    Just want to say guys i think these are some of the best filmed 'card game' vids on youtube; I've used them as references for other content creators when i've commented on them as to what they should aim for.
    Both of you are filmed very well with a nice low angle and a good depth of field, the back grounds are interesting without being distracting (especially the ginger guys), and you use plain playmats so they don't distract from the cards, and the play area is filmed at a low anlge which is makes it easier to see what is going while being more aethetically pleasing than a top down camera.
    The ONLY two criticism i would have are that the corps players sleeves are difficult to pick out as they have been 'dark on dark' on the play mat when they are upside down; this video is a bit better as they are red, but in the last video it was very difficult to pick out the cards as they were black on black. A light blue or Non offensive Orange (0r something similar) would be better.
    The other is that the non-ginger player's back ground is not quite as good as the Corp players, but that is a bit nitpicky because that is a shooting locaiton issue, and your set is good as it is more 'human' than just dark curtains.
    Anyway just wanted to say well done, and keep making great videos, and looking forward to seeing you play some of the worlds 2017 decks to show us high level stuff!
    best

      Haha! Right before that he said, "Would anyone be as stupid as I'm being...?" LOL!
      I enjoyed the numerous one-liners in this game, too:
      Steven waxes philosophical on playing games for joy rather than being super-competitive, and then muses, "Am I just getting old or---"
      Zach: "Yes."
      :D
      This was funny, too:
      Zach: "You have to break at least one of the Komainu subroutines..."
      Steven: "I'm going to."
      Zach: "...Or you would just be...
      Steven: "Outta luck...
      Zach: "...toaster strudels."
      Steven laughs.

    To help clarify, at 33:08, Zach technically doesn't have to rez the upgrade yet. Steven can break the Komainu, then choose to Jack Out or Continue. If he chooses to continue the run, he will not be allowed to jack out for the rest of the run. Then, there is a Paid Ability Window where Zach can rez the upgrade if he wants. Then, the Run is Successful and all Successful Run triggers occur (i.e. Gabe's Ability, Hokuasai Grid's net damage). This way, Zach can keep the upgrade a secret until Steven can no longer jack out.
    This is sometimes called the "Point of No Return" window. It is step 4.3 of the Classic Core rulebook's "Timing Structure of a Run", or step 5.3 of the current FAQ.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 років тому +5

    Great vid: one point worth mentioning is at around 36:00, the runner accesses an agenda in HQ but declines to steal it to avoid damage. Normally stealing an accessed agenda is mandatory, but because the damage is a "additional cost", the runner may decline.

    At 34:55 you say that if you break the Komainu the run would be considered successful, but you actually have a chance to jack out when approaching the server. After that, there's a paid ability and rez window as well, which is when Jinteki could have rezzed the Hokusai Grid. At that point it would be too late for Gabe to jack out (and so the run would be considered successful right after that paid ability window). On the other hand, if Hokusai Grid is rezzed as Gabe approaches Komainu, Gabe does have a chance to jack out after Komainu, making the run unsuccessful.

    1. Another fantastic video! I recently decided to break out my 2012 core set which was barely played when I first got it and had been left dormant for years.; this video series has not only been incredibly helpful in re-learning the game but the content is equally as interesting and easy to follow thanks to the editing and way you engage the viewer. Discovering my love for the game has of course been bittersweet as it's no longer being supported by FFG and I don't have many opportunities to play in person but still, I credit this video series for its quality and help.
    2. I like the concept of Tennin Institute and felt Zach was a bit unlucky with his lack of Ice and clumping of Agendas; I was rooting for him to win (no offence Steven)! One thing I did wonder was how Zach was expected to score an agenda requiring 5 advancements (Obokata Protocol) when the maximum he could achieve in a turn was 4. I thought building up a remote server to protect it until the next turn would go against what the deck wants to do and weaken the central servers. Is it mainly in the deck to slow the Runner down due to the scary extra cost and the Corp has to cross fingers the Runner won't be able to access it before scored? Are there any other agendas which could be scored in a single turn and would be viable replacements?
    Thanks!

    Oh man what a classic Criminal opening for that era. "What's the worse that can happen" as his hand explodes and he throws away all tempo. Had me laughing out loud for how often I do the same. At least it wasn't Andromeda throwing away ~15% of her deck. Either way cool Jinteki deck, I haven't played them a ton but this identity was a neat concept. Can't believe Steven pulled out the recovery and win.

    Since runners can't decline stealing Agendas that they access, I thought he would flatline when accessing the Protocol at 36:09 since he only had 2 cards in hand.
    I guess that while you can't decline stealing Agendas you access, you CAN decline paying additional costs to steal them, and that's why he didn't take the Protocol? Could he only decline the additional cost BECAUSE it would flatline him to pay it?

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  6 років тому +9

      You are correct! You can always decline to pay the additional cost. Even if it would not have flatlined, the additional cost can still be declined.

    I was into the FFG netrunner when it came out, but decided to focus on AGOT - and ended up selling my Netrunner collection. But it was/is a great game, and I miss it. Watching these videos is a joy, because it brings back "basic netrunner" - and it's really fascinating. I would like to get back into the game, but the card pool is still intimidating. It's a subject Team Covenant have talked about before, and it's really interesting to me. How to balance the game, so people get the most value (play time before cards are rotated out) vs smaller card pool that makes it easier for new people to join, and might also keep the meta fresh. It's really interesting how/if the LCG format will evolve/change.

    • @clarewalker245
      @clarewalker245 6 років тому

      At my game store, they are doing a spring Netrunner league in which the format is called "Core-Tara:" legal decks for the league use only cards from the Revised Core Set and the new Kitara Cycle data packs. (You have to follow the MWL list, errata'd cards, and so on, naturally, since this does affect some of the cards from the RCS.) This is a really good format for new players, because you literally do not have to buy anything prior to the Revised Core Set. And it's good. People are enjoying it. I built a fun Criminal deck using the new identity "419: Amoral Scammer" and a Weyland "Building a Better World" deck. You could just start fresh and not worry about the past at all! :D

    On 33:17 Steven is approaching Komainu. At that moment Zach rezzes Hokusai Grid. Steven can now has a choice how to deal with Komainu.
    Zach could have waited with rezzing Hokusai Grid, till Steven had taken the net damages off Komainu and discarded his hand.
    When Steven now had approach the server there was still an opportunity to rezz Hokusai Grid, giving Steven 1 more net damage and flatlinging him.
    Please explaine to me if iam mistaken.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  5 років тому +1

      That sounds right, but we're pretty rusty on the rules.

    • @Roxfox
      @Roxfox 4 роки тому +1

      That's correct. While approaching any card in or protecting a server (excluding the first piece of ice) the runner has the choice of whether to continue or jack out. After the runner makes that decision, but before the run continues, there's a window for the corp to rez non-ice cards. The last window for that during a run is *after* the runner decides whether or not to access the server and succeed with the run. So you can wait for the runner to lock in his decision to access your cards before rezzing an upgrade and changing the terms of that access. Trap upgrades are very dangerous!
      Edit: Saw this had been thoroughly covered already, but I suppose there's no such thing as too much clarification.

    • @Feldingor
      @Feldingor 4 роки тому

      Exactly what Rox said. The run is successful at step 5.4 of the timing chart. Before that the Corp has a window to rez non-ICE and every player has a window to activate paid abilities. So the full timing sequence after passing the last ICE is approach server, decide to jack out or access server, play paid abilities and/or rez non-ICE cards, run is successful, access cards.
      Also, shouldn’t Santiago be dead? I thought if you access an agenda you MUST steal it.

    • @hardbathsalts3143
      @hardbathsalts3143 6 років тому

      The Corp can burn 3 clicks (typically an entire turn) to purge all virus counters from the board. Its tricky to figure out when to do this, because its so time consuming, but if the runners cards are so boosted up, he can get in anywhere and access multiple cards, its completely worth it.

  • @zachariaswalvarez5931

    im slightly confused as a newbie to net runner, I thought you flatline and lose when you have no cards in your grip, is this correct? and when an A.I. ice breaker says to break ice sub routine does that mean any ice sub routine?

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  6 років тому +1

      1) You are only flatlined if you would take damage in excess of the cards in your hand. If you have 5 cards and take 5 damage, you are fine! If you take 6 though, you are dead. And if you have 0 cards in hand and take 1 damage, dead.
      2) If it does not specify (barrier, code gate, sentry, tracer, etc) then it is ANY subroutine!

    • @hardbathsalts3143
      @hardbathsalts3143 6 років тому +1

      It's really hard to say. I think someone who has the entire card pool probably plays a lot and is most likely going to be a better player than a newbie. But don't let that dissuade you, just pick up a core box and get a friend to try it out. Your local store might have a community as well. This is probably the greatest game of all time, and once you learn the game you can just buy the packs that contain cards you're interested in. There ARE objectively better cards than others, but the beautiful thing about this game is there are a million ways to go about trying to win. A really intelligent person could probably take decks made from the core and beat a lot of people.

    A timing issue I notice at 34:20, you two rewinded to the Komainu encounter when he rezzed Hokusai. However, after you pass Komainu, after you decide whether to jack out or not before "success", and most importantly before the run counts as successful... there is a rez window.
    Did you rewind the play to have enough creds to trash Hokusai because it would've disrupted the teaching aim too much?

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 років тому

      That was actually just a bad encounter. The way it would go is:
      1) Encounter Komainu
      2) Interact/break subroutines
      3) Pass ICE
      4) THEN jack out or continue
      5) Rez window (Zach would rez Hokusai Grid here)
      6) Successful run
      7) Access cards
      The major point here is that upgrades such as Hokusai Grid can (and should) be rezzed after the Runner has locked in their successful run. It is then guaranteed to be accessed.

  • @Murskafin

  • @SgtScourge
    @SgtScourge 6 років тому

    What's the scoring objective for the Obokata Protocols? There's no way you can score without holding in it a remote for at least one turn. With no ambushes and only two upgrades, there's no bluffing the Obokata in the remote. The least you can do is install, advance, ice, and then next turn if they skip it use two trick of lights/tennin, or one of those and two advance clicks.
    If you play this once against somebody you can rely on them assuming you have tricks, but after a few games with them they'll assume not.
    I'm asking because I've been playing this deck a lot and I love it but I never know what to do with the Obokata. Are they really just in there to keep agenda density low and hurt the runner if they hit them?

    • @SgtScourge
      @SgtScourge 6 років тому

      Or do you Miraju it back into R&D consistently and win off scoring four agendas out of hand?

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  6 років тому

      In a lot of ways - yes, Obokata is just to get in the way and delay the Runner win condition. You CAN also sneak it out in a scoring window once a Runner goes heavy and/or takes a lot of damage. For instance, if they pay out to do a deep dig on R&D, you can then install - advance - advance the Obokata next turn and catch them where they do not have enough money/actions to break your remote server ICE AND take 4 net damage. It is all about creating those scoring windows!
      Also keep in mind that most of the time Runners will not know that you do not have traps in your deck. If they start to assume this is the case, put a few in to keep them honest :)

    • @SgtScourge
      @SgtScourge 6 років тому

      Team Covenant sounds good, but is there any reason to ever install ice on a remote before trying this play with an obo? All other agendas score out of hand besides the first breakthrough, which is good if they steal because then you can score the other two out of hand.

      It's rarely going to be worth it with Tennin, but there might be some situations where it is your only out. Admittedly, very rare that you would try to score the Obo in a remote - but if you see them one early and the Runner is being reckless, it might be worth it.

    Why did Miraju derez around 26:15? The turtle virus guy just breaks subroutines, not derezzes stuff, right? Or did something else derez it?

      1. No but corp need to have more agenda points if deck size is bigger and it depends on number of cards in deck. 2. 5 cards (but some cards change it)

    Hi guys, another excellent video. I am going to be purchasing the Revised core for sure, upon release, but I have a question following this video (please excuse it for being a newbie question). With Tennin Institutes ability to add an advancement token to any installed card, what is the point of doing so on cards that do not usually say they can be advanced? What do you gain from doing so?

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 років тому +1

      You can still use those Advancement Counters with cards like Trick of Light! So even if you do not have anything on the board that can traditionally be advanced, you can still stack counters to be used for later. It is also a great bluffing tool, to make your opponent think that a piece of ICE or installed card is something that it is not!

    • @jimsowter
      @jimsowter 7 років тому

      Thanks for clearing that up. I went to look up Trick of Light on NetrunnerDB, and now that makes total sense (as well as making it a FANTASTIC card to have in your Tennin Institute deck). Do you always have to make a point to show what you access from the archives if it was a face up card? Or is the runner required to know what's in the faceup archives by looking at them regularly and then look at them again after corp Accesses a card in order to figure out what's missing?
    I'm unsure if you guys made a point to show it for teaching purposes or that's how you always do it.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  6 років тому

      Not sure exactly what you mean. Any faceup cards in Archives can always be viewed by both the Corp and Runner. Any facedown cards in Archives can always be viewed by the Corp, but in order for the Runner to view them, he or she must successfully access Archives, at which point they flip up.

    • @SgtScourge
      @SgtScourge 6 років тому

      Team Covenant basically the corp made a point to say "hey, I took celebrity from my archives". If you're corp, do you HAVE to make an explicit declaration of what you're retrieving?

    • @SgtScourge
      @SgtScourge 6 років тому

      Example, I play access archives, pick them up, find a face up card I want, put it in my hand, replace the archives. Then the runner was like, wait, what did you pick?
      Do I have to show them or do they have to look through my archives themselves and try to figure out what it was.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  6 років тому +1

      Oh! Perfect. So with a card like Archived Memories that adds a card from Archives to the Corp's hand, the Corp has two options. If the Corp chooses a faceup card, it should be revealed to the Runner before added to hand - since faceup cards in Archives are open information. If the Corp chooses a facedown card, it is not revealed to the Runner - since facedown cards in Archives are only known to the Corp.

  • @emanuelpruker763

    Do you need to fill your hand after a successful steal (as the corp)? Zach had 5 cards before the Obokata protocol steal (36:10) and he has still 5 cards after a few seconds (36:23)

      @querthalas86 7 років тому

      Kevin Crooks so the strength of the icebreaker is only to be able to interact against the subroutine? This is the reason for the subroutine end the run? Im learning, sorry

    • @grahamcrackergaming630
      @grahamcrackergaming630 7 років тому

      No worries! Glad you asked.
      The main thing that prevents you from continuing runs are "End the Run" subroutines. Komainu only has "Do 1 Net Damage" subs. Steven cannot break Komainu's subs, as you pointed out, so he takes 4 net damage, trashing his hand. Then, because nothing has forced the run to end, Steven can continue the run. Does that make sense?

    • @lemonyfreshforme
      @lemonyfreshforme 7 років тому

      An Icebreaker can interact with a piece of Ice if it matches the type, and has equal or greater strength. If both of those are the case, you can use the abilities on the Icebreaker to "break" subroutines on the Ice, i.e. bypass them. OR, if you cannot match the strength of the Ice (or choose to not break the subroutines for one reason or another), you can just let the subroutine trigger and resolve.
      Once you encounter a piece of Ice, you must either break or trigger each subroutine. Only then can you proceed to the next piece of Ice. An "End the Run" subroutine, if it cannot be broken, instead ends the run without letting the Runner advance to the next piece of Ice. If the Ice subroutines don't end it, but trigger, they do whatever they say the do, like causing damage, and then the Runner advances to the next piece of Ice or directly into the server if there is no more Ice left to encounter.

    If the runner has 0 cards in hand and take 1 net damage, does it lose the game by "flatline"? from the rulebook "If the Runner takes more damage than the number of cards in his grip, or if he has a maximum hand size of less than zero at the end of his turn, then he is flatlined and the Corporation wins the game."

    New to the game, attempting to play with some friends online. I've been watching these videos and seeing the runner take tokens for successful runs before accessing. I have only been finding that you have to access if you wish to count it as successful. This way you don't just ignore traps and still get virus counters. Am I missing something? Love the videos though, thanks a bunch.

    • @jumpimminent6072

      Ah man and you can decline additional costs on agenda steals and not steal. This has been the most helpful set of videos that I've found...just some of this stuff is confusing when I read the rules. I'm just here to ask if I'm right in how I'm reading these rules.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  3 роки тому

      Once you decide to access, you trigger everything that says "when accessed" FIRST, then you actually do the access. This is why cards like Medium are so good! You get the token before you perform the access, which means you get the additional card.

    • @jumpimminent6072
      @jumpimminent6072 3 роки тому

      @@teamcovenant okay, so you still have to access the hand or deck and potentially get hit by a trap, but once you declare that you are going to - you add the tokens on. So with medium you get through the ice, declare you are continuing, take your token and let's say you already had one....now you can access 2 because of the token you just received. May be long-winded but games are hard man.

      No, that is incorrect. The card is indeed Ko-ma-i-nu but it's read as Ko-ma-ee-noo like the word too not like the word new, because Inu is the dog in japanese and it's read Ee-noo or Ee-nu.

      @izzet513 7 років тому

      noo, nu, and new all pronounce the same for me. Plus noo has a very different reading in romanji so I didn't want to use that (the other two are both in the post).

    • @giannisc.5254
      @giannisc.5254 7 років тому

      Yeah, i wrote noo because i wasn't sure exactly how to write the pronunciation. That's why i included the example of the word "too". Also, i didn't know that noo,nu and new are all the same for you, i commented based on the usual pronunciation of new. It would be a same if everyone went around and called the card Komai-new. :P Apologies if it seemed like an attack.

    • @izzet513
      @izzet513 7 років тому

      I don't know too many people who pronounce nu and new differently where I'm from (California). Perhaps there's a bit more of the w sound at the end of "new"?
      Either way, as a Japanese student I cringe at the pronunciations I hear from gamers for things like Netrunner with heavy Japanese influence (or especially the new L5R), so I just try to offer help when I can.

    I enjoyed your comments about the icebreaker "Aurora." I was playing a game with my daughter using the tutorial decks from the Revised Core Set. We are both brand new players. In fact, she's newer than me -- the game we were playing was her first game -- and even she started complaining about Aurora. "It's only 1 strength and it costs 3? Sheesh!" Then, later, "It costs 2 to increase it AND it costs 2 to break 1 subroutine? Sheesh!"
    Why do you think FFG put this icebreaker back in the Revised Core Set instead of letting it fade away?
    More to the point -- and I think this might be worth a #askcovenant. Game designers and publishers have years of experience in design (including plenty of examples of what NOT to do...) and each game or new game expansion undergoes extensive play testing. How is it possible that bad cards still get printed?
    Maybe a card like Aurora, though not very good in a constructed deck, is just fine in a limited format like draft. Do they do draft play in Netrunner?
    In Destiny's draft and sealed formats, what makes those games so enjoyable is that the decks you're forced to build are wacky. For example, I don't think I've seen Cantina Brawl in any of the constructed games I've played, but in a draft game it's hilarious. It could also be pretty funny in a totally casual game where you build a deck for laughs, like a JarJar Binks "Slapstick Comedy" deck.
