As a kid on the El Capitan i recall going through Joliet and the cendors boarding the train to sell snacks and beverages. Greetings from Port Saint Lucie Florida.
Nice video of Joliet as it is today . Real busy rail thrufare yet today. My uncle lived in joliet and operated a nyc passenger train from joliet to niles michigan in the 50’s and 60’s before Amtrak. He lived by a busy rail yard is all I remember as I was still a kid back then !! 👍
The rock island line past the bridge is still very much used? That bridge is very operational... IAIS railroad and CSX use that line in the afternoon and evening hours and sees about 5-6 mainline trains during the night hours.
Why did the modern North American Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad long sturdy diesel electric freight trains thunder by the Joliet Slammers baseball stadium park?
I'm impressed that you took the time to capture good audio and sync it with drone video. Really adds a lot to the video. I was born and raised in Joliet and now I do video work in Los Angeles. You've inspired me to shoot bring my drone next time I visit my hometown.
Remarkably well done, especially by your nine-year old son John's ground photography. He proves well made videos can be done by even the youngest. Nice combination with drone technology. My late cousin Morris Berlinsky was Joliet Mayor from 1965-78!
There used to be a glass brick ceiling on the downstairs area. Upstairs, it was the corner between n-s, e-w tracks. Most walked over it, but never noticed. Joliet's motto is.... Crossroads of America I do believe.
Bit of a late reply, but I've been railfanning joliet for over a decade now and the old union station platform is still open, as well as the amtrak platform in the middle there where you see the amtrak trains stop. If you Google "joliet railfanning" you'll find plenty of videos shot from the gated, now not in use platform as well as the amtrak station.
I wish they still use that bridge and over the summer i saw the bridge went down then i was thinking what going on but I'm only 12 tho lol i saw a CSX on that line over the summer
Can anyone tell me where the loading on and off points are for these trains of flat car after flat car of semi trailers as we saw with the first BNSF train? Is it done at a shipping container yard seeing as that's what containers are usually then transported to their final destination on is a highway container flat bed, this is my guess but then that makes me wonder where it was done before in the first generation of highway truck to train back to highway truck in the days before container shipping came to prominence with all of these large container train yards?
Santa had an intermodal yard a bit west of Union Station along I55 but now most of the intermodal is handled in a former yard off the Tristate Tollway that was converted from a small yard to a major intermodal facility to handle a major UPS hub next to the yard.
Wikipedia has an entry about the first container port in New York/New Jersey in 1962 . Universally sized containers were off-loaded onto specially designed trucks for final delivery. Trains got involved later.
It's not quite that simple. Fruehauf and the New York Central Railroad developed a container system that won out over several other systems being developed in the early-mid '50's.: www.singingwheels.com/who-really-invented-the-shipping-container.html
Mostly abandoned industrial area south and west of Joliet Union Station, along the Des Plaines River. The parking lot you see belongs to the Hollywood Casino. There are a couple of industries left on that spur, but south of a plant between the ex-Rock Island and U.S. 6, the tracks haven't seen a train in decades.
There is an old big round building that can be seen in the railyards by woodruff avenue but you have to be in the old silver cross hospital to see it.I've been told that building rotated to accommodate the trains
Wow, good video. Good sky view. I did not know that was over in that area. How far is the rang of your drone? You went very far away from the starting area.
Can we get that Sergeant, on M A S H, who lives in Joliet, to please pick me up some ribs, coleslaw and BBQ sauce from Adams Ribs, just across the street from Dearborn Terminal? Thanks ?
You do know, that once you flew your drone west pave and past Chicago Avenue to Rock Island (CSX/IAIS) bridge, you were in a control air space? Your flight past Chicago Ave was within a 5 mile radius of Joliet Regional Airport. Fly responsibly by the rules.

Very well done! Loved it!

It is very neat to watch a baseball game, "Joliet Slammers" in the summer and having the trains run right by next to the stadium.
Why did the modern North American Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad long sturdy diesel electric freight trains thunder by the Joliet Slammers baseball stadium park?
long on trains, short on history

Green 🐸 videos-,1955-1985... Emory gulash and Crew most picturesque videos of non stop trains at Joliet 👍👍
Ive been trying to get this video to load for over an hour. all i get is the loading circle in the middle of the screen.
You should do one over the old GM&O yard off Patterson Ave
Just moved to the area. Where can one watch the trains safely in downtown Joliet now that the station is closed.? Thanks

Spectacular job filming!! Keep up the great work.
The glory days where the Rock Island trains crossed the diamond will very much be missed.
I wish they still use that bridge and over the summer i saw the bridge went down then i was thinking what going on but I'm only 12 tho lol i saw a CSX on that line over the summer
That bridge is actually used all the time by Iowa Interstate and at times CSX. Though Metra trains don't and never have used that bridge.
And now it's not regular which is just sad.
Where is 12:49 located?
YES...WHERE IS THIS OLD YARD?
Great video and Great drone footage. What kind of drone did you use?
laptop
Nice to see it in real life.

Nice vídeo amigo.
Where do you catch Amtrak, the "Texas eagle" train?
Bradley W there are Amtrak platforms along the track on the route. We watched trains there on two occasions, and the new platforms are not bad.
What History?
what was the open land at 12:35?

I believe the concrete pad was from the old Caterpillar Tractor Factory.
It was part of the old Caterpillar company. We tore those tracks out last year and it is now a FedEx hub.
Is that the new FedEx facility that's off route 6 between Larkin and Houbolt?
Nice video. Union station was constructed in 1911-1912, not 1903.
Awesome documentary of the City that I was born in! I love to railfan here!

Well shot, but misleadingly titled
Man not much cover on the new platform!
There's heat lamps. It's miserable in wintertime.
@@MeoCulpa Is that station fully closed to the public now?
Two colors of ballast!
blast of volume at 6.45

the entire video was within the 5 mile call zone.
KO / Joliet regional airport is heading more west that's in downtown idiot
Pedro Santana Just because the airport is more West doesn't mean that there can't be a controlled airspace there.
KJOT is an uncontrolled airport.
Amtrak ruined everything.
