Thank you for posting. Enjoyed your review. I am somewhat amazed how quickly KTM keeps updating their model range. I also believe, the KTM and the BMW are targeting a different demographic within the adventure community. So to say BMW-GS is better than KTM-1290 or vice versa is not fair to either brand. They both serve their targeted audience very well. Now I am looking forward to your Multistrada review.
A really thorough review and summed up very well Mr Chops ! 2021 has given us some excellent bikes and euro 5 bike's electronics really do help you now, smoother engine, seamless rider aids etc I do like the KTM's graphics to show you what you're altering, dead easy.
Got a 2016 1290 Superduke GT which I bought new, rode the 2020 SDR last year and can't wait for the 2022 GT with the amazing new engine. Rode a Multistrada V4 recently and it left me completely underwhelmed.
The bike looks so odd it stands out, it doesn’t look boring. I agree about the dust bin trying to be an end can, the Tuono had the same problem, but the dealers did deals and I bought mine new (from Wheels) with an akra can thrown in. What’ are the seat heights available Chopsie, we’re not all strapping 6ft + like yourself. Great video, now tell KTM to give a no cost Akra up grade if requested and watch this semi rise to the occasion !
Just going to pick up my new 2022 Super Adventure S. I have a 1290 Superduke R and a BMW R1200 GSA. This bike Melds the two into an all purpose bike. Nice slice of hooligan power and the comfort of an adventure bike. Selling both to get my new bike.
Bloody hell! There goes my dream retirement bike down the gurgler. Bye bye BMW GSA, hello KTM SAS. Brilliant review as usual brother, but I will name and blame you when my wife berates me for wasting money on a BMW T-shirt!! Ah well, I can always use a good rag in the garage.G'day from Oz brother.
KTM has great bikes, the best thing about my 1190 is that is light and very malleable, especially in urban areas, however, don't expect the same quality of materials of BMW or a Honda, KTM was the only bike I have owned that gets rusty with time even if they are kept in garages, but if you don't mind you that all the rest is very good.
I believe, the most worry anyone has in buying a KTM, was reliability. That's all. But, KTM doesn't have serious problems with its bikes, only annoying points only. And that was on the previous models. The newer ones are brilliant 👍 go KTM!
I’ve had the SA-R 1290 past 4 years … wouldn’t say agricultural at all. In fact, always impressed as to how it can hold a fixed speed by throttle position. And fast … Jesus ! Never had dive problems. Only criticism - it’s never liked neutral. Overall 9.5/10. I’m sure this new one is an improvement, but previous one, ludicrously good (with a bigger TFT by the looks of it.) So if strapped for cash, pick up used previous model - I absolutely guarantee you will not be disappointed … and save £££.
I picked mine up last Friday. Sunday I took it out for a four hour ride on the Spanish twisties and autopisa. At this point I'm delighted with the bike. It seems to do everything well. If I have any complaint it's only that the engine tends to rattle a bit at lower speeds.
I like the cruise control on my 1290 SAS. Use it frequently on dual carriageways. Forget adaptive cruise control. Slowing down all the time - would drive me nuts.
I've got a long face and do like the review you gave because the bicycle looks just like me it's something to do with genetics my dad was a horse and at bedtime for some reason unknown to me my wife calls me horseman which reminds me I must go to asda today and buy some pyjamas. As always choperoo I was glued to the screen soaking up your review what a fantastic bike and all that excellence £16,000.00 good value for the full package especially as you say for a one bike person. Keep them coming your doing a great job say hello to the G-man and Mavis.
Great review~ how was the 1290s heat management? Did it throw a lot of heat to your legs. It seems that most modern bikes with their huge catalytic converters are causing a lot of heat problems & they way around it is to put a full exhaust system that deletes the cat. Arrow seems to be the leader in KTM exhausts along with Akrapovic
Hello Chopsy Nice review as always 💪 I am about to swap my 2018 SAS for the 2021 model and your findings have been very helpful! I also like the motorjacket you are wearing in this video Could you inform be about this garment? Thx and greetings from the 🇳🇱 👋
Always cool too see different opinions. I have the new 1250 GSA and I just tried the new super adventure for a week to finally see what bike is better in my opinion. I did ride sportbikes before cbr1000 s1000r and s1000rr. And I’m 32 so I was surprised about the GSA. Cuz I haven’t changed my riding stile. It’s just more comfortable. The week with the ktm was fun. But I would never change my GSA for the KTM. I had a couple of electronic fails with the bike. So I had to stop turn off the bike and start it up again. The quality is no way near BMW and I think the BMW looks better. The KTM has more adjustable riding modes but I don’t really think it’s needed. The ones the GSA has are good. The KTMs power is a bit better but I do not miss power when I ride the GSA. It has really good torque. And I think the BMW is easier to handle/ride. The KTM can make the ride harder so it feels a bit more sporty and the quick shifter down is better. It is a good bike but I think the BMW is better. And in Norway where I’m from. If you spec up the KTM it’s 3300 euros more then the 1250GSA. But some don’t like the looks of the GSA or the image of being a old mans bike. But for me it’s the perfect bike.
Thanks Chops for the nice review as always I would like to see how the seating position and overall comfort compares to the new Multistrada Take care Marcelo
Had the 1190 Adventure a few years ago. Even this was a blast. That engine had brilliant power and torque and was still fine on fuel consumption. It was real sporty to drive... And even this had heated seats and stuff. Only miss points were the e suspension.. It was too low in damping with full load / real sport drive. And the windscreen noises were so annoying... Had a lot of experiments to do... Ad the end a small mra spoiler lip was the solution :). Drove over 3000km through Europe with my wife with the 1190. Good times. Cruise control would be a nice add on on nearly every bike.. BTW chops : when will you test the royal Enfield 650 twins :)?
Fantastic review as always, chopsy! I'm in the US so it might be different but isn't a GS gonna run you at least 3 to 5k USD more? I'll take the SAS every time...
Test rode one last weekend at Holeshot in Salisbury already have the last model but this one much better going to be upgrading later this year without a doubt great review chops as usual
Great review. Like you I'm not ready for an adventure bike but you can't help but appreciate the tech. Stand out moment, pun intended, "It's got a semi on.....& so have I!" Worthy of a genuine lol!
@@LambChopRides Your comment about the weight made me look it up lol. SAS 220KGS Dry/ R1250GS 249KGS Wet so would work out pretty much the same? Can't compare the GSA to this really. I am surprised BMW haven't added radar cruise to the GS/GSA yet
Just wondering...if all the settings are already there in the softwear ,is there a way to unlock them yourself with a little computer skill instead of paying for what already is yours in the first place . Great review ....as always.👍
Hooray Chops!!!!! something thats better than a GS now thats not gonna go down well! Even Bruce liked it alot Just change the tyres and it would be loads better?? Great video👍👍
Yes tyre change would give you more confidence in the corners, it's been cold of course and couple of times it's slipped or stepped out on me. Little warning signs to slow down haha 😄
hi Chops! another great video! it seems like you enjoyed this more than the tuono and sdr. I demoed new gt, and new tuono factory. both of them did't meet my expectations. tuono is not an option anymore until they put new block in it. gt is another story, it was like lacking power comparing to older sas I demoed 2 years ago. now eagerly waiting the new sas for demo. I just want the fan factor. I hope to not disappoint with the handling
hi chops nice review as always just watched both of the sas reviews this and earlier bike i rode the newer one last week as nobody seems to have a gt to try and loved it apart from the windblast on my lid did you get any blast as your the same sort of build as me .may be the next bike if i can sort a remedy thanks terry
I haven't watched the vid yet. Anyway I already have ordered the bike (owned the previous model). I can tell you, I have been waiting for your review. Now, I'm ready to enjoy the watch.
great review again chops , i’m riding the multistrada v4s at the moment, while akros go on my streetfighter, it’s a good bike , be interested in your view of the bike multistrada 😉
Would like to buy this beast now , but there's two reasons holding me back. The price is still to high for my wallet and the second is that I'm a bit concerned when reading people having issues with relatively new KTM bikes. I don't expect KTM beeing reliable like japanese brands but when you pay 20000 € for a new bike, you don't want headache in short amount of time.
Nice review chopsy, that is one clever bike. Love the electronics package. Looks good even though that exhaust is a bit bulky. I am still in two minds about ktm. Are they more reliable nowadays?
The gearbox failed on my 2018 1290 SAS after 400 miles so the engine was replaced under warranty. The keyless ignition can be tempremental (sometimes the bike doesn't detect the fob so I can't start the engine & occasionally the fuel filler cap will not release). In Europe, KTM offer a 4 year warranty but we only get 2 years in the UK. In the light of all this, I cannot recommend KTM reliability-wise.
Great review! Re the KTM needing sportier tyres, Dunlop make the SportSmart TT in a 19 inch front. With a set of those on I imagine this would be a proper tool on twisty roads or even the track.
Its got a horse face and some ball bags hanging off it. You had me crying laughing with that bit mate. The whole review was great but you dropped some gems in there. Top man.
Great vid as always Mr chops That bike is top notch as you showed, all that tech will keep you entertained for hours. Not my cup of tea yet but maybe in a few years lol 😆 All the best to you buddy 👍
Sounds like a brilliant bike, but if I were going for a new adventure bike, I'd probably choose a GS; The GS is still quick enough, looks better, probably more reliable and you cant beat the bmw dealer network.
@@brucecutts8841 really is a preference I suppose. I also like the 2021 1290 SAR, but the old one just didn’t appeal to me. Plus resale of bmw is much higher, so that’s a benefit as well. The only downside that i don’t like about the Gs is the old tractor gearbox. It should be improved for better shift feel, as it’s very agricultural.
Cracking review Chops. Tempted to have a test....it’d have to be good to swap me 1250 in for though. Shame there’s no shaft drive on it, that’s a big thing for GS’ers.
Great video. If you change to 17" wheel would you then need to change the speedo meter reading and lower the rear suspension to level it? But can you actually change the wheel to 17" though ?
Psssst!: Maybe the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak. They tightened up dimensions and 17" front wheel plus a bit lighter. I'm on a KTM GT now but I'm looking hard at that Multi. But will mI miss low-rpm grunt?
Looking at adventure bikes that good for commuting but also can do the long miles and has extra for weekend fun been looking at Tiger 900 rally pro how does this KTM compare and your recommendation?
See im in a position to buy outright, im 27, Want to go touring next month. Do i buy a 1290 SAS 21 8k miles for 11k. Or buy a used 1200GSA TE 16/17 for around 9k and use the addional 2k as a deposit on a 1290R for a weekend toy? Love to hear your view on my dilemma.
Nice bike, looks wise? Front end.........Praying Mantis?! Ball bags? Exhaust can?Looks OK to me. Personally, I prefer the looks to the SD. Bit pricey and high tech for me, but awesome bike. Great review, as always. Ride safe and have fun. Grumps.
Hi Lamb Chop, I'l the guy on his fifth 1290 from S/W France.....I'm the first to admit that I thought cruise control on a bike was a waste but now I wouldn't want to be without it, not really for cruising but more for resting a little on a long ride.....but with all these electronic possibilities you have to ask yourself...How much is too much?
Im now in the position to fund my 2 bike garage. After selling my 1250GSA, at 28 i didn't gel with it. So im either going down the route of.. 1. Tracer 9 GT+ 1290 Super Duke R 2. 1290 Super Adventure S. ?... Be interested to hear your thoughts. Cheers.
Hi Chops, please tell me what was the name of the throttle spacers for your Husky 701........im looking to do the same........love and watch all your vid's
Nice bike, I've always fancied one for winter etc to keep riding while my mint condition 1290 Super Duke R SE is tucked up with teddy in the garage. GV, 👍👍🇬🇧
@@LambChopRides ...maybe later in the year when all the fuss has died down a bit - undoubtedly a lovely ride but I can't get past the looks of most KTMs I'm afraid....
@@TheMissendenFlyer as an ex GSA owner myself I think you have to admit they are not the most conventionally attractive bikes! a friend of mine looked at my old 67 plate GSA and said 'hmm, its a bit 'brackety' isn't it'. The new KTM is striking for sure but any adventure bike is going to struggle looking other than what it is, its in their nature to be imposing and distinctive, I quite like the 'scream' face the new one has.
...and when you do test ride one make sure you have the anti dive active - as an ex GS owner (5 of them) I suspect you will feel as if you have a telelever front end.
Great review as always Chops. I look forward to asking you in the future (once you’ve ridden them), Super Adventure vs Multistrada vs Super Duke GT. Stay safe and keep the shiny side up.!
I know you go to Barnstormers BMW, I found out yesterday my friend Eddie passed away, I bought my first bike with him in 2010, and my current bike in 2015, I was gutted to here he is no longer with us. He was at Farrington for years and lately at Maidenhead. just gutted.
You'd have to laser-cut a custom ABS disc with a different number of slots for the smaller 17" wheel, but it could be done. The 17" would be spinning faster, so the ABS disc should have less slots - in same ratio as the difference in circumference between the old and new wheel/tire I'd say?
Funny that people talking about the look, like its not good, I absolutely adore the look of any new bigger KTM
A very personal subjective thing.

I love the look of it too - massive improvement on the old one and lets be honest the GS isn't exactly a conventional beauty!
I like the bike for it's price but think it's ugly, color scheme and plastics. The GS looks like a raptor bird in flight but I don't like the price and BMW maintenance and repair is expensive.

great review again chops , i’m riding the multistrada v4s at the moment, while akros go on my streetfighter, it’s a good bike , be interested in your view of the bike multistrada 😉
Very nice Paul, yeah I love the looks of the Muliti much more than the KTM. Hope it rides as well 🙏
@@LambChopRides one think came to me on the ktm , though no one wants to drop it but low fuel tank gulp 🤭
Hoping KTM builds all the new Superduke upgrades with these electronics into the next Superduke GT and THAT will be my next bike.
G'day Mr Chops. Great video, great bike. To much information, i'm lost.
Haha, I said it was a quick overview 😆
Would like to buy this beast now , but there's two reasons holding me back. The price is still to high for my wallet and the second is that I'm a bit concerned when reading people having issues with relatively new KTM bikes. I don't expect KTM beeing reliable like japanese brands but when you pay 20000 € for a new bike, you don't want headache in short amount of time.
Cracking bit of kit, but like you, I’m not ready to give up on the more sports orientated side of things. Once I’m 60, then maybe👴🏼👍🏽...
Nice review chopsy, that is one clever bike. Love the electronics package. Looks good even though that exhaust is a bit bulky. I am still in two minds about ktm. Are they more reliable nowadays?
I've had 3 KTM now and never had any issues! Greg has a 890 R for 1 year, not 1 issue.. my experience is positive
@@LambChopRides nice, I’ve been looking at a CBR650R but I always look at the KTM 790 or 890 and think shall I ha ha
Thanks Nick, yes if I bought one I would probably swap the tyres soon as.. Dunlop would be a good option 👍
Its got a horse face and some ball bags hanging off it. You had me crying laughing with that bit mate. The whole review was great but you dropped some gems in there. Top man.
Great vid as always Mr chops
That bike is top notch as you showed, all that tech will keep you entertained for hours.
Not my cup of tea yet but maybe in a few years lol 😆
All the best to you buddy 👍
Thanks Michael 👍
Another great review, Chops!!! Im simply torn between this and the 1250 gsa.....my only hesitation is shaft vs chain. Thoughts???
Sounds like a brilliant bike, but if I were going for a new adventure bike, I'd probably choose a GS; The GS is still quick enough, looks better, probably more reliable and you cant beat the bmw dealer network.
Your points are very good but many will want to be different and buy a 1290 because its not a GS
That’s why I bought my gs - it’s proven and it looks just beautiful!
@@arvisgri7491 in the eye of the beholder I suppose
@@brucecutts8841 really is a preference I suppose. I also like the 2021 1290 SAR, but the old one just didn’t appeal to me. Plus resale of bmw is much higher, so that’s a benefit as well.
The only downside that i don’t like about the Gs is the old tractor gearbox. It should be improved for better shift feel, as it’s very agricultural.
Looks fantastic! Have you reviewed that sweet AGV adventure style helmet? I normally wear Shoei for a more narrow oval head.
Have you ridden a r1250gs with akrapovic headers? That setup is a beast, it has power all around the rpms!
Cracking review Chops. Tempted to have a test....it’d have to be good to swap me 1250 in for though. Shame there’s no shaft drive on it, that’s a big thing for GS’ers.
Yea shaft drive is brilliant if its an all weather mile muncher I agree 👍
Great vid mr chops love all the tec :)
Great bike, too big for me but the real issue that can’t be tested on Journo reviews is long term reliability, only time will...
Superb bike and review thankyou Mr Chops 👍
Thanks Paul 👍
Great video. If you change to 17" wheel would you then need to change the speedo meter reading and lower the rear suspension to level it? But can you actually change the wheel to 17" though ?
A couple of guys on the KTM forum have done just that and seem pleased with results. I think those were 2020 or older, though
Psssst!: Maybe the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak. They tightened up dimensions and 17" front wheel plus a bit lighter. I'm on a KTM GT now but I'm looking hard at that Multi. But will mI miss low-rpm grunt?
you make me fall in love with every bike chops! The future is finally here with proper working electronics!
Looking at adventure bikes that good for commuting but also can do the long miles and has extra for weekend fun been looking at Tiger 900 rally pro how does this KTM compare and your recommendation?
See im in a position to buy outright, im 27,
Want to go touring next month.
Do i buy a 1290 SAS 21 8k miles for 11k.
Or buy a used 1200GSA TE 16/17 for around 9k and use the addional 2k as a deposit on a 1290R for a weekend toy?
Love to hear your view on my dilemma.
Have you ridden the 2022 super adv R yet? Thinking about upgrading from my husky 701 SM
Nice one chop's good test 😎👍
Did Kawasaki gpz900 not have anti dive on back in the glorious 80s
It does, dads still got one, doesn't really work as intended though 👌
Just got myself a 2017 Super Adventure - it's absolutely bonkers.
Just got myself a 23 Super Adventure, it's still absolutely bonkers.
1.
Tracer 9 GT+
1290 Super Duke R
2.
1290 Super Adventure S.
?...
Be interested to hear your thoughts.
Cheers.
Appreciate your views,thks a mill.Cheers.
Only a mother could love it
SDR gets raves reviews
SAS gets raves reviews
GT ... it better be as good as I'm ready to upgrade my current GT. All the signs are good!
Yes very excited for the GT! Should be cracking I think 👍
Hi Chops, please tell me what was the name of the throttle spacers for your Husky 701........im looking to do the same........love and watch all your vid's
Duacti spacers .com I think is the website..
How's the wind protection? Important for us tall fellas
Yes pretty good, as good as the other big adventure bikes 👍
Nice bike, I've always fancied one for winter etc to keep riding while my mint condition 1290 Super Duke R SE is tucked up with teddy in the garage. GV, 👍👍🇬🇧
Yes perfect bike for that, Winter hack 😆
"Feels like a GS" - says it all Chopsy, says it all!! (I'll ignore your closing remarks obvs re "GS beater"......)
Haha, you planning on borrowing one Andy? It's worth a look for sure 👍
@@LambChopRides ...maybe later in the year when all the fuss has died down a bit - undoubtedly a lovely ride but I can't get past the looks of most KTMs I'm afraid....
@@TheMissendenFlyer On the money there, reminds me of a tea pot side on, so guessing a large Scotsman may have an affinity with it :)
Thanks Sam 👍
I know you go to Barnstormers BMW, I found out yesterday my friend Eddie passed away, I bought my first bike with him in 2010, and my current bike in 2015, I was gutted to here he is no longer with us. He was at Farrington for years and lately at Maidenhead. just gutted.
You'd have to laser-cut a custom ABS disc with a different number of slots for the smaller 17" wheel, but it could be done. The 17" would be spinning faster, so the ABS disc should have less slots - in same ratio as the difference in circumference between the old and new wheel/tire I'd say?
Worth the agro I think 👍
