  • Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. Okay, follow up question from episode 87........you mentioned wanting to pick only one pattern to knit forever from each category. So what would those be? I assume the DRK socks because you mentioned those, and the DRK sweater because that was the one you chose for the one and only, but what about other categories?
    2. What are your favorite brand of knitting needles & why? And do you prefer interchangeable sets or solid/single size & length needles? If you prefer the latter, how do you store them?
    3. I recently finished a weekender light out of my handspun yarn and it has absolutely lit a fire under me to knit with more of my handspun yarn. What would be your advice for the next sweater or cardigan pattern I could knit with handspun. I prefer fingering weight to sport but at open to anything. Thank you for a continuous flow of wonderful patterns to knit.
    4. Hi, Andrea! I am taking part in the S2Kit Weekender KAL this year. I spun some beautiful 2 ply BFL in 3 different colorways (2 bumps each) done up in a fractal. The first bump is spun from head to toe in one long continuous color and then the second is broken up into small chunks to be spun and plied with the other two bumps of long continuous color. This way the long continuous bump is never piled with itself. This is proving problematic with knitting the front and back separate. So, I was considering to add stitches where the pattern says to divide for front and back, and then continuing in the round in order to steek for the sleeves. How would you go about doing this? About how many stitches would you add? Did I mention this is my first time steeking...ever! yikes Any other tips would be fantastic! For reference I am knitting size number 4 with 58 stitches on front and back, and then picking up 68 for the sleeve. Thank you for being my knitting answer lady and keeping me company on Fridays while I knit at the laundromat. Have a fabulous weekend!
    5. Hi Andrea. I notice you frequently use the long trail tubular bind off in your patterns. I always had a really difficult time doing this BO until I was introduced to the “1x1 invisible BO” which seems a LOT like the long tail tubular bind off but all on one needle. Questions… are these the same thing? Is it possible to do the long tail tubular bind off on one needle? (For some reason I get all confused when I add a second needle). And finally, do you have any tips to put down and pick up your knitting while doing the tubular BO. I find I never have enough time to do it in one sitting (yay! Toddlers) and always have a hard time knowing where I left off when I pick it up again.

My advice for doing the Italian / tubular bind off (as well as grafting by the Kitchener stitch) is to do all the four steps, and ALWAYS do the four steps before putting down the project and doing anything else that requires your attention. 😂

Yes! I only use my lykke needles with the Knitter's Pride Mindful cables, which are very similar to the Chiagoo red cables.

Chiagoo needles are my favorites, too. I just treated myself to a set of Chiagoo wooden tips and they came with the spin cords - ALL pieces are interchangeable with the metal tips and red cords. Staying with a single brand has its advantages! I have supplemented my sets with additional cords, extra tips in the sizes I use most, and now have a completely versatile collection.

I did the same with my Chiagoo bamboo tips I purchased years ago! Don’t know if they changed their cables on those since I bought them, but they are not the same fabulous red cable and they would kink, which also drives me crazy. But I love the bamboo tips and, like you, I use them with my red cables. ❤

My tip for the Lykke cords…buy the cords from the Knitter’s Pride Mindful collection. They are aqua and are just like the Chiaogoo Cords…nylon coated stainless, but they also swivel. Would seriously go great with your pink tips especially. I use them with my driftwood set and they are fantastic!

Hi Andrea. When I have curly needle cords, I boil water and run the cord through the steam back and forth a few times and voila! A relaxed cord ready for casting on.

I love ChiaoGoo too. And I am an avid magic loop knitter. When I bought the mini set - Size 0-3, I loved the tiny, flexible cords that came with them. They were so much more flexible than the regular red cords. I discovered the adapters so that you can use the mini cords on larger size ChiaGoo needles. I purchases several 40+ inch cords that fit the mini’s and use the adaptors to use those cords on my larger ChiaoGoo’s. They are now the only cords I use!

If you want to try an amazing wooden needle, try the Kinki Amibari. Super pliable soft non memory cords, simple twist join that doesn’t come apart and the bamboo is so soft and feels heavenly in your hands.

When I’m ready to bind off, I use two dpns, parallel to each other. I slip the knit sts onto the front dpn, and the purl sts onto the back dpn, and simply dp the Kitchener stitch. When I get to three sts on each needle, I’ll slip more sts on the dpn!

Another vote for ChiaoGoo - I almost always use metal but if I’m having trouble getting gauge I use the ChiaoGoo bamboo needles. They come with a clear (I think nylon?) swivel cord but have the same join as the metal tips so can be used with the red cords. Best of both worlds!

I love my Lykke needles! The sensory experience is so important for me, and I knit really tight so I find the ultra-pointy tips of the Chiagoo to be a bit painful sometimes. I love how many options there are available and how every knitter can find a good fit!

I am surprised Lantern Moon needles aren’t more popular. They have everything you were talking about - wooden needles, the nylon coated stainless steel cord that doesn’t curl, a swivel end to the cord, plus a beautiful aesthetic! I’m new to interchangeable but have been pleased with them. My only complaint is that they don’t go down to size 0. That might be too thin for wooden needles.

I recently bought a lykke interchangeable tunisian crochet hook set because it was beautiful and it wanted me to own it. But I'm spoiled with my chiagoo cords from my knitting needles. To put it nicely the lykke cords are not my preference. I heard some where that the knitter's pride swivel cords will fit the lykke needles and hooks. I ordered some today. While they may never warm my soul like a chiagoo cord hopefully the swivel cords help.

I only use Lykke needles. I love them and I steam the new cords and lay them out to straighten them. Then they work perfect and I only have to do that once with no more coiling. I also have different lengths of the swivel cords as well. The case that comes with the interchangeable set is perfect!

I wanted to thank you for the kitchener-on-one-needle tutorial - I just used that for a bind off this week, and the most valuable part was the explanation that you prep the stitch you want to bind off with the opposite. That's the only thing that's ever let me actually keep that in my head and know where I am in the bind off if I otherwise lose track!

I have only used circular needles for years to knit and then I discovered interchangeable needles. I have never looked back. After using several different brands a friend recommended Chiagoo. I was sold. I now have a complete set of 5in and 4in and the sock set. Well worth the money I spent on them. Hey Andrea! I totally agree that the red cords are the best from Cjiagoo, but did you know their "wooden" bamboo needles work with the red cable cords? I love them. They have a nice pointy tip. I have Lykke interchangables as well as use them often but also get irritated with the cords. I don't need a spinner type, so when I discovered the red cables and the Chiagoo Spins were compatible, I tried them and loved them.

On the Chiaogoo Shorties (the blue set) the needles are 2" and 3". I was surprised you didn't mention the Chiaogoo bamboo needles. They do have a different cord which is also lovely. It does twist independently with the needle and is a clear plastic more traditional looking cord but in true Chiaogoo form it is pretty wonderful. But, if you don't like it you can use your red Chiaogoo cords with them. There is also a new shortie set with large needle sizes (US 9, 10, 10.5 and 11). Don't use them as much but they are nice for sleeves on a bulky weight sweater or hat. Love them. And the newest edition which should be available in a week or so is the ChiaoGoo Forté Special Edition Interchangeable Knitting Set. Tips are stainless steel and the body of the needle is African Blackwood. Cables are a swivel interchangeable cables. Needle sizes US 2 to US 15. Seems to be a bit pricey but you know it will be wonderful. I sound like I am doing a Chiaogoo commercial. Ha, Ha! Always look forward to your weekly podcast.

I love the Chia Goo as well! I've just gotten the new Forte set as well. Signature Needle Arts circular are also very good: available with super pointy (stiletto) tips, extremely smooth joins, cords don't twist or kink, and tips are color-coded. Negatives are cost (as much as $42 for a needle and cable assembly), they are not truly interchangeable (5-inch tips will only work with cables meant for that tip), and I've had the cables snap off completely from the metal join.

But if I want wood I always go back to my lantern moon & a big reason for that is because their cords are the same as chiaogoos with that nylon coating that causes it to not kink at all! I loved the part about the knitting needles. I'm a big Chiaogoo fan as well, have the mini set from 1.5mm to 2.5mm and the big set with small/large cables and tips. So many knitting podcasters are raving about 9" circs and short tips but I never could make this work for me. So maybe that really is because I'm a picker instead of a thrower? Or maybe because I have somewhat large hands and long fingers and am a tight knitter? Anyway, food for thought. Excellent episode a always! Greetings from Vienna/Austria ❤

I'm a Chiaogoo girl too! They just came out with swivel cables, still metal coated with nylon, and a large set of shorties in a yellow pouch. Looking at wooden needles too and decided on the Lantern Moon as they have a cord similar to Chiaogoo's, but they're not compatible unfortunately.

Literally bought the 3.5" pink Lykke set to supplement my 5" CG set two days ago because I saw you using them. LOL. Now I have regrets! Here's hoping the new cables are better! Honestly mostly bought them for 16" work anyway so maybe not an issue. So pretty though!

I've been a Chiaogoo Red Lace fan for a while, and recently got a few of the new Swiv360 cords to try out. My experience is that the join between the plastic-coated steel cord and the round metal screw in sections is not as seamless as the join on the Red Lace cords. My yarn is constantly catching on the join as the stitches slide down the cord-this is the same issue I had with the Chiaogoo Spin cords (the transparent plastic cords). I hope they don't discontinue the Red Lace cords because the Swiv360 are NOT a good replacement.

For wood needles with rotating cords that don't kink: Takumi Clover! Made of bamboo. They are amazing! Plus you can often find them cheaper than Lykke.🤩
