I was lucky enough to watch dale race. Went to a couple of his last wins. I still hate we lost dale, I think nascar would be a lot different today and he’d always been a team owner and wouldn’t put past him running some one off races for a long time. I believe jr would of won a lot more and always been with dei. He loved racing, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Every sports are slowly dying and being replaced by virtual things like video games because kids rather watch fake danger than no danger at all. Danger litteraly was the only thing making sports and motorsports enjoyable and impressive.
Like i always say if people were impressed by safety it would be possible to fill the coliseum of Rome for a chess championship.
Yeah sure i don't want people to die. Safety still is a thing i don't mind most upgrades they had on this side. That being said every safety change which had an impact on the actual essence of these races is a huge let down. We almost tore our house apart that day. Yelling and screaming, jumping up and down. I remember watching ESPN’s coverage and seeing him riding in a golf cart to do an interview with them for tv some 3 hours after the race and he still had his race suit on. And as I said he was in a golf cart getting a ride. But I fully believe he could have floated all the way there that day. And I felt like I could just float on air as well. Then fast forward 3 years, and I had that same elated, floating feeling as I watched Dale do something I never thought I would ever see. He wasn’t trying to win. He was clearly (to any and everyone watching) holding back the field so that his Son, Dale Jr., and the driver that no one could believe that Dale would hire to be a teammate to his son, Michael (0-wins in 462 starts) Waltrip, battle it out for the Daytona 500 win. And I can’t imagine the grin he must of had on his face as he had the best seat to see it all unfold from his third place position on the track. I know I was floating on air watching Jr. and Waltrip fight it out with Dale holding back the rest of the field. And I am sure that Dale was gonna be proud of his boy, and Michael no matter who won. But Michael winning had to be an extra good feeling as he had always felt Michael just needed good equipment to win, and that he had the talent (even though no one else believed it), and he was right. Then it happened...and it was weird. As good as I felt, and was floating around, I knew when I saw the wreck that there was something different about that wreck. I still don’t know why, it was a really tame looking wreck. Especially considering what most wrecks look like at Daytona. This was tame in comparison. But I wasn’t floating anymore, even as Michael took the checkered flag. I sat down and put my head in my hands and prayed. But I knew before the ambulance ever left the track that Dale was gone. How I knew I do not know. But I did. And not only did dale die on that fateful day. But so did NASCAR. It has never been the same nor will it. RIP DALE, YOU WERE AND ARE THE MAN.

Daytona was sort of a microcosm of Dale's career. He won more races there than anyone (in spite of needing 20 years to win the 500). Obviously it's a terrible tragedy that we lost him, but if it was going to happen, it was fitting in a way that it would happen at Daytona.

Hate to tell ya young man, and it's not your fault, as most of us longtime hardcore NASCAR fans truly feel sorry for the younger generations today..........because we all QUIT watching & supporting NASCAR. Why? Because NASCAR shit on their biggest longtime fans when they made the entire sport into something that isn't even recognizable anymore. And those corrupt bastards in control now did it in every way imaginable. They have literally made it "the NFL or NBA on wheels"..........It's a total disgrace. They even REMOVED many of the grandstands due to us hardcore fans no longer attending and to make the place still look like "a packed house". Even the ratings & viewership on TV has fallen through the floor. This is what happens when their corrupt GREED allows a bunch of rich liberal freaks to sponsor & take over the sport. Even many of the better senior drivers who still had quite a few years of racing left walked away.

@benny pitt You're an idiot. Dale had the respect of every driver and crewmen at the track, That's why they are all lined up on pit road to high five him after he won the race. Have you ever seen that happen with any other driver? It sounds like your father knew what it was all about. You being a Bill Elliott fan I can see why you don't get it. You couldn't have been much of an Elliott fan either, you spelled Bills last name wrong.

Or for more detail. The pushrod did Fail or bend but they popped a new one in and it fixed it. But Dale and the team lost confidence in the engine just because they didn’t trust it after the rod was bent. For all they knew it could be a real issue and happen during the race. So they swapped it. - but in racing I’ve faked engine troubles several times so I could put my cheated up parts in because the tech is a lot more relaxed the second time around sometimes they wouldn’t even send someone over to check out the engine after we “Fixed” the issue. Lol we use to change engines multiple times because they couldn’t withstand the abuse. Like today it’s 75yrs of engine knowledge to get a reliable engine. But I really miss the 90s when we had to take care of the car a lot more.
