Yay, it's a Friday Trader Joe's haul with Katie! Glad you're feeling better 💛
I would love to see some of the recipes you make with all this yummy stuff from Aldi and Trader Joe's!!
1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water for jasmine rice! Boil water first then add washed rice cook on low with lid for 15 min
Rice - try this: rinse the rice in a colander and couple of times. Boil a pot of water, you don’t have to measure but make it enough water for the rice to move around in the pot. BOIL for 5 minutes - DRAIN - Put a little fat in the bottom of the pan, enough to cover the whole bottom, you can use anything you like, butter, oil, whatever. Add the rice, cover the pot with a towel then put on the lid (bring the towel up over the sides of lid) cook on medium low for 20mins. Done! If you do it right you will get a crispy layer on the bottom that’s my fav part. Sounds complicated. Sounds like it’s a lot of steps, but it’s really very quick. Very easy. Give it a try. Let me know how it works for you.
Sounds very complicated just to make rice😀
Not measuring sounds a lot like mushy rice 🥴
@@lenajazuk4231 not complicated at all. That’s how they make rice in India and Pakistan.
@@tzb2019 it’s not mushy at all, every grain is separate. The rice is only in the water for 5 minutes. The rest of the cooking is done by steaming the rice in the residual moisture that remains after the rice is drained.
@@irener1111 okay after reading thru the directions a couple times it makes sense now and I might have to try it
I bought 2 bags of the honeycomb candy. I should have bought more. So yummy!
When boiling the water add about 2-3 Tablespons butter before adding the rice. Makes the rice moist and delicious.
Would love to see how you make your vegetarian shepherds pie!
after rinsing the rise use enough water when you measure as follows;: before turning it on, pour in rinsed and drained rice into rice maker and add water up to your first knuckle when you place your pointer finger, in the pot. It is enough.
I agree, i buy the jasmine from TJ's.
Thank you for doing these vlogs. Hope that Tim finds a great job soon.
I love basmati rice, it's my absolute favorite. The way I learned to cook rice thanks to my uncle is very simple. All you do is get a cup of rice, put it in a pot, and add enough water to reach your first knuckle/finger line, put on stove on medium-high and soon as it starts to boil turn it to the lowest setting and once the bubbles stop cover it with a lid. If you feel uncomfortable with how much the rice is bubbling, cover it with a lid and remove it from the hot burner and once the burner has cooled down to the low setting, replace the pot of rice. At some point it'll look like the rice is done or close to done, that's when you turn the burner off completely and just let the rice sit for a bit longer but under no circumstances do you stir it. Stirring rice causes it to get sticky. Then, when you're ready, fluff it with a fork and serve.
I hope this helps.
Rice makers never fail and they are not very expensive. Glad your feeling better.
I haven’t gotten that ciabatta bread in years, thanks for reminding me about it! Love it for turkey sandwiches! ❤
I'm 100% thrilled they got the Honeycomb candy back just wish it was still dark chocolate. (It used to be called sponge candy.)
I am so glad you will still be doing reviews. I was worried!
I’m glad you’re feeling a little better! Take care and I hope your hubby gets a great job soon.
I boil the potatoes the day before. The next day, I put them in the microwave to get the chill out, then prepare them for smashing. It’s saves lots of time!!
Oh dried raspberries have to be outstanding. I adore the dried strawberries. I just wish they were a little more affordable because I eat the whole bag in one sitting.
I agree with you on the dried strawberries. They're delicious!
I dont even rinse it and my rice is perfect according to people from Afghanistan and they do sooo good rice... I have double amount of water to rice always basmati... and a little bit of oil and salt.. Let it boil on low to medium heat until the water is almost gone.. than turn of the stove and let it sit for a while with a towel under the lid.. when the water is all gone fluff it a bit with a fork
Embrace the sticky rice!
Hi Katie, I highly recommend a rice cooker. It makes rice perfectly and you can use it for so many different recipes.
I look forward to your videos. I was actually worried when you disappeared! Glad you are healing
The recipe is easy, Katie 1 cup rice to two parts water bring to a boil, then turn the fire down to shimmer cook for a approximately 20 minutes don’t stir it don’t rinse it before cooking that’s it
My MIL toasts the rice lightly in the oven before cooking so that the grains separate
Welcome, officially back. Those honeycomb candies looks really good, it kind of reminds me of a another candy out there, texture wise like a Butterfinger. It should be interesting.
When rice is frozen it changes its structure giving it more resistant starches...
Glad you feel better!
Rice becomes sticky when you cook it too long. Try reducing the cook time. I usually cook my rice for no more than 15 minutes.
I bought the honeycomb candy yesterday and was interested for you to try it. It’s candy of my childhood, though we called it sponge candy
Yes!! Can you share the twice baked potato recipe from your mom?
Thanks Katie for doing another haul. Glad you are feeling better.
Omg they have freeze dried raspberries now!! I literally JUST needed these for a chocolate raspberry cake I made for my dad for his birthday at the beginning of the month! You turn the raspberries into a powder to flavor + color the frosting 🥰 it was such a good recipe from a blog called Blue Bowl (if you need to make any cakes soon!). I had to go on a hunt so I’m glad Trader Joe’s carries these now!
Katie, so glad you're on the mend. See you tomorrow.
Have you tried cooking your rice in the instant pot? Rinse the rice, measure 1 cup water to one cup rice, a teaspoon or two of butter or olive oil, high pressure for 10 minutes, let it rest for 10 minutes and then release the pressure. Perfect every time.
So glad that you are feeling better!! I just went to T.J.s today. I wish I thought of getting the pretzel thins. They would go so well with the hummus with the chili onion. Yum! Good tip on the lettuce. I might get the whole Rommaine next time.
Would love to see the shepherds pie recipe!
I am looking forward to you trying to shelf stable garlic/parm bread. I love bread!!!♥🥖
Fresh cooked rice is never going to have the same texture as frozen, reheated rice. Just make your rice ahead of time, spread it out on a baking sheet to cool, and freeze in the portion size you want. When you reheat it it should have the same texture as the frozen you buy.
So happy you're feeling better Katie. Lots of great items, I feel I need to restock too. I'm excited for the freeze dried raspberries and the honeycomb candy 🤗
Katie! So happy to hear you are feeling better and are back! Hope everything was worked out. Health is so important!
I make a ton of Mediterranean style salads! Your recipe sounds great! I would suggest adding some crisp lettuce, (olives for you, not Tim lol), some feta cheese, and a splash of red wine vinegar. Trust me, Katie, that is a game changer. And when you are at an international grocery store (you can even find it at Ralphs), buy some sumac spice seasoning and add a sprinkle to your salad! All Mediterranean recipes use it, and it has good health benefits too!
And some days if I know I need a little something extra to pull me over, I’ll put it in a pita wrap and eat it like a tortilla, or use pita chips as a vessel to eat it lol.
Much love!! 🤗 @katiehespe
1 cup rice to 2 cups liquid bring to boil for 10 minutes put cover on n shut burner off I also add a little bit of olive oil in rice before water n stir around n don’t stir your rice while cooking it mkes it sticky
No I never stir it. I use a fork to fluff when it’s done cooking.
@@KatieHespe Have you tried sauteeing the rice in butter or oil to coat the rice grains first? That is supposed to keep the rice from sticking.
Add less water to your rice and it will be less sticky.
Rice: add 1 TB of oil or butter to the water.
Add a little cap of vinegar to rice and never sticks for me
Get a soda stream machine and watermelon flavor drops and have it all year
I make meringue kisses with freeze dried raspberries. Put them in a food processor with the sugar and put through a fine sieve to get rid of the seeds before combining with the egg whites. So good, especially if you drizzle them with dark chocolate!
Wow sounds incredible!
Welcome back, Katie. Glad you’re feeling better!
I believe the bag instructions tell you 2 cups water to 1 cup rice like other types of rice. But with jasmine rice, best ratio is 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water. I add a tablespoon of butter and EVOO each to pan. Add in chopped onion and cook for a few minutes. Add in 2 cups rinsed rice and 3 cups of water or even better bone broth along with a tablespoon of chicken bullion powder and stir. Bring to a boil. Lower flame to simmer. Cover and cook 15 minutes. Turn off flame but don’t uncover. Leave covered for 15 minutes. Then uncover and it’s perfect.
You are absolutely on the mark. For basmati rice it is even one to one if you wash it first. A splash of lemon juice, a pinch of smoked salt, and a nub of fermented butter make it perfect. The best way to cook basmati rice is in a heavy pot. Set up your rice (1:1, splash of lemon, pinch of salt, nub of butter), bring to a rolling boil, put lid on pot, turn off heat, and after ten minutes it is usually done and can be fluffed.
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Yes, so helpful. I usually make sticky rice, but good to have these tips for Jasmine and Basmati!
Love your channel, I'm glad you're feeling better. I'm a music lover, what's the name of the song in your intro. 😊 Thanks
Thanks ! Looking forward to the taste test!
That rice is sticky rice like the kind they put in sushi.
I'm interested in the honeycomb chocolate candy!
After you boil, cool and smash your little potatoes, spray with olive or avocado oil and add seasonings if choice then pop in air fryer at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. Faster. Crunchy. Delic!
The freeze dried raspberries are great as a natural food coloring for frosting, and if added to puréed fresh raspberries make the sauce even more rasberrish (great for ice cream
I can't wait to go back for the Watermelon sparkling drinks and the honeycomb candy! Honeycomb is so good!
I love my bread too. I get my bread from Aldi's. They have keto bread. It's very good. They also carry in Italian keto bread too. Also very good.
Thanks 😊
Add quinoa or couscous to the salad! It bulks it up, and makes it more of an actual meal!
I bet your two would like the Nothing but Sweet Potato dog treats. My beagle does! I can't seem to find the To the Power of Seven Red juice anymore in various San Diego TJ's stores, though they have the other three. It must be popular.
The way I look at pre-cut salads is that they are convenient and so I am more likely to actually eat them everyday. If something is not convenient I may not end up eating a salad everyday.
Yes! I completely agree and feel the same way.
New to your channel and to shopping at Trader Joe's, but so far I am in love with both! I tried the Organic Freeze-Dried Berry Medley last week as an add in to the Blueberries & Cream Yogurt as well as the Vanilla flavor as well and Wow! It was a super treat! I would suggest anyone to try their yogurt - I wasn't a fan, and now I crave it every night, and morning! You give us such great ideals and meals to plan, Thank you!
Would love a video if the twice baked potatoes recipe!! Glad you are feeling better.
For the smashed potatoes, I nuke about 10+ of them for 5 minutes, smash them, then add olive oil, salt and pepper and finally air fry for about 5 minutes or until they’re crispy.
I really enjoy raspberries, just put that on the list. Funny you talked about making bread. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to make sour dough bread, no yeast involved. ( thank goodness) I will be looking forward to the taste test. I’m excited to see your recipes when you feel better 😊
Great haul as always. Quick question do you know when the Lucy Glow apples will be back in season?
Use a rice cooker
It makes it perfect
I bought the Spanish rice on your recommendation a year ago and it looked so bland, I just kept putting off trying it. Well, I finally gave it a try last week and you are so right, it's really good. I added frozen peas to it.
Like you I also struggled with rice... I soak and rinse rinse rinse, than teaspoon of oil and toast then (about 5 mins, pay attention closely) add water and cook as directions say. Perfect now every time.
Great tip!
Here me out rinse it only once and if that doesn’t work toast the rice a little before adding water pls pls give it a try its gonna work
Naan is really easy and quick to make at home!
I have the same issue with rice. I use the instant pot but it always is sticky like what you would get at a Chinese restaurant. I
When I use my rice cooker it I keep it in the warming mode for 30 minutes after timer goes off and it seems to get rid of the extra moisture for me.
Great tip!
Cook your rice like pasta. It is perfect every time.
If its sticky thats weird unless its too much water. For the rice. I usually wash mine 5-6x and then measure water by finger from the top surface of the rice. I use my index finger and stop in the middle line of my finger. If i want more soft then i put it a little over the 2nd line. Hope that helps :)
I will have to try the finger trick! I measure exactly how it states in the bag but I’m beginning to think it may be too much water.
@@KatieHespe yes try the finger trick. Make sure the rice is all flat and packed in so press it down and make sure its flat all around. Then put the tip of your index finger on top and pour water until u hit the 2nd line in the middle of your finger. If u like your rice more soft then put a little bit above the line but usually the middle like works great. There’s 3 lines on my index finger in the middle and i usually fill mine to the third line. Hope that helps :)
I love watching you and I also like stick rice lol
Waiting for taste! See you soon!
I suck at rice. I even tried to cook it in an instant pot and it still didnt come out right so I gave up. I’m surprised you didn’t get the lemon pasta, I was at Tj’s today and bought 4 boxes because I missed them last year.
hm, not sure, I love my rice cooker, but i think jasmine rice though is sticky in character so maybe get a different rice? Sorry I dont make rice anymore at home. put cheese on your patatoes if you can! that´s how i do it, and its great
In my nutrition class we were told that the more you do to vegetables and fruit the more nutrients are lost., but prepared salad are a great convenience and it's not like it's going to hurt you. Enjoy your salads, Katie.
Thanks for sharing, that’s totally makes sense.
Am not sure you saw my comment last week.... POWAY IS GETTING A TRADER JOES! YAYYYYY! 😀
Love it!!
Great haul. Would your mom be willing to share her twice baked potato recipe?
I make the same Mediterranean salad and add trader joe garbanzo beans
Please share your Mediterranean salad recipe!
Consider the source of the articles you read. I'm not saying it's all false, but information from reputable, well-known sources is probably more reliable than a random article. Like you said, all the information can make us question everything we do.
I agree with you. The cut lettuce does make sense though. Of course once the molecular structure is damaged it will go bad much faster and I think it will lose nutrients in the process.
Have you tried sautéing it in a little ghee or avocado oil before cooking?
No not ghee but I have tried olive oil and butter.
A pat of butter in rice
I always do that 😊
Are u putting cold water in the rice when u cook it?
Yes always cold water
Great haul and I'm so glad you're back!
I would love to see how you make your shepherd's pie recipe! Shepherd's pie was the very first recipe I ever made. I'm curious about what you use as a meat substitute.
In terms of the taste test, I'm looking forward to that spotlight cheese.
🌸👍🏻🌸
Talk to me sister!
Not eating processd foods isn't going to prevent you from catching the flu so I wouldn't stress out so much about it.
🤔🤔🤔
Ya unfortunately the flu came after a medical procedure I had. I was instructed by my doctor to avoid processed foods which will prevent surgery in the future.
