    Until about 10 or so years ago, Fort Snelling was a "hold" in Minnesota's land ownership records. Fort Snelling was established when Minnesota was still a territory. When the federal government granted the land to the state, it reserved ownership of Fort Snelling, and did not think to include a "springing" grant to the state in the event the fort was ever relinquished in the future. Fast forward to the 1980's, when the US military divested itself of many of its obsolete land holdings, including Fort Snelling. This left Fort Snelling as a bubble of land with no owner. Nobody figured that out until around 2015 (plus or minus), when a developer did title work on the land as part of due diligence for a potential development project. It took an act of Congress and an act of the Minnesota legislature to convey that land to the State of Minnesota.

    Locals will be happy to teach you how to properly pronounce Hmong, Wabasha & Calhoun's old & new name. We have great food too & are still somewhat of a fashion test site.

      It's likely an AI-generated voice app doing the mispronouncing.

    6:37 Ummm... Lake Calhorn? You definitely meant Calhoun. But that doesn't matter. The lake's name is now Bde Maka Ska which is its official historic Native name and was legally adopted in 2017. And that change happened 4 YEARS before this video. So I don't quite get what is happening here.

    • @emeryjl
      @emeryjl Рік тому

      Besides not getting what happened here, you also got your facts about the naming of the lake wrong. While the request to change the name was approved in 2017, the name was not legally changed at the state level until January 2018. The federal government did not approve the name change until June 2018.

      WRONG. This is a video for visitors. If it was for people who live here, it would have been called "Best Things to Do in Minneapolis & St. Paul for people who already live there" - Also I bet/would hope you have been to most of these places, but only once. Just like a visitor would. The only thing I've never done/been to on this list is the axe throwing... that seems very commercial/anything that could be anywhere. Not sure why that was included. If you live here and haven't been to a majority of these places, then you should go. If you're not interested, then you wouldn't go to most popular attractions in ANY city.
