Absolutely love this! I’m p insecure to be a sax player who knows so little about improv so this is a nice place to start. I had a lot of fun! I’m going to come back here time and time again :) as a note to my self and other saxophonists (if they need it) - for alto sax it’s in E major
This is so awesome dude! I did not know that I can play jazz with my soprano saxophone! It's like you are a musician helping other musicians discover new things from themselves! Thanks dude whoever you are! 😊
This is the perfect backing track, especially for guitar. All natural notes for the frets excelt for f# and all the chords are also beginner shapes. Any chromatics (wrong notes) flow seamlessly. Keep listening and playing and doing random intervals and trying to come up with phrases and you'll become a jazz pro in no time as long as you can play in more keys
How significant it is that this cat plays like this and isn't a jazz snob :) In the 70's a few guitarists in our jamming circle went off to Berklee School of Music, came back and wouldn't play anything we used to play....... we'd loved jamming on Robin Trower, Allman Brothers, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Dixie Dregs, Santana, Blue Oyster Cult, Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, etc., but the Berklee grads.....looking down their noses from their lofty places, if it wasn't in the key of H and jam-packed with (X)mmaj7b9b11b13aug+9sus2 chords, they don't even leave the house for less than $250........ now, since my birth in 1958, when my jazz bassist father was playing clubs in NYC, I'd grown up among world-class jazz players...... I've seen the spectrum of attitudes. Something that always boggled my mind was jazz players for whom jamming over a Latin vamp was so boring they'd take the chance to show the crowd how sophisticated their syncopation and modulation skills were, at times nearly causing train wrecks. So far out of pocket, so flashy, but don't care where the "1" is of the next measure. Pocket is all that matters, but to so many jazz players, it's all about proving how far "above" everyone else they are. I never listened to Grand Funk Railroad...... they were balked at. Only in recent years did I discover what a phenomenal amount of talent they have. SO...... in terms of "humble", this Quist cat is the epitome of it. "Humble" means not the newly displaced alpha dog baring his throat to the new alpha, but "teachable". If you listen to the breadth and depth of styles in his libraries, "teachable" is an understatement :)
this is a very relatable post. I always thought many virtuosos were fun y because the shit they played was just so ugly. People need to remember what music is
Been 10 months since my last entry........ I actually presumed my posts have a shelf life of a few days. Much to learn about this UA-cam realm....... I was reading under your "Show More" section that you can play G Major scale-based phrases, except over the E7 where you'd go for the A harmonic minor. What bogs me down about the idea, which I'm sure works like magic, is that very often there's not enough time over a certain chord to do such things. For example an A harmonic minor arpeggio over that E7..... but there's only 7 diatonic/12 chromatic notes to choose from. How to put enough in such a small time segment to make it worth it, unless of course it's with a run of 16ths or 32nds (???). Regardless, Quist, your standardized presentations under "Show More" carry immense weight, have helped in ways no others have or could!!! Big thanks!!! Be well, stay well, man.
I like to play along this backtrack very much, really relaxing. I just play funny notes and have fun (can't sound good though). When my neighbors ask me what was that I say - jazz. Now all my neighbors hate jazz.
Love the solo, hated the backing until the solo sold what could be musically done over it. Continued listening but now enjoying the form and changes more for how the soloist expressed himself on top of it
don't feel bad about your skill just know that if you keep practicing then you'll get better and sound like that cause im just learning but it gives me something to look forward too
Caro Jacob, inserire come intro un assoletto cinese fa pensare di essere più sensibili musicalmente quando si esegue un backing track così delicato. I play metal guitar primarily, and I've recently gained interest in jazz guitar. I like playing over tracks line this to work on different kinds of phrasing. I was actually alternating between D minor and D Harmonic Minor over this, adding some whole-tone and diminished stuff in between. The in between didn't sound that great, but the rest sounded pretty cool over this. Thanks for the track!

Well, I surprised mahself! Yes I did. I clicked on this on a whim, and the next thing I knew I was jammin all jazzy. Yeahya! Now I'm sittin here thinking that maybe, because of the pace of it, playing along with jazz might be a really good way for me to learn scales. I mean, just playing a scale over and over again can get boring real quick. Having something like this to play along with sounds like fun. I'm glad I clicked on the link! Gonna see what else you offer. Thanks!
Not sure why but it sounds more like the a minor is home. Probably because that 5 to 1 motion but the d is also resolving down a 5th to g. Does anyone know why a feels like home?
Quist-interesting that I can hum a riff a moment before I play it and it's pretty jazzy. And I've only played rock and some classical - forever. The other interesting thing is it's very easy to play very complicated things with a lot of 'chromaticism,' as it's easier to remember hard things - than easy things! At least for me. My lifelong problem is I cannot - cannot - remember what I play. Too bad or I'd be a jazz guitarist. Oh, well. Thanks for this.
