- Montgomery College Student Grace Jo discusses her childhood and defection from North Korea with MC Professor Emily Rosado.
Montgomery College is a public, multicampus community college in Montgomery County, Maryland. Montgomery College serves nearly 60,000 students a year, through both credit and noncredit programs, in more than 100 areas of study.
I know this video is several years old, but in case she can see this comment, I just wanted to thank Grace Jo for sharing her story. We're so lucky to have you here in America.
Im always amazed and impressed by the north korean defectors I've seen interviewed. Smart, dignified and really understand what freedom means. More than most of us born with it.
Did you think she’d be a savage or something?
@@joejackson9986 north koreans are not allowed to know or see anything from outside north korea plus they are so poor of a country some actually eat feces so I can understand their point.
Ture, because freedom is like oxygen. When you live around them, you will never feel how important it is until the day you almost lose it.
They are likely better educated than 90% of what comes out of America's inner city public schools.
@@slocumb1270 some of North Korean even speak better English than some Americans I have crossed paths with.
this got me very emotional. I came to US as a teenager for college. It took 10 years to legally get my citizenship. Somehow i was classified as a refugee because i was born in China. Although i have never starved one day in my life, I identified with this girl's extremely dangerous journey realizing i am just a fake refugee. She is the real thing with nerves of steel. I am so happy that she and her mother are now safe and enjoying freedom in the US.
It was very unfortunate of her & family to be living like back & forth between North Korea & China with all those hardships, sufferings, emotional pains, agony & trauma in the hands of those very inhuman form of government they have then & up to this time. Something is so wrong in their ideologies, culture, tradition & beliefs & it will pass on from one generation to another which can also be detrimental to the safety, peace & normal lives of their neighboring societies. Many are called but only few are chosen & this woman is one of them. She's God's instrument to spread out her passion in missionary work despite the difficult life she's been through. I can feel that deep inside her lives but only God's wisdom & unmeasurable strength. I'm pretty sure that when all her great missions on earth are done, she'll be rejoined with our Lord in the "kingdom of heaven where there's only love, peace & happiness no end."

You’re not fake 💞 just because someone has had it worse does not mean that your suffering is invalid. I’m happy you are here in the US.
I moved to America when I was 24. Her story doesn't make your suffering any less painful. I salute the courage of the likes of you. GOD Bless you and GOD Bless America.
I’m so highly impressed with this young lady. Her perseverance and hope is so strong it seems contagious.
Yes yes yes
Really after ten years.
Her English is impeccable for a N.Korean. She is strong & smart!

Her brave story of injustice brings tears and I am thankful that she and her family are safe here in America.
This is truly heartbreaking. So many things we take for granted for simply being born an American citizen.
This makes me feel so bad just thinking that in 1996 i was running around my front yard, eating popsicles, and crying over bee stings. Meanwhile she was barely able to eat and surrounded by people dying.
When she was talking about how easy it is for N Korean little girls to end up in trafficking rings and she said not all N Korean girls would be "lucky" like she was- I felt a sudden wave of shame for taking my typical American life so for granted.
NEVER feel bad or guilty about living in a free country.
@@tyrantrex734 It's called "empathy." You should try it.
@@poutinedream5066 I empathize, but I will never feel bad or guilty having lived my life in a free country.
I am grateful to the Christians in China and the American missionaries without whom the rescue could not have happened. It's wonderful how she is not just forgetting but reaching out to help others through what she has learned.
Thank you for sharing your empathy & compassion for helping others through your difficult life experience. I admire your courage and kindness.
Have you found your oldest sister?do you have any thoughts about what happened to her?
I am really blown away from what she had to say about the life in North Korea, I really admire her strength and courage for sharing this with all of us. I also want to say (if she's reading this) she has my respect!!!
Really great sit down with Grace. Thank you for sharing.
Her English is truly amazing ❤️ what a strong family & incredible story.
Report your neighbor is the most awful thing any government can ask
Same thing the democratic governors are asking us to do about social distanceing
Report your mom and dad (USSR/DDR)
Yes our mayor and governor of California is asking to report and then the reporter will get a reward. Soviet Union started this tactic and taught it to Mao. It is a form of mental abuse on its citizens
allison that is really bad.
Imagine equating enforcing social distancing the same as soviet russia. -_-
So proud of the work you do Grace. And it's awesome to know that you're in my beautiful state, Maryland.
Thank you for sharing your story.
She’s awesome. Kudos to her and her mom and sister.

Her English are excellent, she is a very determine and a very strong young lady.
Very impressive young lady.
I wish nothing but the best for her and the brightest future.
The struggle of human determination....amazing family !
Damn she is strong 💪. If this was 1 of us there b all kinds of tears SMH she been thru a lot
You are an amazing lady Grace thank you so much for sharing your story ..
She's a God sent angel who will inspire to tackle life no matter how unbearable it is in a very Godly manner.
She so beutiful 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 God bless her and her family ... she went thru something most coulda never bare or survive
Glad Grace Jo told her story, but I got emotional, most of her family basically starved or got executed
Wow such strength and Courage
So many people from this area and culture are so appealing. Mild mannered and patient people like her are very refreshing. The more of them we have, like her, the better off we will all be.
Korea or the North particularly?
@@xp_studios7804 I was thinking of the entire area including Japan. I know a number of Asian people who happen to be, as I said, very mild mannered and patient. I guess those I have known were all well educated which I hope did not give me an unrealistic picture. I also know a family who adopted two Korean babies, about 15 years ago, and both have that same refreshing quiet and mild spirit that has disappeared from other cultures.
Very powerful testimony!
What contact info for ur rescue mission?
Unbelievable. Wow!

Great interview. I was shocked 😲 to hear 👂 her story. I'm sure she will be very happy in America 🇺🇸.
How amazing you speak fluent english, god bless.
Her English is wonderful...
What happened to her older sister and brothers that is such a sad story if they did this to their own ppl I can't imagine what happened to poor otto warmbier
otto not too bright.. to go into dictators country from a country that dictator hates and disrespect him.. every square inch of those hotels under surveillance and bugged. the tour group that brought him there bears some responsibility too for not doing a pre tour safety training.
I guessing she moved to Annandale, VA. When I lived there, there was a Korean population and it was growing.
whats the name of her non profit organization
She was born in September. Wow she speak Chinese Korean English.
wow you guys do a fantastic hour interview and don't even plug her in. that's so messed up lol. How do we get a hold of their organization?
She is calm and pretty God bless her!!.
This is an angel this girl is better than the angels that's what I think about when I see her she's more perfect than all the angels in heaven
Emily is a sweet Professor
What happened to the remaining son whom she described as being still in the household when her mom made her decision to leave after the grandmother died? And, how did her other brothers die, starvation?
God bless you sweetheart you are very beautiful inside and out and my heart and prayers go out to you and we think we have it hard
Its all because of our God.. God is really great
Just a tragic story about the mother. I don't know how the daughter managed to stay emotionless
Brave young lady I wish her happiness
She said they had no food and her parents were arrested and her mom was let go after finding out that she was pregnant so going through all that pain suffering and starvation she found herself hot and bothered and horny enough to have sex and that bothers me cuz if you're dealing with all these problems and not having no food why would you get pregnant? Why bring children into the world to have them suffer? That's selfish
What an intelligent and beautiful lady - inside and out.
I greatly admire her, but considering the length of this video, it wasn't very interesting compared to other defectors. I would've ask more questions about escaping, how she felt and what she saw, the differences she saw in China and the USA, and why the hell she went to Alaska!
AMAZING STORY & JOURNEY, WELCOME TO AMERICA.
:( This was a very detailed reason why we need to help the North Korean people.

Welcome here in USA
Grace Jo, what a beautiful name to a beautiful woman.
Nice to see a genuine smile on a beautiful north Korean girl
Many North Korean escape and yet Kim didn't realize how bad 😂 😂😂 his people being treated .he never think that he is in the same situations huh
Oh he knows
Her hair is epic!
Why would China, supposedly an ally of North Korea, all this terrible famine. I don't get it.
Great Story , Howver , she has clearly English accent mostly Chinese have . I am sure she just have grw up in china. Or she perhaps one of those Chinese koreans living in the north east of china. I live and work in China and I am quite familiar with this accent . It is indeed a sad story but I doubt if she has lived in Korea because her english no where close to north or south Koreans.

I dont like that the interviewer was emotional. Interviewers should separate their emotion from the stories they are told.
I believe the interviewer is just a teacher at the college, not a professional talking head. She probably heard about this Korean girl on campus and decided to interview her. Of course, I'm just speculating.
If everyone in the world knows about North Korea and how they treat everyone there... why do they keep lying.. my prayers goes out to the people of North Korea may the Lord one day deliver them from
Pharaoh... everything is possible in Jesus name
Your prayers do nothing to help people. Perhaps you should vote for representatives that would do things to help those people

Her neighbor was a Karen who was hating they had food from China
It's not easy to find a match heart donor to kill..it would take a while to find one….Saying that he's alive and well , a hoard of hired cheering Nkoreans should have been seen ready for a welcome home party in Pyonyang.
Heartbreaking. But there are many stories, because THIS is life when socialism runs full course. When there’s a dictator, never EVER has it ever turned out well.
That's not socialism. It's just a brutal dictatorship.
So many decades of unnecessary suffering...
I hope one day North and South will be united....but greedies of power is really difficult.....now Kim Jung Un has passed awsy hopefully there will be abundancy and peace soon.
June Liad ummmm Kim Jong Un is still alive and unfortunately the country would still continue to be a communist nation, regardless of the death of one guy.
@@thomasconnolly9033 tooo bad.....I wish them Peace and FREEDOM......
June Liad he is alive and very well.
And some westerners cant stop complaining about life here, Unbelievable!
Why is everyone so skeptical of her
Her last wish was to eat 1 baked potato! Man, that is heavyweight! My goodness!
Both these ladies were in tears :-( such pain to endure to make one family in power is curse on humanity... Where is God??
Kim think that North Korea is belong to him alone ya hahaha
I have to blame South Korean government as in they never introduce schemes or ways to integrate North Korean defectors into South Korean society this causes them to develope stockholm syndrome causing them to return back to the very same hell they escaped , financial support should be provided to them
I'm actually very thankful South Korea take care of North Koreans. Sure, society isn't very nice to them... but you can't force people to think a certain way. Plus, it could be worse. South Korea could one day have an agreement to send defectors back to the North (just like China.) Imagine that scenario! Where are they supposed to go?
South Korea does provide North Koreans with financial support. They used to give them one lump sum payment of about $20,000 to $30,000, but North Koreans were frequently getting scammed out of all their money. So now they give them small payments over a couple of years or so. I think it's quite generous, to be honest. They don't need to do anything.
My only concern is that as generations go on, South Koreans are going to have no relatives alive who have family in the North. If that happens then it may be politically difficult to continue to spend tax payer money helping North Koreans. Let's hope they continue to do the right thing!
No way once gets 2 chances to escape nk. Most. Don’t get 1
Why u never plant vegetables fruit bearing
Sorry did she imply her siblings died of starvation? 😣
By Allah swt grace we will have freedom in North Korea alhamdulilah it's granted divine victory for the opressed the messenger Muhammad was a oppressed who talk to slaves about God.

The “Kim Family” is truly horrible. My earnest prayer is that they meet the same fate they have brought to their people! This is horrible!
Once China becomes democracy, North Korea will also become free
No will not China fear north because Kim place his nuke direct at three gorgeous dam
Parents were starving but still had the strentght to make babies?
It happens a lot in severely malnourished African countries with extremely high infant morality rates. Probably a result of ignorance & stupidity.
this is so terribly sad. these people are true warriors. my heart hurts so bad knowing these things happen. so painful. life in the usa is taken for granted. moms are so amazing. life is such a blessing, and for some a curse. ive got so many terrible thoughts going through my mind about that regime. the usa, uk, any nations with the means and will, come together, and wipe kim family regime and the rest of the n korean govt OUT of this world. free those people.
Vote Republican or this is the fate of the US
Ted Langston .. yes but not no trump .. forget that his all lies
There's no evidence that the dems want this, I don't even like them but this is flat out ignorant of what north Koreans face
Republicans are only a few years behind the Democratic Party on most issues. Either party will result in hellish conditions.
