  • During the summer of 2023 I took my 2019 KTM 790 Adventure S from Nova Scotia, Canada to the UK and Europe to continue my multi-media portraits series called The Motorcycle Portraits: themotorcycleportraits.net/ During the three months that I was on this trip I rode just over 10K miles. It was an epic adventure. I added another 37 new portraits to the series and had some amazing experiences.
Navigation was always going to be a challenge. In the past, I had used a Garmin Zumo XT but found that too many times, the unit would freeze on me at the most inopportune moments. So I got my hands on a Carpe-Iter to help with my navigation. carpe-iter.com/
They make an amazing tool which is basically a larger Android phone that sits above my normal display on the 790. It is weatherproof and charges from pins on the back and a cable on the side.
I am able to download apps such as Google Maps, Calimoto, I-Overlander, etc. Then I can simply view the display in front of my eyes at a size that is clear and legible.
Since I need glasses for closeup I can no longer clearly see my iPhone that is mounted to my handlebars as the display is too small. That makes the Carpe-Iter perfect.
Since I'm an Apple user and not in the Android world there is one drawback to the system and that is that I do not sync my Sena helmet headset with the Carpe. Instead, I sync it with my iPhone. This way I can make calls, listen to music, and hear turn-by-turn navigation directly from the phone to my helmet.
In order to use the Carpe-Iter, I simply mimic the search destination on the Carpe to what I have already selected on the phone. That could be Google Maps I-Overlander or Calimoto. in the end, I'm listening to the turn-by-turn from the phone but following along with the Carpe. If I was in the Android world then none of this would be an issue. I would simply sync my helmet with the Carpe and all the phone, music and navigation would come directly from the Carpe to my helmet. But that is life with an Apple :)
Regardless, I could not be happier with this unit. It has made riding so much safer now that I can see my directions in front of me.
I also use the "adventure controller" which was developed by the fine folks at Carpe-Iter to control the unit. I could of course control it with my finger the way I would a phone but thanks to this three-buttom/one joystick controller attached just to the right of my left grip I can make most selections on the unit directly from the controller.
Other than one day that was above 45 degrees C and all my devices were too hot to work the unit worked flawlessly and even on that hot day once I started moving and air began to circulate the Carpe began working again without an issue.
I put together this little video to explain a few things about my experience and some advice. I hope it helps.
    David

Thank you. I'm only at the early stages of working in motion so my vids are not too good yet. But, yeah the Carpe is amazing. With the adventure controller and it in your field of vision it makes life a lot easier. Even easier if you are already in the Android world.

Yes, you can absolutely use it in N. America. OF course, you will need a SIM card in it or be able to hotspot from your cell.

Hi David. Thank you for clearing that up. As an avid motorcyclist and photography enthusiast I am thoroughly enjoying your multi-media portrait series. My 5 foot 4 wife just started riding again after a 15 year hiatus. Her bike is G650GS. As you can imagine when I got to Tammy Lewin, A.K.A. Mind Body Moto Girl, I jumped out of my seat to show her. She is now an avid follower of her adventures. We live in Honduras and its too bad we missed her on her way down. Thank you again for the technical help and inspiration.

@@Gushn Thanks for checking out the site!!! that is great to hear about your wife as well. In fact, I've photographed more than a few smaller female riders for the series and they are all as inspiring as the next. Check out the one on Megs_Braap or Ash Mhyre. Too bad you missed Tammy, she is a great person with such a positive attitude. Maybe I'll see you on the road someplace. David

How is the vibration? Meaning can you see it down the road or is it jiggling around a lot ? What size is that table Carpe Iter ? Was wondering aobut Active 3 or 4 or 5 Galaxy and same apps that you use. Not sure best size either and how to mount on my Tiger 900 Rally Pro... Great video. Thanks !!!

I have no issues with vibration, I use the Carpe holder which has rubber mounts. The unit sits tight without bouncing around at all. You would have to inquire as to how to mount it to your specific bike. Hope that helps.

Did you consider another device like a tablet (Active Galaxy etc). YOu could have if you're not using the DMD2 software. I think yours has MORE NITS for brightness in the sun etc too.

@@kee7678 I did not consider another one. I started using DM2 but after a while, I figured it was not really needed so I stopped using it. I love it and have been very happy with it for my needs.

I have a similar set up on my Triumph Tiger 1200 rally, I just use my phone as a hotspot and tether to the device for Wi-Fi, however I do use DMD2 with downloaded maps on the device the Wi-Fi is only if I rarely use google maps

Using the phone as a hotspot makes total sense! However, I have an old At&t plan that is cheap, and as a result, they don't offer hotspotting :(

@@kee7678 i use a damped quadlock mount attached to my Garmin mount with 3d printed adapter, vibes are fine, the phone is a Samsung a34 with 1000 nits brightness and ip64 rated for waterproofness, it’s been great so far

    You don’t use DMD2????

    • @TheDavidGoldmanphoto
      @TheDavidGoldmanphoto  5 місяців тому

Nope, not since I realized it’s really only an app over the main unit. Sure, it looks cool but I found it better to just setup my home screen with the apps I’m most likely to use (Calimoto, Google Maps, I-overlander) vs being forced to look at apps I don’t really use. I should also add that I was not able to sync my bikes settings(RPM,speed, temperature etc) with the DM2 so it seemed like a waste. If I was able to sync then I might have been a bit more inclined to stick with DM2.
