parody. Ryoko Kui is just genuinely known to be quite positive when it comes to repping different body types and diversities, and it all feels completely natural because you can tell she just enjoys doing it.
I'm not sure if the anime will show it later on, but there's plenty of side-sections in the manga that shows off Ryoko Kui's doodles and sketches to humanise her characters more, including side characters that you'll rarely see.
It's a valid conversation to have, fanservice is so ingrained in anime culture that a lot of people don't question it. It's not bad per se but it's always female characters doing it (and a lot of the time they are minors too), so yes, the subversion here is refreshing and welcome. Hopefully as young authors enter the industry it will become a less common and better implemented thing.
I think there was a naughty hand holding joke there, because the armors would get pregnant by holding hands.

Also, I love how the senshi panty shot thing is kind of a joke but showing Senshi as attractive is sincere, the author drew some really flattering pictures of him is some of the chapter covers, some daydream hour bonus art ect. The dwarf is just sexy 👍
Love we now seeing studio triggers specific style of animation that they are known for. They hav their tame ones likes in past episodes and the erratic/flashy animation seen in this episode.
Spoilers:
Bruh, Chilchuck being a middle-aged half-foot is one of the surprises the other characters find out about him later in the story. Viewers/readers are supposed to assume he's young because he objectively looks young/like a child. It's one of the discriminations half-foots have to deal with in this world. It's not a huge deal that this was spoiled for them, but if you're a manga reader, why would you spoil this when you know it's something that is naturally revealed later on? 9_9

It was the same for trigun with that one "furniture" joke referencing a major event in volume 10. I ended up being spoiled wayyyy before reaching that point because barely anyone tagged spoilers

A big fan of reaction channels who do analysis, especially "noticing small things". I wish other shows just didn't do gratious fanserivce, and they should be called out. Though I can recommend talking about something else in detail as well, like character psychology or story theories, which would help with concerns if rants take a good portion of videos.

I think a lot of people dont want to talk about the genuine issue with fanservise in some anime because they feel like it will draw in the crowds that have nonstop back and forth shouting matches.
I don't mind fan service for the most part as long as its not done in a way that takes away too much for the plot or isnt too borderline hentai. I do love to see it when men get the same treatment, its only fair.

i really don't think it's anything as deep as a "subversion of fanservice". if you're into hairy, short, muscular men like Vegeta or something, you're going to show sexualised shots of the dwarf man in your manga, lol. if you as the author are not attracted to blonde slender elf girls, then you're not going to sexualize them when they're attacked by a slime or tentacles. it's still fanservice, it's just of a man. that's not me saying that's good or bad of course, just thoughts on the artistic process in general.
though, generally speaking, I myself prefer sexualization of men in anime, because it's done more subtly; for example, with a girl, her boobs are waved in your face, but with a men, they don't wave his bulge in your face. if the sexualization of the women was as docile and not as obviously fetishy as it tends to be, i'm sure we'd all have a much higher opinion of it.
TLDR, i don't think it's 'ironic fanservice' or a 'genius subversion of the genre to show this man's panties', but is rather the artist's personal tastes, lol.

If ur interested, my thoughts on "fanservice" or sexy content in series is that if creators are going to put it in their works, they better actually be HONEST Abt putting it in because they like it or find it appealing or whatever. Because the halfhearted "teehee...it's not REALLY sexy, that's ur dirty mind" "let's just put it in bc we feel like it's obligatory" schtick or worse the fake-bashful "let's make up a convoluted excuse why this is sneaky thing is *actually* meant to be 100% neutral and normal" etc is tiring, dishonest, and kinda insulting to the audience when telling or trying to read a story.
DM has interesting stuff and you get a better idea of what the creator finds attractive or fun as u go along heh, including the Senshi stuff, but it feels genuine in my opinion and because of that, is integrated into the story much better

Definitely overthinking the "provocative shots" in Frieren. If people like feet (a small minority btw) they would get off to that shot of Frieren kicking her feet on the bed, so what. I just thought it was a cute shot of Frieren straight chillin. Any other shots that might seem "provocative" are far and few between, and it's just light comedy, hardly a deal breaker. It's a little concerning seeing you so paranoid of "fan service" moments, that it kinda just takes you out of the reaction briefly.
Anyways, good reaction! Love Dungeon Meshi so far, and Trigger is my favorite animation studio, so I expected this show to be as good as it is so far!
