When I was beginning music history studies in college and listening to classical music, I received a copy of a CD sampler of Rubinstein’s recordings, “Selections from the Chopin Collection.” It was something of a hodgepodge, but it had both the C-sharp-minor and Minute waltzes played in that order. I had to get used to hearing the waltzes in the opposite order on recordings of the Opus 64 set. Either way, one follows the other seamlessly.
Love it! Since there are so many repeats of the sections, do you have different interpretation ideas for how to perform the different sections when repeated? Also, what are your thoughts on doing the trills as appoggiatura rather than on the beat? Keep up the good work!
Yes, I didn't get into variations of the repeats, but of course I do it if I play the whole piece. Usually, I take the B section not so fast the first time, and then faster when it returns. When the A section returns, I feel the urge to play it grander to start with, as a contrast to the pp B section, and then add more rubato than the first time. Just some thoughts, but also I might leave it open depending on the feeling of the day and the situation. It's one of the few pieces that I can actually enjoy that kind of freedom :) And the trill, yes the normal way to interpret it as written would be to do it before the beat, but somehow in this placement within the melody it feels natural to let it occupy the beat instead. But definately before the beat is also right. In some recordings it even feels like they do it somewhere in between (Barenboim, Rubinstein).

From the waltz du "petit chien "to the veiled and nor so veiled melancholic waves of the C sharp minor waltz and everything else in between you have approached, you would have ample tools for quite a palette of human mood variations . Well, I keep thinking that to myself too, but I haven't composed since some early tries in my youth. I figured I wanted to learn how to play the piano properly first before I'd try again, and I still haven't quite got there 😅
Btw, if I ever composed, I think I should not be the one to analyze it! I think there should be a healthy divide there, to keep some artistic stringency intact.

That hypermeter thing, I have seen Beethoven use that to great effect in his Scherzos. His 3/4 Scherzos like say, the Scherzo of the ninth symphony, often have a 2/4 hypermeter, in other words each group of 2 measures has one accented measure and one unaccented measure, and keeps following the characteristic 2/4 accent pattern.
Excellent analysis, as usual. Thank you! But, what I find very challenging in this piece is the use of pedal, especially during the first 4 sentences (according to you, thoughtful followed by playful parts). I would love to hear more about that. If possible, please post a short video on that.

Waltz in C# minor, like most of Chopin's music, is MORBID, beyond melancholy. I love it and have been playing it for 50 years.
