- HP Umpire Dan Iassogna ejected Cardinals DH Willson Contreras for arguing a pair of strike one and two calls leading up to a 5th-inning strikeout in Seattle. We also talk about an automatic ball penalty awarding a walk to Mariners batter Julio Rodriguez in the 7th inning when Cardinals pitcher Genesis Cabrera violated the so-called Max Scherzer rule by coming set before the batter was ready in the box and alert to the pitcher. HP Umpire Iassogna warned Cabrera on the first offense, but when Cabrera did the exact same thing merely seconds later, Iassogna enforced the pace-of-play / pitch clock rule's penalty and added a ball to the 3-2 count, allowing Rodriguez to walk to first.
Not every day you get the "stop play for ejection" just as the pitcher is getting ready to pitch.

I hate this stupid pitch clock rule….not so much the rule, but the implementation and penalty procedures
I don't like how it was adapted either. Personally, I like the NCAA's pitch clock rule better. The NCAA's adaptation of the rule doesn't limit how many times a pitcher can attempt to pick off a runner. However, it only permit one "reset" (disengagement without throwing to a base). The penalty for the clock violation is the same (strike if on the batter/ball if on the pitcher). In addition the penalty for violating the one "reset" rule is just a ball, not a balk.
I like the pitch clock has shortened games. Yet, its effect feels too rushed from batter to batter. The 15/20 time ought to be at least 18/23, if not 20/25. And limiting the pick-off play is absurd. Now a stolen base is right up there with starting the 10th with a man on 2nd (ought to be the 12th, if the game goes that far). A stolen base ought to be a function of ability; not a routine gimme.
Yeah, I think the Scherzer rule is dumb now, especially since, as you said, the pitchers were trying to exploit one thing so they made a rule and now hitters are trying to exploit another thing. Just enforce the previously-existing quick pitch rules and you won't need the Scherzer rule and it'll be one less thing to worry about.

I was at this game, the pitch clock violation was very confusing because the pitch clock was still ticking in the stadium and we had nobody to explain it to us.
@@HolySoopCoolers You need to attend a few baseball games. The entire crowd was confused by this same type of situation at a Rays game I went to recently. The clock was still ticking, it was an abrupt (although likely correct) call, but no one informed the fans what actually happened. I can, and do, read the rule book and keep up with this stuff, but when you're sitting behind third base and have your eyes in one general direction, you're not going to detect the "confirmation" between pitcher and batter. The umpires need to be REQUIRED by MLB to at least announce a call so the people can keep score.
Baseball needs to up its game regarding explaining what is going on when there's an unusual circumstance. The NFL has done a good job at that the last few years.

What is the point of Umps having Mics if they’re not using them. For certain violations they should use the mic to announce the violation instead of hoping the Home Team Announcers are being heard in the stadium to announce it for them.
Regarding batters not looking up until the clock ticks down, I think it's the appropriate thing to do. As a batter, once you've demonstrated that you're alert to the pitcher, they can pitch, even if you weren't actually ready. In spring training we saw a lot of that, where the batter would get in the box and look up, then back down to continue their routine, only to have the ball blow by them. I don't want to see batters intentionally running the clock down every single pitch, but as a habit to be developed in order to never get caught by premature "apparent alertness", staring at the dirt until you're ACTUALLY ready is the way to go. You can teach that from Little League.
This might be the first time I ever heard an umpire use the player’s name while ejecting him. Didn’t understand why the manager was asking who when the umpire clearly said Wilson’s name. Interesting!
It happens more common than you think? Most of the time it's inaudible.
In this case, which is what MLB requires Umpires to do, the umpire issued a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. The mechanic or signal that conveys that is him raising his arm and holding up his hand(palm out, fingers up)out in front of him. Like a stop sign, as if he's signaling, "no...stop, that's enough!" I can only speculate, but can come pretty close to what was said, in my opinion.
Umpire: "Alright, this is your warning." "Don't do that shit to me, again!
Player: "Okay, _____. I'm sorry about that."
To the point and hopefully to offer my opinion to try to offer possible insight...
When an Umpire issues an official warning, he must make note of it on his line-up card so he has it for reference in writing his game report.
I'm not sure if there was enough time for him to do this, as the player's conduct escalated in the dugout by screaming obscenities at the umpire, to the point he was ejected.
If not, he has already made a mental note of the player's name, number, inning, and number of outs. If he hasn't had a chance to write this info on his line up card, he's consciously running his name in his head so he can write it down, first chance he gets?
Another note is that by calling his name while ejecting the player, means he is telling everyone who he has ejected from the game, therefore eliminating the questions of whose been ejected, as well as, letting it be known that he is 100% who he is ejecting from the game! The umpire handled great! He did it exactly the way umpire development advises Umpires to do in this situation. I can't comment on his judgement or calls, because I wasn't there?

I said the umpire held his hand up in what seems to be a warning, he actually points. Pointing is the correct mechanic along with a verbal statement saying, "This is your warning." Sorry about that.
It easier to hear on the broadcast when you're looking for it vs live when you're not.

I'm actually amazed he wasn't thrown out for slamming the bat but then realized that 1. There is no ground for an ejection there so the umpire would definitely be in trouble and 2. I have a feeling the ump possibly thought the bat slam could have been anger towards swinging at that picth and not the calls.
It's little bit of both swinging at the bad pitch, but also that he felt like he had to since the first two strikes were so low. He felt like he had to extend the zone. It's more frustration at being forced to make a bad swing by the ump making bad calls.
No grounds for an ejection? Slamming the bat on the ground is for sure a equipment violation.
He turned toward the umpire and slammed it in front of him. Maybe if he had done it in a different direction, Iassogna would have been a little more lenient.

I have no problem with batters managing the pitch clock. It’s a reasonable response to the new rules-an evolution of the game-within-a-game. If they commit a violation, they suffer the penalty. If no violation, then the pitcher still has 8-ish seconds to use before pitching or disengaging.
Some terrible calls by that umpire there - this year is off to a really bad start as far as that goes.
Captain clarification here: are umpires limited to a certain time frame to ejected a player (eg within 10 seconds of deciding an ejectable offense has occurred)? Seems dangerous to call time in the middle of a pitcher's motion to eject a player that's not on the field of play. Could he have waited until after the pitch?
I saw that too. I think the ump violated the time out rule that batters must adhere to, so the league should fine the ump! lol

I caught for 15 yrs and when I was at bat I never complained about pitch call..why? Because I wanted the same type of pitches called in my pitcher’s favor when he was on the mound.
Good point. Maybe in the mind of Contreras, he was upset because he didn’t think that he had been getting that same strike call when he was catching pitches from his pitchers. But yes, as a general rule, if you’re a pitcher or catcher and you get a bad strike call against you while batting, get over it. If another position player is upset over a bad strike call, he may have a beef. Overall though, I would prefer a more consistent strike zone.
Although Contreras is a catcher when he plays the field, he was the DH for this game. So he didn’t have that same concern about his pitcher getting the same calls.
The pitch-clock rules regarding the situation involving batters strategically not looking up at the plate until just before the time he has to be ready according to those rules and other related situations definitely need some tweaking.
If the batter is getting ready to face a plus 90 pitch, not looking at the pitcher until he absolutely has to, is by far a darn good strategy.
If the batter chooses not to look up till eight then the pitcher should be allowed to set for delivery. Change the rule and trash the gamesmenship.
If the batter waits till 8 seconds to look then it's a strike (if they look by 9 seconds it's legal)
But I do agree, they maybe should change it to having both feet in the box by 10 seconds.
I agree. The gamesmanship will never stop by making rules to try to stop it. Give the umpire discretion to keep gamesmanship in check by warning and penalizing abuse.

Im confused. A batter is allowed to completely smash his bat right at home plate in front of the umpire after striking out and it’s nothing but a warning and an equipment violation. But if you casually toss your batting gloves and arm pad away with your back to the ump like Urias did for the Orioles the other day that’s an ejection?? Huh?
Throwing or breaking equipment in disgust is a violation of MLB rules and standards of conduct. The penalty is a $10,000 fine, and an equipment violation warning. The prescribed penalty for continued throwing of equipment is immediate ejection. Urias threw his bat, and got away with it. Then he threw his batting gloves, and received an EQ violation warning. Then he threw his arm pad, and got ejected. It's very simple. F around and find out. Urias was told that the stove was hot, but he decided to touch it anyway.
@@teebob21 Ok. But I have watched hundreds of guys that strike out at the end of an inning. They don't head back to the dugout. Instead they toss their bat towards the bat boy. They take off their gloves and arm pad and toss it towards the bat boy and they take of their ankle pad and toss it towards the bat boy. Someone brings them their glove and they head out to the outfield. They have thrown their equipment but they don't get ejected.

They require the umpire to guess if he was disgusted at the umpire or disgusted at himself for striking out? Why wasn't Contreras immediately ejected after striking out and smashing his bat in front of the umpire? Did the umpire think maybe Contreras broke his bat because he was mad at himself?
@@theburnetts In the case of Contreras, no determination of intent is necessary. Improper use of equipment will get you an equipment violation and a $10,000 fine.
Official Baseball Rule 8.01(d) grants umpires the discretion to eject any participant “for objecting to decisions or for unsportsmanlike conduct or language.” In addition, there are additional situations listed in the Official Baseball Rules and the Rule Interpretations portion of this manual that result in immediate ejection.
The pertinent section of the umpire's manual is "Standards for Removal from the Game" in which it states (among with several other bullet points) "Throwing equipment in disgust of an umpire’s call may be a ground for ejection. Umpires are encouraged to utilize equipment violations as an intermediary step to warn and discipline a player while attempting to keep the player in the game. If the violation is deemed extremely severe, the umpire may eject the offender immediately."
In other words, the warning is a courtesy and is not required. However, once you get an equipment warning, you're going to get ejected if you keep throwing your shit to make a point.
I don’t even know if Julio was trying to take advantage of the a her re tule here considering the fact that the pitcher came set with like 16 seconds left on the clock. If it was down to 9 or 10 that would make more sense.
I made a comment on your video about the Max Scherzer rule being implemented and how it gives all control of the pace of play to the batter which I thought was dumb. I would prefer they let pitchers get set and then just risk getting called for a quick pitch.

Baseball is played for the fan. Yeah the players play for the money. However if there were no fans there would be no money. As a fan these rules are ruining baseball. You can’t make a rule then expect a person who has been trained for years something they do automatically and not have problems. Umps have to much power, the throwing of equipment arguing balls and strikes are in my opinion just dumb. I get speed up baseball. But how much money do stadiums lose by the sped up games? It’s about the money right? I bet mlb didn’t think about that. The infield shift is another dumb rule, bigger bases? Who cares?

Love the mind games. Can the rule book be adjusted mid season? Scherzer did his in spring training.
What would the adjustment be?
I think it should be something like the batter needs to have 2 feet in the box by 10 seconds (no eye contact requirement/language). Batter can do whatever they want when they have 2 feet in box (like swing/twirl the bat). The pitcher can throw the ball once both feet are in the batters box, whether or not the batter is engaged/looking.
This allows batter some freedom jn the box while the pitcher is about to pitch, also gives batter time to reset outside the box, forces batter to be ready as soon as they step into box, doesn't allow this strategy to happen.
Pitcher doesn't have to worry about making eye contact (and umpire having to look for that). Pitcher can clearly tell when they are allowed to start windup or get in set position when batter has both feet in box. This still applies the Max rule.
They did that to add the illegal substance check mid-season two years ago.

Hey Lindsay one thing we don't see is an umpire's view when calling balls and strikes.
Would it be possible to set that up as a training exercise and test us "experts" calling for robo ump? Need to see angle shown here PLUS from the Home Plate Umpire's mask. But ONLY show the umpire view and ask us to make the call seeing it once without a strike zone overlay.
Ask T-Mac to help. Need a pitcher that throws a bit of nasty good enough to paint the corners. A batter in the box. A catcher.

I believe SNY had a "behind the umpire" feed during a few games. Haven't seen it in a long time, but it exists, and MLB has cameras beyond the two telecasts they can refer to.

Some games were showing the "ump cam" earlier in the season, but it seems like they stopped doing that for some reason.

MLB's internal camera views are their property - yes, would be cool if we could see all of them, or even switch on our own using an app, but that's their choice.

How do I feel about the lock eyes rule? It's fine. Pitchers play mind games with hitters. Hitters should be able to play mind games with the pitchers. If we're going to have a pitch clock with various timing marks that players need to hit, both are free to take advantage of it to their own benefit. Take advantage of an antsy hitter by being slow to come set. Take advantage of an antsy pitcher by being slow to get ready in the box.

Maybe I'm missing something but why can't we just do this: Between 8 and 0 seconds, the pitcher can pitch, doesn't matter if the batter ready or not.
I think pitchers ought to be able to pitch as fast as they want, but on a clock so they cant pitch too slowly. Batters can ask for time, but dont have to get it. Otherwise, batters need to be ready when pitchers are.
I think they need to quit tinkering with the game. Now they are having to deal with unintended consequences which cause more rule changes and more unintended consequences. The game was fine before all these changes.
I bow in total respect to someone speaking reasonably about these situations, hobonickel. These new rules MUST GO!
Baseball doesn't need more "drama" gamesmanship getting in the way of competition. Rule change isn't saving much time anyway. So what if the game goes 2:45 hours now instead of 3 hours last year. Is 15 minutes worth all this? I say NO.

Usually the equipment violation itself is a fine, but it's probably going to increase because of the ejection.
As a Cardinal fan this is common when facing west coast teams. The umps always pull BS and have inconsistent strike zones as well.

In my non expert opinion those pitches broke pretty hard near the zone and the umpire calls it live without an on screen box in front of him.

No, but I don't have to be an orthopedic surgeon to determine that a doctor botched my knee operation.
I understand calling balls and strikes can be tricky at times but when pro players are having to take at bats like its highschool ball because these umps be giving a ball on either side and up and down every game it gets a little old fast. If that is the new zone because things are going faster now make it a rule or else these zones need to tighten up.
Umpires are more accurate than ever before pitchfx/statcast could be used to improve, but we're at the limit of human perception. At this point, getting mad at umpires for missing some calls on pitches is like getting mad at a river for flowing in an inconvenient direction. There's literally nothing that can be done until MLB introduces a computer assisted strikezone
@@TurnedToast Except that in this case, it was two pitches in a single at bat. If those pitches are called correctly, the second miss is ball four. After both of those, I wouldn't be surprised if he figured he needed to swing at anything that was over the dirt circle around the plate.

So, I understand the reasoning to want to speed up the game. But a time clock in baseball is a no go for me. When I think of a time clock, I think of it in football. Also, I feel like there have been more ejections this early in the season then there have ever been. It seems like commissioner of MLB is doing everything he can to screw up baseball. There was no such thing as equipment violation when I umpired in 80s. If they did something with equipment while mad at themselves then we would ignore it. If it was due to a call we made we would tell them to knock it off. No fines unless they kept doing it and got ejected. To be fair though players and managers back then were making average middle class salaries, so umpires didn’t eject as fast as they do now. Money ruined baseball.

I don’t think the pay was really a bad thing. It made baseball players seem more like normal people and winning meant more to them than the money. But yes the 80s were the last great decade of baseball. 90s everything started getting commercialized with advertising and salaries were becoming rich. Also the steroids started becoming widespread and everyone just wanted to hit home runs. No more of the classic gritty baserunning either.
