Often I see short rows mentioned and German short rows specifically but had no clue what they were or when they were used. You explained them perfectly. Bring on the short rows!
I cannot begin to tell you how helpful your schematic was in explaining short rows so that I could understand the concept. There apparently was an error in the pattern that I am working and your drawing helped me understand how to fix it! thank you so much!
This is fabulous! Thank you for the video. I had no idea what “short row” means in my sweater pattern, and this is really for my short row 101! Awesome and detailed explanation!
This made everything so clear, thank you so much! I’m an advanced beginner and am knitting my first cardigan and I encountered short rows for the first time. Every tutorial I’ve found hasn’t made any sense to me. Your video has been such a help!
Thank you so very much . You have explained why we do them and how to . The best explanation I have seen so far. Not just how to do the actual short row method . I have been questioning when to to stop and when to pick up the short row. Everyone should watch this video .
Excellent explanation in order to get the big picture of what you’re trying to accomplish! This was so helpful for me- knitting short rows in a sweater for the first time! Thank you so much! I could even imagine your diagram as I was knitting the short rows!
This is by FAR the most helpful video I have found on short rows. As an ambitious beginner I had no clue at all as to what a short row was, what it was used for and how it appears in a pattern. Up to this point I have avoided patterns that include short rows. Notice that includes most sweaters, tees and even shawls. After viewing this video and the how to do a German short row I think I am ready to give it a Go. It may takes many attempts but at least I can now try knowing what they are actually for. Many thanks to the fiber artist who made this super helpful video ♥️
You got one more subscriber...!!! BRAVO...!!! This is the most logical way to process short rows...!!! Instead of having beginner knitters, and old ones too for that matter, to scramble their brains building the back of their whatever knitting and calculating to no end... No more despair...!!! Now, I have something else that I want to point out and you can express it better than I can and show it to your followers... And it is the top down sweater front knitting, in much the same way, for those seniors or "young ones" with a beer=belly... Love you and do keep on knitting and posting...!!!
Can I just give you my heartfelt thanks?! I was so stumped by short rows - my pattern specified Japanese short rows til I learnt they could be interchangeable and I just could -not- wrap my head around them. Your instructions at the very beginning were my light bulb moment! I am saving this video for future reference! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing! Your row differences between the garter and regular, without short rows, is ingenious. Perhaps that will work with any stitch patterns with similar compression.
Thank you for this. I bought a pattern for a sweater and had never encountered short rows and it was heartbreaking for me since I couldn't figure out what I was doing. I don't want to let short rows scare me. This was very helpful. Thank you.
This is the video I have been looking for lol I am not intimidated by short rows per se, but I do want to understand how to know where they should be and how they should look when done properly. Thanks for this video!
Wow thanks I really understood a lot more from your handy diagrams! It gives me a visual rightaway so I can imagine what the demonstration of short rows really do. I've seen some short row demonstrations but didn't quite know why people use it, but this explains it really well, thanks!
I almost never comment on videos, but the I'm going through my first ever use of short rows and this was the only video that helped me understand. Was so close to giving up the project. Thank you so so much for such a clear explanation!
Thank you! Very nice informative video :) I would be helpful to have some more information on the amount of stitches that the short rows need to be spaced apart in different gauges and different places in the yoke.
Thank you so much for this well explained technic. I wanted to cry because of my lack of knowledge in this area, it will still tack me some time to digest and then put in practice but you have given me the understanding I didn't have.Thank you Susan 🌺🌼🌸🌻
Thanks for all you teach, on a top down sweater with reglan sleeve, where exactly do I need to begin the short row, would that be before I reach the sleeves section in the round more towards the front , appreciate a replay, Thank you,
I'm knitting a sweater for my granddaughter, its a circular yoke design. I want to add short rows under the color work section, before I split for the sleeves. I'm using DK weight yarn. I have my beginning of my round marker at the center back. I'm not sure how many stitches to knit on the RS before working my first wrap (german short row). Is there a % of the total stitches or since I split my back stitches with my BOR marker do I work half the back and then some of the sleeve stitches? and then how many stitches in between the short rows? You mentioned in your tutorial that the row gauge and weight of yarn will determine how many short rows to do. Thank you for your help
@Knitting With Frogginette I have the same question, plan to add short rows to the Love Note sweater. Not sure how many stitches to knit from centre back before starting short rows? Should 1st set of short rows only go across back of neck?
Could you do a video for a medium size jumper like the one you showed at the end of your video, the grey jumper with garter stitch in the front.. what a great idea. I'd also love it if you did a tutorial or knit along of a beginner-friendly cardigan. I'm subscribing.. thank you!
Thank you! What is the pattern for the blue gray child’s sweater you held up at the end? The one with garter stitch in front and stockinette in back? Thank you!!!!
How am I supposed to add short rows to a patterned sweater? If I keep making short rows + raglan increases, it will ruin the pattern. How can I fix that? Thank u in advance
I'm knitting a sweater right now with short rows in the neck line but also in the back just after separating body and sleeves. I'm following a pattern but I don't see the point of knitting this second set of short rows. Maybe you could explain it to me. Thanks in advance.
It could be several things, depending on where and how they are worked: Short rows can be used for create bust darts, add more length to either the front or the back to add room for tummy/breasts/butts so the sweater doesn't "ride up," they could also be worked to achieve a high-low hemline effect.
Thank you. Great tutorial. When knitting a raglan cardigan, are the sleeves stitches increased after the short rows are completed or are the increases incorporated with the short rows? Thanks again.
I have seen it done both ways. If the short rows are worked right under the neckline (in a top-down raglan) I personally much prefer it when they incorporate the raglan increases. When the short rows are worked at the bottom of the yoke, right before the sleeves/body separation I think it's less of an issue.
It's not very common, but I have knit a sweater (Ranunculus by Midori Hirose) that did that. Short rows can be used to achieve lots of different kinds of shaping so it is possible.
@@KnittingWithFrogginette Navelli by Caitlin Hunter calls for both front and back and that is what I am working on. It seems like a few others asked teh question and the answer is yes! Thank you for responding.
Thank you so much for this video explanation! I am a visual learner and loved your diagram. I also need to know the logic and overall why of a design before starting as the instructions don't make sense otherwise. I wish more people would teach this way!!!
I am right now knitting a sweater with short rows for the first time and I just wanna say thank you I now finally unterstand why there are short rows! It finally makes sense!
Hi ! I was wondering : when you begin your short rows, how do you know where you start ? I mean at what stich ? Is there a rule ? How many stitches are there between each short row ?
Omg thank you. I want to pay you for this video bc this is the way I want to learn to knit (big picture first) but it is so hard to find online. New subscriber!
I was knitting a cardigan and didn’t like the shaping (formed by short rows) on the back lower half of the sweater. I did exactly as you show, drew out the rows to understand how that shape could be altered. It came out perfectly. This really helps understand short rows. Thanks for sharing.
You are an excellent teacher, you explained detail and clearly with drawing picture, I watched so many videos about German short rows but I never can picture how it looked before I started even though with pattern. I like that you provided a little drawing with explaination of why ,how .I got confidence before I start because I know if I am doing right or wrong. Thank you so much and appreciated your show. ❤
Thank you so much! I was desperate! I didn't need the Short Rows for the neck but for the underarm and the instruction was quite confusing...I will try now and hopefully it will work out!
Please clarify what would be the difference between working (top down) short rows only on sleeves or only on the front or both on sleeves and the front? How will shape the neckline?
What I don't understand is, when purling do I make the raglan increases again? Or do I make the increases only on the right side of the work? Great video! ❤
I have been attempting to make a sweater with a raglan German Short rows and I’m determined to get this stitch pattern for my garment. I made up my mind to learn different techniques.
After watching your video I was able to incorporate short rows into a pattern where there weren’t any, and it was very successful. Thank you!
This is the best explanation I have found so far!
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful.
Often I see short rows mentioned and German short rows specifically but had no clue what they were or when they were used. You explained them perfectly. Bring on the short rows!
Oh that makes me so happy to read! They are really not hard but I think it does helps to understand their purpose.

Finally, I see how short rows work, and why they are necessary. One of my huge mysteries in knitting has been solved. Thank you!
This is exactly the explanation I was looking for. I had trouble visualizing how the short rows work. Thank you!

What a fun thought: using stockinette instead of short rows to increase length. I love that! Thanks for this!
Thank you for this video it explains short rows clearly - I was confused before but I’m not now . Many thanks x
This was exactly what I needed. The stitch architecture visuals make all the difference. Thank you!
