Kodak M38: How to Use + First Impressions

  • In this video, I talk about my first impression of using the Kodak M38. I compared it a bit to the Kodak M35 and the Dubblefilm SHOW camera. I also show how to use the camera, and a photowalk of when I tested the camera for the first time.
    Fact check:
    the sculpture I called "the screwdriver" is actually called the "Zipper."

    The cameras remind me of the Olympus XA series cameras. Similar thumb winding and size. However the build and lens on the Olympus is superior, the XA is truly a mini rangefinder with all the features. Maybe if you find one you can review it ;) Btw you have a very soothing style, I enjoy it. Thx!

    I just got mine and I have lots of questions in mind.
    1. Is it okay to let the film stay inside the camera for a long time? Not getting it coz I haven't finished all the shots.
    2. If it's outdoor and is too sunny, would you recommend not to use the flash?
    3. What are the tips to get the better/best shots?
    Hope to hear your insights.
    Bdw, I love the shots ;)

    • @Bonsees
      @Bonsees  Рік тому +2

      1. I wouldn’t recommend leaving film out for a looong time, but a month or two should be ok. I’ve left mine for a year and it’s ok, but I left it in a cool and dry place.
      2. Use the flash outside if your subject is backlit or in shadow, but really, it’s up to you 😅
      3. I suggest learning the basics of composition but don’t be afraid to experiment to see what works for you or not

    In bright sun, Gold 200 film may be a better choice. 400 speed film tends to overexpose the outdoor shots slightly. Just my opinion! Nice review video!

    • @Bonsees
      @Bonsees  3 роки тому +3

      If you're measuring in sunny-16, 200 ISO will probably have the best exposure in bright sunlight, so you're on to something 😂 I'm just always at 400 'cause I'm paranoid and it's the "safest." Had a past experience of getting underexposed shots with the lomography simple use camera haha

      I was taught to only wind the film on when you are going to take a photo. Leaving the shutter cocked not only wastes a frame on the film, it tensions the spring inside and if left for a long time will lead to failure of the mechanism or shutter speeds different to what they should be.

    • @Bonsees

      You have to turn the film advance wheel before you can take a photo because that’s how the camera readies it’s shutter to fire for your next shot. You just have to turn it until it doesn’t turn anymore (you’ll feel a hard stop and then you won’t be able to turn it again until after you take a photo), this will also move the number to the next. •  2 роки тому

    Hi! Would you know if in checking the m38 point and shoot camera is actually working (without film), the shutter must “open” and “close” when shutter button is clicked? Because that’s what I watched in some videos but the model is the m35 and the other one is an Olympus. So I’m wondering if it’s same with m38?

    • @Bonsees
      @Bonsees  2 роки тому

      If you don’t have film inside the M35 or M38, the film advance wheel won’t cock the shutter so it will not fire (the shutter will not open and close) if you press the shutter button. What you can do is trick the camera by turning the sprocket gear inside the camera back while turning the feel advance wheel (turn them in the same direction), and it should cock the shutter. It’s a bit complicated but lemme know if you need more directions

    Is using kodak ultramax through kodak m38 advisable for concerts?

    • @Bonsees
      @Bonsees  Рік тому

      Hmm that might be a stretch if the concert is at night/dimly lit, it depends on how bright the stage lighting is (and if they allow flash, some venues don’t). I know some folks who’ve used black and white film (Ilford HP5) with a similar plastic camera and were able to take good photos of an evening concert with a bright stage without using flash. I’d suggest either using an ISO 800 film instead if you wanna stick to colour (Lomography 800 is a great one, and of course there’s Portra 800 but it’s expensive), or perhaps a black and white film like HP5 which might be better because you won’t have to worry about colours getting all murky with underexposure. Hope this helps

    Hey! Newbie to film here and have been checking out your videos! I noticed that you also reviewed the the lomography simple use camera in another video too. Just wondering how you’d compare the simple use camera and the Kodak m38 in terms of the kinds of photos you get? Been meaning to get one of the two but am pretty torn. Some tips in deciding would be great! :)

    • @Bonsees
      @Bonsees  3 роки тому +1

      Maybe this video will give you an idea ua-cam.com/video/DK65rXpLQW0/v-deo.html
      If I were shown two photos taken with either cameras, I probably won’t be able to tell which camera was used to take which. Maybe my M35 and SHOW camera produce slightly sharper images, but that could also be because of the film. So I just tell people to choose based on the camera aesthetics/ergonomics/price. The Lomography simple use is still the cheapest (at least here in Alberta, Canada) and the smallest, but it’s also the hardest to reload. The Kodak cameras are easier to load with film and comes in a lot more colours.

    Hi, I am really clueless rn and need some advice. 😅 I only shot with simple non reuseable cameras before and with those it wasn’t possible to turn the little wheel (i forgot the right word) to the next photo if the film is full.
    Is it the same with this
    (Kodak m38)?
    Because I kind of forgot what film I put in and are anxious that I’ll take pictures which can’t be processed later on.
    Thank you in advance. 😅💕

    • @Bonsees
      @Bonsees  2 роки тому +1

      You should be fine. It’s sort of the same, the film rewind crank on these cameras just allows you to rewind the film back into the canister easily so you don’t have to break the camera in the dark room like what they have to do with disposable cameras. As long as the film is loaded correctly, I don’t see a reason why your film can’t be processed 😄

      @@Bonsees Thank you very much for your incredible fast response, but I think I explained it misleadingly. 😅 I meant the „loading“ of a new photo or like the setting to shoot another one. When u turn the wheel thingy on the right top, does it also stop moving or like won’t allow you to „load“ to the next photo if the film is full or will it turn on and on?

      @@alina8915 oooh like the film advance wheel. Yeah you have to keep turning it until it stops then you can take the next photo. If it keeps turning, the film probably didn’t catch on to the film take up spool 😄

      For 35mm colour, I usually go to a local drugstore with a photo lab (London Drugs) they’re pretty good. For B&W and medium format, I usually process myself at home. Sometimes, I’ll send my medium format film to Downtown Camera in Toronto for development and scanning

    • @Bonsees
      @Bonsees  2 роки тому

      @@wcyzabc6496 hmm S means you’re back to the beginning of the counter (start) and that usually happens when you open the back door. Did you accidentally open the back? Also, how many exposures did your film have? Some films only have 24 exposures and the film counter of the M38 goes from S to 36 (it shouldn’t have an E counter), so you could reach the end of the roll before the actual end of the counter. You might have pulled the film out of the cartridge in this case, which caused the film to lose tension with the camera. Try to rewind the film and see if you can rewind it, if you can’t and there’s no tension, it might be best to go to a photo lab that develops film and tell them what happened so they could open the camera in the dark and not ruin your film inside, just in case.
