What I love is the way Chris Dawson balances out the textures. I am hearing a band of horns and percussion rather than just piano. Even if the piano is actually a percussion instrument because hammers hit the strings, let's not forget that it can imitate any instrument of the orchestra, as long as you engage the brain before you start playing. You have to not only imagine the desired sound, you have to hear it from beyond the earth. :)
GREAT rhythm/tempo!! Excellent stride. Nice ad lib lines too. Chris Dawson why haven't we heard of you?? I REALLY enjoyed this. You inspired ME to go practice some more stride!
Great playing. Very clean too. Excellent 10 ths, especially at this tempo. Thank God some of us younger guys are keeping this incredible piano music alive! Thank you, Chris Dawson! Love to all stride lovers! Your buddy, Flint Long
Why do you all ask for the sheets. It says right in the description that this is improvised, go look the word up if you don't know what that means. This guy is just amazing, practice practice practice and maybe you can improvise like this some day.
Fantastic!! Very musical. It grooves super! every note is lika a smole pearl. Get's even better with closed eyes. Chris Dawson is really a dicovery for me. will go now to his website BRavo!!!
I just discovered your version of "Puttin On The Ritz". I've added the link to a folder I call "piano music I could listen to all day". Excellent job. Thank you.
Loverly to hear. Raises the spirits . If I could find my wooden leg I would get up and dance. The LH provides the impulse the RH provides the swing. Excellent.
This is one of those pieces where I keep coming back to watch. Great work! :D I love the flawless stride LH, the crisp lines, and the overall sound/feel. (By the way, is there a good place to learn stride piano? I play jazz, but I've always wanted to learn stride as well)
now, that is play'n. great feel good style. i have a good "nola" arrangement written in this stride style. great video. i would like to hear and see more. any recordings for purchase?
There can't be sheet music if it's being improvised, this sort of music is just so much better when being played like this, you get the freedom of doing what you want to do, not being told what to do by a piece of paper!
firstly i must state that i really like your style! i am learning (or trying to learn) stride piano for some time, and of course its mean stuff. when trying to analyze ur style i would say ur left hand mainly provides that classic stride bass- single notes, walked tenths, and so on, while your right has more of a swing style approach, lets say teddy wilson, or a lighter earl hines (very octaved based, right)? i like that a lot, i wanna go kind of in that direction...
@silvermediastudio I guess it's worth mentioning.. Bertie was trying to learn the song because it was all the rage at his club, but was having issues claiming Berlin had too many words and not enough notes. Jeeves, as only Jeeves could, points out the nuance of a syncopated 5/4 time signature in American early jazz, and Bertie begrudgingly gives it a pass. In real life, they were both quite accomplished on the piano.

Best version of "Puttin On The Ritz" I've heard. Thanks for sharing.
Still the best version 11 years later
Wonderful playing. If only old luxury hotels still had good/any pianists, which is where this music and style really belongs.
Watching his hands as they move is a real treat. Such skill!

Formidable.

Listen to everyone on UA-cam doing this and it's the best version in my opinion.

Excellent.
Very nice. I first heard this played like this on the lobby piano in the old Carrera Hotel in Santiago, Chile decades ago.
Not nearly as many views as it should have. Great song, played by a great person. Amazing!
Apart from your playing, I like the sound of the recording as well. Smooth.

Yup. I still rock this out. Amazing!!
Great work. This is one of my goals for next year this time. Not particularly this song, but just stride in general. Thanks!
Wonderful touch and articulation, especially in the R.H.
Great you are sharing this sheet music with us, thanks a lot.
:0 im speechless... words can not describe how amazing you are.
Excellent stridin'!
oh man! after the best classical and barbershop, I would rather listen to this than any music in the world. it's awesome! :-)
perfect played. The best .
This rendition reminds me of Marlowe Morris's playing: linear right hand + stride left hand. Solid! Kudos.
brilliant! just love the style, what a pity we have to come to YT in order to hear such music!

You play beautifully. I wish I could play like you, but well, at least I can listen to your music.
This is so good! It's difficult to get a piano to sound this way..
Please, more stride from Chris Dawson!
Piano playing blows my mind.
Wish you would do this as an audio recording because this is fantastic!
it's on his album 'put a swing in your step'
That's amazing!

i dont even play the piano, im a professional listener, but I watch the left hand, thats what stride is all about!!!
That was really Smoooth...
Reminds me of the clean attack of Franke Carle. Marvelous work.

A flawless left hand. Classic treatment of this great oldie. Do you by any chance have the sheet music to this arrangement?

Man, I'm 6'4" and I can barely span those left hand 10ths, the way he jumps around with them is so crazy.
Reminds me of Jess Stacey style. Great job!
waaah your stride is damn accurate.. amazing
Check out the two vids of him playing on my profile. "There will be some changes made" He strides pretty fast around 2:30 if I remember right.
VERRRRRYYYYYYY NICEEEEEEEEEE
Is there a way around the 10ths? I can play 9ths but def. not 10ths :S So sad, this piece is pure genius!
Classy Tomboy A 10 is a 3 - Or the 10th note of C=E. the third not of C=E. Just play the 3. - same 'meaning'.
aah thaank you!
+Classy Tomboy do you have the sheet music for this?
+saumil suchak Posted a (free!) transcription on my website - see my channel for details.
+Classy Tomboy you could roll them
is he jumping around with his left hand spanning a 10th?
Yep,Art Tatum,Fats Waller,Oscar Peterson,All used tenths.

Man! I think you should publish an instructional stride CD. I am itchin to play more stride. - Bob
Reminds me of when Hugh Laurie (now Dr. House) played this in his apartment as Bertie Wooster, in the Jeeves & Wooster series on BBC.
In case you didn't know, Hugh Laurie has a couple albums of old blues. Good stuff.
