Aladino I NEVER find you two boring! That face!!! Aladino LOL
You guys are just great! you make me live on my laptop watching your trips. that may change after I take the cover off my Catalina 22 ! and start my spring yardwork, I really love the way all the videos are done. you are living my dream! such a cute couple, God Bless both of you, Keep Calm and Sail On ! I will be watching you on rainy days for sure !
You guys are really brave fighting those currents and doing it in winter. we took one look at the river Marne in Feb and just said 'No!'
Aw thanks for the comment guys! Yeah it was pretty rough haha! Glad we made it though, it was a good adventure story!
Beautiful scenery as you glide by. 👍 Your description of what you see almost seems like we are in the boat with you. Good job you two.
great adventure, great story, great video. Totally awesome.
Thanks for sharing your adventure. We have locks on our three rivers in Pittsburgh - the Allegheny, Monongahela, and the Ohio.
Another superbly narrated and filmed video. Awesome. Be safe
Brilliant work with your videos, your story is fascinating and as you say the adventure and challenges along the way make it something that will live in you for ever. All the best from Australia.
Excellent excellent , just a great video. It has such a calming effect.
Maya, your filming technique, music choices, and narration make these river travel stories very enjoyable. Thank you for creating and sharing. Wishing you and Dini - the sometimes angry river otter avatar - ; ) all the best!
I like all your films very much.
I watch your videos everyday.
Thank u very much for creating so good content.
💐👏❤🇵🇰
Wouldn’t it be great to have a sweet cookie day every day ! 👍🎩😎🌞
I bought a barge in the NL last summer and got as far as Paris (Cergy). Our home port is Macon. We hope to leave on 29 May like everyone else. We will keep a lookout for you. Best of luck.
Dini, you are lucky you found a Canadian girl; tough enough to handle winter ❄️ in France! Sometimes you encounter French bureaucracy. We had it described to us in Nice by a British expat server when we complained about booking problems with a company. Went back, new person, no problems booking.
You have chosen the" road not taken" and memories to last a lifetime.
Great to see some of Aladino's fun personality come through in this clip. Maya when you were giddy with gratitudel for that cover Aladino made, milder weather and the warm cuppa, I was just as in the moment feeling how happy if be too. So thankyou for making this video.
It makes sense for the larger boat to go into the lock first. If you as a lighter boat entered first, and the heavy boat came in behind you, if she hit you it could do substantial damage. If you followed the heavy boat in a collision would be less damaging. Also you would be nearer the sluices which could cause you a problem or two. BTW These details are NOT boring. I know the Saone a little and can relive the river following you and Magic Carpet. Please keep giving us the details.
Yes it does make sense what you say and they've been thru that process before, but this was not about that!! They had to "tread water" for 45 minutes waiting for the barge to arrive when they could have gone thru on their own without hindrance to the barge. The locksmiths were lazy and did not want to do the process twice even as they are paid to do the work!!
I wrote above, essentially what you say here, that for us NO DETAILS are boring!! :)
@@nixl3518 I dare say it takes a lot of power to pump such a huge lock out, so I assume the lock-keepers have to account for the electricity bill.
@@cuthbertmilligen there is no pump involved here at all. This lock is on a runing river parallel to a weir, the water comes from upstream. In the winter as you can see the flow is huge and there is no lack of water at all. At some moments of the summer it can make sense to group boats and avoid empty lock movements to spare water but here it's absolutely not the case. The only cost of a lock movement is to operate the powered doors and vanes but this is anectotical, in fractions of a euro.
@ Most illuminating, thank you.
@@cuthbertmilligen Not really! No power other than gravity works the locks....which is why locks existed long before we discovered electric power generation. A lock is always filled by opening the valves from the upper level, then the water is released to the lower level. The lock gates are usually electrically powered but that's peanuts! They used to be manually operated! No bills to pay but for their comfort in the blockhouse, lights in the office and the computers they rather spend their time using....
I live in lyon so i really like this episode. I have motored the rhone and the saone with my sailboat. There is actually a dock on the first lock you pass on the saone but he his a little before the lock. Keep on going with this good vidz
Great job, love listening about the river and your adventures. Keep going.
Thanks for the lovely video. ⛵
Dear Motoring Magic Carpet couple. 😁
Although it's a bit weird to watch videos from the fall/winter in the end of May, the SMC movie production does always a fantastic job.
So thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.
Your intro for this season never gets old, love how you incorporate your music in your videos💙
I needed this relaxing moment, thank you.
Thank you for taking us along on your journey. Your Vlogs make me want to travel to all the interesting place you have shown us..
Loved this episode! It must be exhausting battling those currents? Things like engine malfunction would be going through my head ;0) - keep going as long as you can before its taken out of you're hands .😉
Thanks, guys. Another stellar episode.
Love, love, love these episodes
Awesome presentation!!
Nice photage of Lyon
Thank you for the video and the interesting narrative. Looks way too cold for us Queenslanders but some day maybe we will get there.
ALADINO Y MAYA UN SALUDO DESDE ARGENTINA TODO MUY BUENO !!!!!!QUE LA FUERZA TE ACOMPAÑE !!!!!
Magic Carpet, a Coffee ( not Maya strength ) and a smile..... Happy days :-)) xx
Great job dealing with the currents ,not an easy task i know...thanks for sharing and all the best
Great video, beautifully narrated as always. I’m sure the lock keepers would have environmental and financial reasons for prioritising commercial traffic. Lucky you’re flying a Dutch flag ..... could be trickier atmosphere these days with a British one?!
Not tempting fate, but could you say something about the seemingly flawless performance of your engine? Hours of apparently trouble-free motoring .... not luck, a credit to you for your maintenance and diligent upkeep routines.
Stay safe, thanks for a fabulous series of videos .... and much excitement for your long term ambitions too. Roy
I live just beside those old lock in Lyon at least the first one xxx and you stay at “colonge au mont d’or” near Paul bonuses restaurant wel known chef for his cuisine of course
Loved the tour. Thanks
Captivating adventure, and beautifully filmed.... Going north on any river, is technically going uphill, hence the strong current against you - Thats right, isn't it ? lol
Thanks heaps for sharing that’s an amazing part of the world. You guys are so lucky being able to travel to such beautiful places. Greetings from Australia guys, stay safe and looking forward to your next video.
I love watching your interesting journey. Thank you!
Camera work and editing still getting better. Like the close-ups. Story is interesting. Enjoyed it as usual.
Hi guys
We love your videos and music! We are sailors too in Manitoba and enjoy following as we go thru our cold winters and now this pandemic. On this last video, we were interested in finding out who the musical artist was near the end of the vid.
Hope you can help!
Safe travels!
Nice video, fully stabilized 😀. Drone footage would be great for such rich areas.
Hope to see you in Scandinavia this summer! Great episode=)
I've been to Leon, Iowa. It had the nearest swimming pool.
Enjoying your videos a lot! Do you have the option of putting the anchor down while you wait for the lock so you don have to idle in place?
Love your vids - my saturday morning ritual before I go off sailing
i love following your journey through france. Next Belgium and the Netherlands? How come you sail under the dutch flag?
The St-Laurence river locks apply the same rule.
Your vlogs are very beautiful but it would be better if you indicate on the video which date it was shot ... '' Cruising the Saone River in December '' december 2018 or 2019
2019!
Hi, i have a one question. What are u using to navigation? Tablet (e.g. iPad) or plotter with seamap?
Why do fight to get to a particular location so often, is it not permitted to just throw an anchor down, or pop some mud screws into the bank when you decide thats it for the day?
Hi, The locks are filled and lowered by gravity. Close one valve and open the other and the water comes in or goes out. 45 minutes was just a rude power play.
I'm enjoying your trip a lot and would love to know your draft and the depths of this river and especially the canals further on. .I understand this is a major factor in navigating the canals successfuuly especially for a sailboat.
Aldinio, don't ever think you bore us with information. Even if we never get the chance to "motor-sail" the rivers and canals u two are going thru, those of us that follow you LOVE every little detail u release from your minds to us!!
Though this video might seem like a hundred years ago, I was quite upset when you described how the Lock-masters jerked you around the way they did!! They were quite aware and perhaps enjoyed your torment, watching you struggle in place against the current waiting for a barge that could have comfortably gone thru without waiting, after you had gone thru on your own. You should have made a stink since you've paid for the right to use the locks, though I understand ur desire to make little fuss lest the other upriver locks yank ur chain to mess with u!! Frankly that is the character of many a French and this is why they deserve the "bad press" they get even as many others are very nice! We always pay the piper for one rotten apple; the french just have a few too many of them....
I sense a bit of weariness underlying your sentiments even thru ur chirpy commentary. It's understandable as I'm sure u did not anticipate quite the struggle it turned out to be.... and you haven't even made it to the shut down at this point. Glad to learn u decided to take a Christmas break! At least it should have given you a boost!!
Nostalgic feelings for us watching this.
Is that a Nordborg 28 ?
Have a safe trip !
A lock taking less then an hour is very good fortune. The main bridge between me and the sea opens only 4 times per day.
I wonder what date this is... how close to shutdown mode... strange watching and wondering how far you go. When you are moving again (I hope you are already by now) perhaps you can do a livestream to let us know how you are doing. Thanks! Wonderful videos!
It was December.
@@JakeHolman78 Yes, I knew December but in early December no one had heard of this virus, in late, China & Italy were already fighting it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE
Love watching your journey. Thank you!
Why travel north into the bitter cold europe for winter?
Loads of loads ahead that have no dock to hang on. May be a pole or so.
See you in Holland
Definitely not like winter here. Rivers are usually solid ice or at least mostly ice by mid December. That's more like late fall here in Michigan.
Top Italian fashion......Aladino in Marigolds......LOL
Maya, a real Canadian “it’s not bad...” while wearing mittens, foul weather coat, hood etc. There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear.
Hi Maya and Aldinio, where are you at this moment?
Hi Martin! We get this question a lot, but we don’t actually ever share our current location on UA-cam. It just doesn’t seem safe to tell such a large public forum where we are all the time. The story will keep unfolding through the videos though! -Maya
@@SailingMagicCarpet Fully understandable. Any news about the re-opening of the locks and the next steps of the trip ?
In the New York canal system they are so nice to recreational travelers. It's too bad they have to treat you that way.
Wonderful video😍
Top notch!
I was wondering what those rubber gloves were for and then I saw the dirty lock wall 😂
Mostly though because it was really cold and keeping the gloves dry is good:)👍🏽
Oooooh. Didn't realize you had other gloves on underneath :P
Nice video
Hi=) How much permit cost?
We did a section of that river a few years ago at #boatingeurope
This is a trip that my wife and i want to take one day (in my 34ft sail boat - currently in Mexico). Do you have any recommendations as to the best month/season or route to undertake this trip i.e. in terms of current/crowds/weather? Also, we have a 5 ft 6 in keel - is that within the range for most sailboats undertaking this trip?.
Most canals in France are recomanded to have not more than 1,8m draft. Upstreams it´s better in summer, when less water flows down the rivers, but in Europe the weather is not stable, in one year you have sunshine every day in other years there is a lot of rain during the summer.
@@SailingSquib Gosh, that is not a lot of draft!

8:40 NOW Aladino looks like a typical riverman! A lot of them look like they've been out there waaaaay to long...!
Is there any tax for crossing the locks?
Stay safe and healthy Greetings for Spakenburg the hidden jamme of the Netherlands.
GerbenT and Gabriëlle van de Veen The Netherlands Spakenburg.
Thats an interesting idea traveling rivers. Be nice to have a solar powered motor.
With solar power it´s better to go only downstreams
너무 멋있어요^^
I know - A Cathedral, we grab a bludgeon and crack the floor tiles - da DaVinci Code!!!
Sometimes you just have to be patient , hope you are both safe.
I would love to do the The trip by which is a different month nevertheless Say Hi to hairy men of yours
Awesome video as always. Hope you guys are well. Is there a way of making a one off contribution
I would have never left the mediterranean sea in winter....
😀👍
Hey, you should be able to move on again ?? aren't you ?? more locks, more river, more north... and the journey continues
Pas encore-.- les ecluses sont fermees...
It takes no extra energy to raise and lower the water level in a lock. Just to open and close the doors. Gravity takes care of the rest.
Yes of course! This was not about cost or anything but scorn that the French are well known to inflict on anyone they can pick on! The locksmiths feel that pleasure craft are a nuisance and do not deserve to be on the water and just bat them around...at least it seems many of them do that. I've spent enough time in France to know the types!!
@@nixl3518 ha ha! I've met my share of that type too! They are kings in their tiny little kingdoms.
@@nixl3518 let's hope sharing these kind of videos will change the minds of some of VNF people. If it can hit the VNF management as well, to spread the word that this behaviour is inadequate as there was time and water enough to transfer the sailboat alone and the freight barge later without creating any delay to anyone. It even creates less delay to the freight barge as it wouldn't have to wait for the sailboat to moor in the lock behind her.
@ Agreed!! Even if there was a slight delay, the barge operator could have been informed to slow down so that he'd arrive with the lock gate ready to take him in! There is no excuse to endanger the sailboat since it could not dock anywhere and clearly lacks the power to override the effects of the current!! I think there is no clear thinking here and might not change till some tragedy highlights the consequences of this sort of policy!!
This is true, even on big locks like the Panama Canal.
I wonder if a French pleasure boater would be as nice as you and not yell and scream, argue and complain to the eclusiers for keeping them waiting soooo long.
