Changes to sidechaining in REAPER 7

- I'm re-posting this section of What's new in REAPER v7 because it is too important of a change to be overlooked or forgotten about.
When dragging to create sends, where you drag to, or from, makes a difference on the outcome.
What's new is dragging to an FX will always increase the track channels and route to those new channels.
Which is great when that is what you want, and terrible in other situations.
Thanks for watching!

shoulda left it as it was before, but with shift adding the extra channels.
I prefer it the old way. Now this is another thing to have in consideration
Thanks so much for making videos about small but important changes!
I just wasted so much time watching videos of "the old way" and it was so much harder than this way. THANK YOU FOR THIS!
I love Reaper, but this took an already convoluted process and made it even more so. It's a simple check box in Studio One and Logic, but it wouldn't be Reaper if we didn't have to do things the hard way.
Dude, yeah and Bitwig and Cubase both make it crazy easy as well
Yeah I don't understand why they can't make it a more simple process.
its drag and drop? how is that hard?
Sure it’s drag and drop, but in other DAW’s you don’t need to worry about pin configs and channel assignments. I get that it’s more powerful in Reaper, but sometimes the simplest approach is the best approach. Basically, I shouldn’t have to give that much thought to sidechains - especially when it’s a checkbox in other DAW’s.
Why won’t my drag n drop work ?
I had no idea you could drag/drop for sends at all
Yeah...nope.
Can the default behaviour be changed to how it was in the preferences?
Thx for this video, I usually use the send section of the mixer but it's good to know this might happen. Stay cool Jon!
yeah I wasn't sure about this change. I think they should (have) reused aux pins if already connected to a particular plugin, if a new send is created to that same plugin. IIWII, probably solves some other use cases I care less about...
Very good to know. Thanks Jon!
Thanks for this!
Can't you just drag and release as usual, and change 5/6 to 3/4 in the dropdown? TBH I think that's easier than remembering exactly where you're allowed to drag to/from for it to work as you want.
Yes
Thank you, this would’ve taken me six months to figure out :-)
This is soooo cool!
Thank you for the tip
Wow! I didn't know you can drop route onto a plugin!
Thank you!
hope me old brain gonna remember this...cool tip and check if gonna use this in the future. otherwise I still can watch the video
new to reaper. Love it. Not so this sidechaining trouble... quite a few issues. Fabfilter Pro Q3 not ducking jet😊
IIRC, Pro Q3 has extra steps, but I don’t have it.
thanks jon
glad I saw this
I sidechain really silly in reaper. I put my compressor on a folder track I have my kick midi copied over into a track in this folder and it us using reasamplomatic on this "kick trigger track". Reasamplomatic i using a quick snare or side stick hit and this track is not being sent anywhere, so it is not being heard. but, it is being side chained into that compressor on the folder track. Then i just have anything I want in that any track either put it in there or route it there in a track and it will be compressed by the "kick trigger" i learned this from a really good EDM producer. works great. I save it as a track template. I've never seen anyone else set it up like this
I’ve done it a couple times. I called it a ghost sidechain
I call these type of "trigger tracks" "TIK"s, and use them to trigger gates for live drums. Most people call them "TRIG" (for "triggers).
thx
Do you have a downloadable podcast for work to listen to tips on Reaper, or do we need to "see" them?
Maybe there is a script that can call the sidechain function?
For some reason the sidechain sends don't work for me for plugins inside and put after a parallel container. Anyone else experiencing that?
Oh no, hope there will be a preference to disable this new behaviour that I am so used to
Does this affect sends and sidechainings made with the "old" method?
EG: In a project with those old sidechaining, do I need to remake everything with this new method?
doesn't change existing old projects. this only changes what happens when you drag and drop routing onto plugins.
Can you tell me what theme u use?
REAPER 7
do you have custom skins on your plugins?
just MacOS dark mode.
I am probably overthinking this but....I have reacomp on my bass track. I have the compressor set so that the bass sounds good. If I then add a sidechain that is triggered by the kick, will that sidechain still allow the compressor to work for the bass track when the kick is not triggering it? I hope my question is clear.
you would have to add another compressor that is keyed to the kick for sidechain compression if you want your main bass compression to sound right.
if you just add a sidechain key from the kick to your current bass compressor it will only "compress" when the kick happens, and otherwise won't do anything.
use 2 compressors. 1 for the sound you want, 1 for ducking.
@@TheREAPERBlog thanks!
Can’t get my menus in dark mode, please help. Everything else is dark. Win 11
Not supported non windows. reaper uses the OS window colors. This is Mac os
bad + confusing change
all that JUST too sidechain, omfg what a convulated ass process. There was absolutely no reason the devs needed to do sidechaining like that AT ALL
Reaper needs to be more user friendly and less beta. Im only using it for low cpu. But the workflow isnt great.
