That's the whole point. The song is from Corvo's point of view as he tries to keep Emily innocent despite all the horror happening around her, hence the child like quality to the music.
You know what I find funny? This game took concepts from Thief and Bioshock to create something original, stylish, and fun, and now Thief and Bioshock are both taking cues from Dishonored. Talk about the student becoming the master, huh? Really good song, by the way.
Every game developer should take cues from the best games in the genre, and then improve upon that to the best of their ability. Unfortunately, many don't care enough to bother, many more think taking cues means copy almost exactly without even bothering to try and improve, and the rest that actually do care enough to do so typically don't have the resources to make it happen.
If you do multiple playthroughs and interact with people while at the Hound Pits, you'll see that Emily actually changes a lot, but it depends on how you play. Without her mother, Corvo is who she really looks up to above anyone else, so your action mold her. On high chaos, Calista at one confides in you that she thinks you're bad influence, that Emily is becoming a scary, mean, cruel child, especially when you're around.
Had played it myself too with low chaos and tried not to kill anyone, sadly killed few guys, well, time to play the game without been seen and not killing anyone exept the targets :)
I got lucky and got a quick choke rune early on in my first playthrough, so I was able to do the very same thing. I was super pleased, and get to go on rampages whenever now. >:D
Ikr me too. Although... the game is pretty easy, even in very hard mode :/ BTW the DLC of this game is fucking awesome. Daud isn't so bad when you play in his POV
Agreed, I personally found that even in a pacifist run.. You can still make use of the violent upgrades. Using them to make sounds for one, perfect mode of distraction. *Fire explosive bolt at wall in alley* "What was that" *Guard walks away from friends to investigate* *Jump down behind and stealth incapacitate* Rinse and repeat till all are asleep.
@@electrobob992 yes exactly i love that the game offers so many fun and viable options to play the game its true freedom and it helps that the game is juicy as hell (the counters, enemy screaming etc. its just a joy to play) .

+Heisenberg Well maybe it didn't get the popularity it deserves, but the game is still pretty popular. It even got a sequel (which looks awesome so far) and unlike AC I have yet to find someone that doesn't like the game. Who knows maybe the situation will change after Dishonored 2.
+Heisenberg Possibly because it promised an open-ended game about an assassin antihero taking violent revenge upon the people that ruined his life, and instead delivered a game with a broken morality system that actively punishes an assassin for killing (yet rewards doing things to your enemies many times *worse* than killing them, like giving a woman to her insane stalker to be kept in a drugged stupor the rest of her days or selling two men into mute slavery) and boils down to a sluggish chokehold simulator. As a sequel to Thief, it was as good as the actual Thief reboot we got. As a game about an assassin, it's not a game about an assassin.

I know a great deal, bodyguard. I know how it felt to shove a blade into your Empress.-Daud. Love that guy, the remorseful assassin. The killer. The savior of Emily Kaldwin, first of her name. Walking a tightrope over a sea of blood and teeth. I love the moral choice, how, rather than affect the city, it affect's Daud, and whether Corvo beheads you or not. I can only imagine seeing a Dishonored sequel where I play as an adult Emily kicking ass with the Outsider's powers. This would only give me a reason for saving her in the original game anyway. Corvo's lack of speech just made him seem hollow, and him saving her didn't feel as interesting as Daud saving her in the Brigmore Witches DLC.
why do people say he doesnt speak? you can interact with people and talk with them. you are not gordon freeman silent but its more like skyrim, where you dont have a voice but you can talk.

Awesome video and lyrics. In my opinion, Dishonored is one of the best games if we talking about design and remarkable style! The visual side of this game is perfect.
yes :) there needs to be a game about corvo before the plague, its mentioned sometimes about how he was from a family associated with witchraft, also GIVE CORVO A VOICE ITS WHAT WILL MAKE THIS CAHRACTER ONE OF THE BEST IN GAMING!
I hope for a new Dishonored game as soon as possible. A prequel sounds like a great idea. Also playing as another character in a different location, like France for example, would be great in my opinion.
No that's just me being inconsistent with my titles lol. All the songs are written by me unless I write 'Cover version' in the title, which so far, is only one song - Over The Raindbow
I love how creative you can be with this game. I've disconnected the whale oil tanks from security systems and then thrown the tanks at the guards. The tanks explode when thrown, if you didn't know. I've seen videos of people who fire a bolt, freeze time, place a springrazor on the bolt, the unfreeze time and watch the bolt eviscerate it's target. I've seen people freeze time, possess someone, and put them in the path of an oncoming bullet.
love how around 2:14 you start mimicking "what shall we do witha drunken whaler" which plays constantly through the game but with a neat take on the tone of that
I don't know if this was intentional, but whenever you say "distant honor" in the chorus, it sounds a bit like "distant daughter," which I find highly appropriate.

Butchered everyone in first playthough and felt bad for Emily so second play through I knocked all the guards out left them in embarrassing situations and only killed my target and it left me smiling
I played through the whole game without killing anyone. At the very end of the game I dropped the final villain off the lighthouse to his death. Still got the "didn't kill anyone" achievement. :P
You wanna feel bad for Emily let havelock jump, that was my first playthrough as I wanted to hear all the dialogue he just jumped at the end. You get what is both the worst ending and my favourite ending
I personally managed to pull off getting the good ending in my first playthrough, (Thank you MGS) and I really enjoyed it. However, there was some frustration from not being able to use my full arsenal left over, so I went back and proceeded to butcher everyone.
TheIronGeneral5011 My first playthrough was a low chaos one, though only because I knew I'd get the good ending then, otherwise I'd have butchered everyone.
I know you probably get this a lot, but your music is exceptional to the point of being the epitome of what gaming music is. It does more than honor the game, it shows the artistry and outlines the world. Your music adds depth, and I love it for that Thank you for that
+Jacob whydoesmylastnamematter Dude im hearing it too. I asked Gavin on a couple of videos about it but never got a replie. Maybe I should create a Twitter account...
***** I live in america and have to say it is pretty fucked up here as corporations run this country and own the government but not as bad as dunwall with its plague filled streets and military government
And as it looks to me, your music quality is growing with each song. So I think that if you keep it up, there won't be too many people who'd even think of unsubscribing. The only way is up!
First, I was expecting a song with real dark and gritty tone, but I realized that the story of Dishonored is not that absolutely dark, and there is one thing in the game that makes me feel there is hope for a good cause, and that is Emily. Her pure innocence makes Dunwall's decadence and horror bearable for Corvo. And I think Gavin's song highlights their relationship very well. Great job!
+Kyle Vanderhoof Based on Dishonored 2's trailer, it appears that the other character will be the Nightwing/Red Hood type. (depends on which path you take in the game)
Logan Sitton It depends on how the game is played. If Corvo goes for a low chaos, non-lethal approach, that's the Batman way. Hedium chaos with some killing is closer to Deathstroke. High chaos...that's the way of the Joker.
+Logan Sitton Depends who's writing. Kane and Finger let him kill, so did Burton. That's about it, I think. I could be forgetting some. In general, everyone else, Dini, Moore, Miller (when he's not insane), Nolan, Morrison, etc. write him with a no-killing rule.
My friend said he wouldn't like it cause he doesn't like stealth games. Dishonored is so much more than just a stealth game! You have so many different ways to play...
It takes a lot of patience to play, particularly if you're going for Ghost/No Kills. Not as much as something like Dark Souls, but it still takes a lot of determination to get the best endings, which turns a lot of people away.
homeiswonderland I do too. I think I love the city the most. Unlike other games, Dunwall is her own city which is ungodly difficult to pull off in a game.
"And a distant honor calls me to your side To be your guide" I keep hearing "And a distant daughter calls me to your side..." ...oh, and spoiler alert. *snerk*
That's the nice thing about Dishonored, if you play really violent, your attitude has an effect on Emily and she ends up really evil also. The game can be hopeful or it can be dark and gritty but the change is subtle enough that you wouldn't really notice it. That's art right there.
Why you have to make so awesome songs! I mean. All of yours song express dedication, the chorus in this one is fantastics also in the Bastion Song, in the Rollout is like a feel of the 80´s. Not matter if is a joke song or a serious song, You. Make. Music. You sir, have so much talent!
I am so glad I discovered your amazing channel! So much fantastic songs here and for the games I like. "Commander Shepard" song totally stole my heart. And I finished Dishonored just a few days ago and I enjoyed it greatly. Now I can listen to this song and it ROCKS. Keep it going, friend, your music is wonderful!
I like how the overall feel reflects both Corvo's constant drive (Emily) and both the two natures that he (through the player) can adopt: the one being better than the betrayers, or the one of sheer vengance. I may go out of a limb here, but I think this is achieved by the lyrics (first, good path) and the music (latter, not-so-good path). I also liked the implementation of the nursery-rhyme/ drink song of "The Drunken Whaler" in your song.
Phenomenal job once again Gavin! I think I speak for us all when I say that you are the game musician that every game musician should aspire to be, and I hope you keep this up for years to come!
That's the whole point. The song is from Corvo's point of view as he tries to keep Emily innocent despite all the horror happening around her, hence the child like quality to the music.
This was a particularly difficult one to mix, had a lot of re-writes and re-mixing. I would say around 80-85 hours in all.

Drunken Whaler = Creepy as fuck.
I shoulda know that. I used a soundclip from drunken whaler last Halloween

How you manage to grasp the essence of these games captivates me.
Best use of the word "dreary" since the Victorian Era. ;)
Awesome... unbelievable.. Getting better and better with each new song. The lyrics are so freaking amazing!
Butchered everyone in first playthough and felt bad for Emily so second play through I knocked all the guards out left them in embarrassing situations and only killed my target and it left me smiling
in my first playthrough I shot emily to see what would happen. got a bad ending
Seriously, this man deserves way more subs. His creations are simply amazing.
I cannot wait for Dishonored 2 Song. :)
I know you probably get this a lot, but your music is exceptional to the point of being the epitome of what gaming music is. It does more than honor the game, it shows the artistry and outlines the world. Your music adds depth, and I love it for that
Thank you for that
Still the best game ever
So would love to see more of Dunwall. We only see a small slice of everything and are told of much more.
Is there a young girl voice singing the lines in the background, or are my headphones turned up so loud that I'm hearing things?
***** Nah man, just turn your volume up about 3000 decibel levels.
+Gabriel Thorpe Absolutely luney mate
+Jacob whydoesmylastnamematter Dude im hearing it too. I asked Gavin on a couple of videos about it but never got a replie. Maybe I should create a Twitter account...
I think Gav just did a slightly higher pitch overlay or something.
+Jacob whydoesmylastnamematter Now I'm hearing it...
In description :)
this = life
Dystopian?
Our world does suck
No.. It sucks
***** I live in america and have to say it is pretty fucked up here as corporations run this country and own the government but not as bad as dunwall with its plague filled streets and military government
Mr Anonymous No it's worse here in America :P
And as it looks to me, your music quality is growing with each song. So I think that if you keep it up, there won't be too many people who'd even think of unsubscribing. The only way is up!
Gavin, you HAVE to be in charge of the music for Dishonored 2.
I think he has to be in charge of music in general.
Scorecatron Agreed.
he has gotten into a game's soundtrack before, he made the end credits song for Wastland 2
Well that should happen again.
Vaughn Monger i believe he was in elder scrolls online i know malukah was
This song is so beautiful, it almost makes me cry! Poor Corvo...
a d&d song would be awesome. Think it would be a cool challenge for gavin.
Max Temmel about what though?,dungeons and dumbasses(jokes!)isn't just one story, how would he choose one out of perhaps hundreds?
Perhaps sing about a lot of different stories and how these stories can go together to go on some adventure, or perhaps sing about the universe.
Great job!
how hypped is everyone for Dishonored 2?
Your songs quickly became my favorite. I love how you change styles depending on the game and the subject matter. Thank you for doing what you do!
Corvo is Batman, Dunwall is Gotham.
+Kyle Vanderhoof Based on Dishonored 2's trailer, it appears that the other character will be the Nightwing/Red Hood type. (depends on which path you take in the game)
NetMoverSitan I'm excited to play D2. After working my ass off to keep Emily safe, I get to see my girl all grown up and kicking ass.
+Kyle Vanderhoof Batman... has a very weird track record as far as killing people goes... *seriously man do you kill or not, yes or no*
Logan Sitton It depends on how the game is played.
I literally cannot favorite this enough.
this song kinda fits me in a way
Gotta say that this is my absolute favorite song of your's that I have heard, I like most of them, but this one blows the others out of the water.
I like this song more than the actual game
you didn't like the game
God i love your songs. Theirs not much music that I adore but these songs, these i love more than every other piece of music I've ever heard
Nice work!
Dishonored is still my favorit game. Can´t understand the People how don´t like it. (Wath´s not to like?)
My friend said he wouldn't like it cause he doesn't like stealth games. Dishonored is so much more than just a stealth game! You have so many different ways to play...
It takes a lot of patience to play, particularly if you're going for Ghost/No Kills. Not as much as something like Dark Souls, but it still takes a lot of determination to get the best endings, which turns a lot of people away.
greyassassin24 And the endings... gosh, I love the story...
homeiswonderland I do too. I think I love the city the most. Unlike other games, Dunwall is her own city which is ungodly difficult to pull off in a game.
greyassassin24 :D It's so unique and--despite the rotting corpses in the streets--alive...
One of my favorites.
Fantastic.
"And a distant honor calls me to your side
To be your guide"
I keep hearing "And a distant daughter calls me to your side..."
...oh, and spoiler alert. *snerk*
I gotta say, up until this point my favorites of your songs were only your Mass Effect and Skyrim ones but this one blew me away. Bravo!
Also Known as Dimitri’s Song
(If you have played the Blue Lions Route of Fire Emblem Three Houses this will make a lot more sense)
That's the nice thing about Dishonored, if you play really violent, your attitude has an effect on Emily and she ends up really evil also. The game can be hopeful or it can be dark and gritty but the change is subtle enough that you wouldn't really notice it.
That's art right there.
Is there a second, quieter female voice beneath yours? I swear I hear another singer...
Unit645 I noticed it too. Its probably just his soft voice
Dagon Robo gav can even sing in a female voice,he's just that fucking good mate
He did it in the new black gold
Why you have to make so awesome songs! I mean. All of yours song express dedication, the chorus in this one is fantastics also in the Bastion Song, in the Rollout is like a feel of the 80´s. Not matter if is a joke song or a serious song, You. Make. Music.
You sir, have so much talent!
2020 hi :3
I am so glad I discovered your amazing channel! So much fantastic songs here and for the games I like. "Commander Shepard" song totally stole my heart. And I finished Dishonored just a few days ago and I enjoyed it greatly. Now I can listen to this song and it ROCKS. Keep it going, friend, your music is wonderful!
He means on the Escapist site ;)
I like how the overall feel reflects both Corvo's constant drive (Emily) and both the two natures that he (through the player) can adopt: the one being better than the betrayers, or the one of sheer vengance. I may go out of a limb here, but I think this is achieved by the lyrics (first, good path) and the music (latter, not-so-good path). I also liked the implementation of the nursery-rhyme/ drink song of "The Drunken Whaler" in your song.
I love the bass vocals starting at 2:24. They really lead up to the power of the unison at 2:38. Well composed, sir!
Phenomenal job once again Gavin! I think I speak for us all when I say that you are the game musician that every game musician should aspire to be, and I hope you keep this up for years to come!
