SEVEN SIMPLE TIPS TO HELP YOU DEVELOP YOUR DAILY DRAWING HABIT. 1:56 Keep your workspace and tools ready 2:37 Draw at the same time every day 3:40 Make use of small pockets of time 4:37 Carry a portable sketchbook 5:19 Set a time to brainstorm, plan & create 6:33. Create a schedule 8:28 Set aside days for "rote" activities (it's therapeutic!) We gotta do it in order for it to happen. Thanks, Al!!
6:03 "that's why I have ideas for tutorials from now to forever" I think all of us here are utterly happy about that statement :), Thanks for another great video Mr. Dunn :)
Thank you very much, I've challenged myself to fill up an entire sketchbook of 98 pages, 1 drawing per day, so I'm on day 21 enjoying myself with this challenge.
Eloquent and concise are words not often used to describe one speaker, but you're right. He gives enough poetry to be inspiring but also cuts to the point at the same time. Not easy.
Excellent list! My rote activities are watercolor swatching/making color charts and practicing mark making with various brushes, as well as creating simple geometric shapes in pencil and practicing continuous tone in graphite. Some may consider this boring, but I find it pretty peaceful and a good way to keep the habit of daily creativity going. A lot of times in just doing those activities I'll accidentally begin something that turns into a great painting or drawing :) I think that this is similar to what Tim Gula shared on Proko's channel about intuitive drawing. Very essential for creative breakthroughs!
Thank you Mr Dunn. In a difficult and busy moment when you see no possibility to express through pen and paper, your words are really a light in the dark. Thank you!
This is such a great video. As a guy who works out frequently, your tip about setting days for specific things made a lot of sense to me (i.e. a sketching day compared to a leg day, etc.). I'll have to give something like that a shot! Thank you so much for this. Having videos like this on while I do my own sketching is very therapeutic! Keep up the great work!:D
I can't agree with you guys more. In fact, I usually work out in the evenings, and when I'm done and refueled I sit down to my desk to work on my art. It's such great advice to set a time each day devoted to working on your art. It's motivating, it gets your brain thinking of ideas more often so you have something to look forward to when you sit down. It also gives you time to yourself to make sure your creativity is getting the outlet it needs. Another great video! Thanks so much!
This is the, PEP TALK, video that, repeated every month or so, keeps you on the drawing, creative path. Without these, Headsups!, the very real drawing despondency can creep in. I didn't draw a thing over the holidays and that was vexing because there was so much free time to draw. Replacing the batteries in the electric eraser, small thing but a segway into picking up the pen. Love this video.
This information is so important. I use it as a musician because I do get stuck, both in playing my instrument and in drawing. Thank you for explaining the process of keep it moving to keep creativity alive.
this is incredible!! I was thinking about this is morning. I usually walk down with books pencils etc... rubber and sharpener.... sharpen all the pencils ALL! Sharp pencils work best. thank you Mr AD
The way you suggest structure is really helpful. I have a chronic illness so it's not possible to schedule anything concretely, my energy levels and pain levels are on their own schedule. But this "2 Wednesdays per month" kind of approach actually could work, thanks!
Thanks for all your insights and suggestions ... due to your gentle guiding words, I've picked up drawing again ... and just day by day ... step by step, I see my improvement ! Thanks for the inspiration !
That viscous cycle can be a good thing too as an artist. I have realized during periods where I am not creating I am gathering and recording. Making lists, researching and taking notes or just learning in a different way but still growing. It comes down to willingness and motivation. Therefore the cycle can be very reliable too!
You are so right about writing down your ideas. I do that a lot. I like to draw clothes and other random things. I usually get an idea right before I go to bed and I quickly grab my sketch book and just write down for example: white hat, white shirt, blue pants and the next time I want to draw I read that and remember what I wanted to do. And thank you for your advice; you are awesome.
I can barely hear what you're saying for watching the wonderful artistic talent that pours seemingly effortlessly from your hands!!! Thank you so much.
Alphonso, I love your work and your videos are amazing and very helpful. I even went out and ordered your guide and workbook, too. I used to draw a lot when I was in college 44 years ago. I’ve recently retired and I’ve now gotten back into sketching, drawing and painting again. I love it. Thanks so much for these instructional videos, too. They are excellent!
Today must be my ‘Alphonso Dunn’ day. You have a lot out there that I have yet to watch. Thanks once again for what you are doing. I really enjoy watching and learning.
Thank you Alphonso, it's hard sometimes to find time lately. But I hear you and it all makes sense. I brought your book and it's helping me to improve.Thank you for sharing your talent and wisdom.
Thank you, Mr. Dunn. I learned a lot in watching this segment of your teaching. One😮of my problems 😢 has been collecting drawing and painting tutorials over the past few years and not going on to the next step. Your suggestions should be helpful in moving mepast the stuck stage. We finally bought your first book. I am so impressed with it, and to get the second book so I’ll have them both!
i am in China, finally got ur book before Christmas. that's the only thing i can show my appreciation and respect. nice job. looking forward your new book.
I unfortunately didn't do any drawing since a while, but going to start again. Thanks a lot for all your inputs, ideas and motivation. Have a great new year and all the best wishes from my side.
I just found & will be ordering your books. Deep thanks from a late in life wannabe w/nightmare hand & back issues-I’ll be keeping you In the loop from time to time
Thank you so much for your tips! This video really motivated me to continue my drawing and helped me push my lazy self to actually make progress in drawing!
I'm going to leave one of those cliche comments about how you posted this at the perfect time, because it's true. I was in a deep rut, and had no motivation to create. And your example of inertia really put it into perspective and was the only motivation I needed. I drew a skull today and a couple simple crappy doodles. But I feel good about all of them, knowing I can get back into the swing of things! Much respect for this video, it's very helpful
Thank you, Alphonso. I have your book and am working through it. I also always look forward to your videos and am learning a great deal about building images from the framework out.
Alphonso thanks for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm on drawing. I can tell by reading the various commentary’s that we all share your sincerity of ♥️.That’s the quality that is contagious to sincere students who can only improve. Thank you Mr.Dunn.
The very thing you were talking about I have done and that is that I stopped due to being very critical and hard with my end product. What I love about this particular video is that you touch up on the psychological feeling of guilt when inertia sets in. I have those feelings all the time. Mental struggles with myself that I don't have what it takes. Although I had these feelings of insecurity and doubt, there was always one thing that remained despite the negativity I was feeding on, and this was that I love to use different media to create art. I am not a professional I am just a person who has the desire to turn something creative (masterpiece, just kidding). I have in my head images I would like to draw, but many times it doesn't come out the way I want it to be and that's when I get disappointed. Listening to you tells me that I must continue despite my disappointments because the truth is I can't stop thinking about drawing and painting. Thank you for your insight it means a lot to me. Thank you.
Again awesome suggestions I am always so busy and I forget how calming it is to sit and draw or craft. It is the best stress reliever and a great way to shift the mind from work. Thank you :) so much !
Thanks for your motivation . It seems we all pass by this period of inactivity and moodiness. I will try to do my best because you describe exactly how one feels bad or lacks confidence when not drawing because it is an unhealthy pattern when we skip drawing for a long and then redraw., it will take a while for me personally to have this coup de crayon every time I don't draw 😮💨
Thank you, for taking the time to explain to your viewers the drawing process. I stumbled across your vlog by chance, subscribed and now I purchased a sketchbook, micron pen, gum eraser and a drawing pencil.
I loved your book, Alphonso! Thank you so much for putting everything you teach all into a book format:-) I really liked the large size of the book, the simplicity of each page not making them too cluttered enabling the reader to grasp what you are teaching. I really liked that! It will be one that I treasure for years to come:-)
I carry my bag with my pens and nibs and ink and brushes and field watercolors set and a sketchbook every day. When I wake up I say “today I am going to draw ____” And then I stick to it. I limit my youtube/ instagram time so that I can focus on my style and voice.
You made me take notes! I actually grabbed my notebook and wrote these tips down. Also some information from your urban sketching watercolor essentials video! You know what you're talking about :))
Thank you for your videos, I am an advanced artist with charcoal as my preferred medium but your knowledge on techniques are excellent. I just ordered your book and can not wait for it to arrive.
Alphonso Dunn , I just received your book, you did an amazing job. At work (call center) we are not allowed to go on UA-cam or bring tablets or cell but I can bring your book, which will make work more enjoyable. Thank you again, your book was worth every penny and more.
