Majored in Linguistics from UCLA in 2016. Met the author of that book, David Peterson, during that time but had NO IDEA what he was talking about because his level of linguistics knowledge was just way out of the scope of my own lol
I’m really interested in different languages and cultures of the world and the first language i started learning was also Spanish. I’m in grade 9 right now, hoping to follow a linguistics career path in the future.
Your video has aided me to make a 20 yr pending decision. " Do study the art of language and its science." The name of the science is Linguistics. Cheers once again
Thank you for sharing your experience. I hold a BA in English Teacher Education and an MA in English Linguistics, and I’m currently a lecturer of English. I always aspire to improve my English proficiency, further my studies, dig deeper into the world of linguistics.
I've always loved language and how fascinating it is so for long I've had my mind set on linguistics. Though as I'm actually starting just the basics in college I've been having my doubts if it would be worth it in the means of my career especially because of automation. Though for some reason I never even thought about the fact even linguists still have a spot in those careers. Thanks for the video!
Cool... Actually i´m learning my fifth language. This video inspired me to keep studyng about linguistcs. So pleasant understand how a language works. Greetings from Brazil!
We have this in common! I started learning Spanish in 8th grade, but I student by myself, using "Spanish for dummies", before I had taken a class for it. I ended up taking Spanish in tenth grade and I had taken 2 years. I didn't stick with it. I picked it up again about three years ago but stopped. I'm now learning Chinese and Korean. I had a talk with a few people and through them I had realized that I have always had a passion for learning languages. The revelation had brought me to tears, actually. So, here I am taking Social Science and Humanities:TESOL- teaching English as a second language and then I'm going to transfer to another College to major in Linguistics. I was afraid to take linguistics head on, because I've been out of school for so long, that I felt intimidated. It took me 4 weeks just to get back in the groove of studying.
Your linguistics journey is fascinating! I'm graduated from food industry major, after a year working in f&b I've realized that i love languages and making friends in this international working environment not because i actually interest in making food. Long story short, your journey give me a huge inspiration! From VN to your place massive thank for you ❤️
I'm looking for a Master in English. My BA is in English with Methodology. Linguistics has always been something I've been interested. In fact, I found a program that had both AL/TESOL. There are some others that have TESOL/SLA AL/SLA. Thanks for sharing your experience. Last year I taught at a private school and despite Bing a nightmare, I still want to pursue that Linguistics path. I'd probably get into a Higher Education I don't know yet.
Yeah I’ve been meaning to study a textbook for students of English as a foreign language. I actually taught English in japan briefly and was kind of winging it using my personal experience studying foreign languages but it’s not the same. You really need a good memorized response for stuff like anybody vs somebody. What came up often for Japanese speakers is articles. When to use the, a, or omit it. They don’t know and I think a is easier to say and just makes mire sense to them. They use it more than the other two options.
Why have I seen this just now??? lol thank you for explaining! I'm an incoming 3rd year student of European Languages (French and German) in the University of the Philippines. =)) I have many friends though from the Linguistics department and as always, not many people really understand what's it about! (can't blame them though haha) anyway, this academic year, we'll dive into the linguistics proper of a language so am gonna marathon your videos LOL =)) am sooo happy to see a Linguist UA-camr!!!
An interesting history of your journey into the world of language learning! I am always interested in any methodology that makes learning a foreign language easier, or more effective for the amount of time you use to acquire foreign languages.
So helpful! I wish you have given more specific examples of maybe things you've learned in school about linguistics or that someone who helps a child with speech issues might be an LSP. It would have given more value to the video as I'm sure you had them in your back pocket. Perhaps they're in other videos of yours? Still a great video! Thank you so much and best wishes for your journey! 🙂🙂🙂
Hi, I would like to know if linguistic major helped with your English? I am struggle now because English is my barrier and I don’t know what major choose because I am getting intimidated by the English language. Do you think that linguistic will help me?
wow I'm a ling major with practically the same story- learning spanish in high school and being really into it, trying to learn other languages on my own, trying to explain English to native Spanish speaker friends, learning Esperanto, etc lmao
I have been learning japanese for the past 1 year and though this, I have developed a really strong interest in how language works and we say the things we do. I am 24 now and was really thinking about doing this but part of me feels like I don't have the IQ to take up a course like this and that It might be a little too ambitious for me.
Hi! That was totally informative. I've been lost in Google search results on where to pursue a Masters in Linguistics. What's the eligibility criteria for applying to a Master's program? Would you be able to make some suggestions?
Odd question: in order to persue linguistics, would you say you need to be super proficient in English? I am a native English speaker but I've always had a problem with such a limited vocabulary (it's one of my biggest insecurities). Linguistics interests me but I'm scared you need to be super smart to even understand it..
Unfortunately yes you do need to be quite proficient in English if you want to do well. I recommend just reading, read read read even if you find it difficult just keep going and listen to speeches online or podcast BUT READ!!
@@NJ-vw7tf I am really interested in language but I am also in the same boat as the OP. I am a native English but my English is extremely average, if not slightly below. What kind of things can I do to elevate my level of English
@@GXrevolution96 the best way to acquire new vocabulary is by reading books and watching television (you should read and watch something which is not general like the scientific section of a newspaper or a documentary which is about the anatomy of idk...dolphins (?). I got a few months ago my B2 First certificate (it is a European thing that is valid in the entirety of the European Union). Rn i wanna get to the C1 level (to do so i read for 30 minutes the NYT)
hi, do you have any book recommendations or anything to teach yourself linguistics? Something bit more than just the basics. I am going to start a master's degree in applied linguistics this year, i love linguistics but i am afraid i might be missing some knowledge. I studied to be an english teacher and i had some linguistics courses, but i still want to study a bit more before starting my classes so i'm certain i'm not so behind compared to people who studied linguistics as undergraduates
@@FingtamLanguages I'm technically at UWMatWaukesha now. I might transfer to Madison if I can keep my GPA high enough but the UWM main campus is also likely. This video was super helpful though, Thanks so much.
Ha I'm a conlanger and I think I know a lot, at least all the basics. I want to study linguistics, but I'm not sure what area. I hope I'll find out while studying 🤞
Any recommendation on where I could get a degree online? I'm a professional dancer and always travelling. Studying linguistics on my own through free source but was wondering if I could actually make it more professional.
Could I major in Lingusitics and minor in Spanish, traveling abroad for a few semesters? I’m asking because I haven’t looked too much into it nor do I know for sure if I want to
My friend will give me "the look" when i told them this sentence sounds right...that sentence sounds wrong...lol. i was thinking about taking a short course on linguistics for a while too...should it available somewhere
Hey mate, my name is Tom, I’m 23 and I’m starting university majoring in languages and linguistics in Australia. I have put 4 years into Greek so I can be proficient but somehow I’m a little nervous since my knowledge for linguistics is a little small.
