I currently have a coastal redwood growing in illinois,its already survived a winter on a unheated porch in a 7 gallon container with regular watering and is looking nice and healthy now that it is in the ground in an area where water settles when it rains
Bought 50 costal redwoods each only 45cm high off a man that was being put out of his home by his ex wife going to try and plant them on my property and in the local area
I found one 3 redwoods not sure on the exact type in Jajce, Bosnia. Climate there when i went was decently cold and like 400m elevation. Pre sturdy trees it seems. I ordered a couple kits from the US to plant in Rovinj, Croatia. Spreading them everywhere to give em the best chance of surviving. 😎👍
China also has another tree deciduous conifer called the Chinese Swamp Cypress, its related to the Bald Cypress in North America, also they have a tree that is a close relative of the North American Yellow Polar or Tuliptree, they have been separated by millions of years but still look alike and all the chinese trees are endangered, thats why we need to protect our trees in North America
Don't worry too much. We already went through our economic boom into a developed nation...we clear cut forests though out the east during this time. Today there are no driving forces for the USA to over harvest as most of E/SE Asia has been doing. Unfortunately, if we want to preserve nature & habits, poverty must be eliminated in the areas to be preserve. ❤👋
Yeah we got them all over Cincinnati. zyou see them. They stick out because they are such lush fine trees. But there use to be these here... They are in the fossil record.
You water a redwood it'll grow. I had almost 100% success with seeds from the General Grant cones. Flick out a seed, plant, water : tree. Thousands of them. 🕜 coastal redwood grew rings an inch across, in twenty years it was a monster. One day the Top broke off and pierced our roof. .. 😳
I heard they're not great at germinating but I bought a few from a guy that got his straight off a tree in his backyard and almost every single one sprouted. I screwed up though and rushed them too soon with fertilizer. I'm talking 80 sprouts in containers.. I'm still trying to figure out what works.
@@wheelmanstan we just put a seed in a tube and watered. Almost 100% success. After a year max they went into one gallon then 3 gallon within two years. We sold them, gave them planted them. But it matter not:: Everything Burned in The Creek Fire of 2020, some 600,000 acres. This was near Shaver Lake
They are not considered endangered as they are a non-native species, but they are rare since they’ve only been planted outside China for the past 80 years or so. Enjoy the tree at your new home!
I don't know if there is an official designation for dawn redwood but it is certainly endangered in the wild. A tree not native to North America can still be endangered. Interestingly, fossils of dawn redwood have been found in North America so it could be considered extinct in North America rather than non-native. It always makes me wonder why it's somehow noble to re-establish regionally extinct animals back into their former habitats but not plants and trees.
Dawn redwoods are beautiful trees and I love the history of them but they are not rare at all in North America. Once you know what to look for like this guy from the video he started finding them one after the other.

Biggest grove of costal redwoods outside USA is in Ireland proud to say I’m going to plant 50 of them
