- Winter Gardening Is Fun! To be successful though, you need the right timing and you need the right plants. A whole host of plants do better in the cooler weather after the summer heat is tamed. But only a select few plants are actually frost hardy and cold tolerant!
In today's video, let's look at my top 10 winter crops that'll beat the frost and keep on growing. These plants get better as the mercury dips so let's plant a few and keep our gardening hats on for just a bit longer!
2021 is the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track!

I know parsnips and turnips are not popular, but that's because most people have no idea how much flavor they give to chicken soup. Don't forget them!
Definitely!! And rutabagas too! They can actually take it colder than turnips!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Any tips for salsify? I bought some (canned) a while back because it used to be endemic to Europe and we lost touch with it with industrialization and monocultures and I was curious, but I couldn't find a good way to cook them they felt firm and stringy.

Where I live, I have very mild winters and pretty hot & dry summers, so knowing what I can grow from late-summer through winter is a great way for me to stretch out my otherwise short growing season! Thanks.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I am just on my first year gardening, but thus far I have had good success with an early planting of radishes, I just harvested them because we had a really intensely hot couple of weeks that caused most of them to bolt, but I have a ton of onions, some celery, peas & even some cabage growing now. So far the crops doing the best are the raspberries, they came back with a vengeance this year. But after watching this, I'll probably aim to do brocoli, pok choi and carrots.

Red Russian kale stayed alive up here in MI with no cover zone 5. Very impressed with them. We had "winter vortex" 2 winters ago I was smacking ice off my kale and it still thrived.

Hi Jeff. Zone 6b. Ct. USA I love your content. I've been looking for info on over wintering veggies for the spring. First time garlic for me and looks good so far.
Cut my chard to the ground last fall, heavy mulched with chopped brown leaves and covered with a tarp silver side up. Chard came up too and the spring onion going to seed.
So much to learn but that keeps me young at 70 ish. lol Thank you.

Its crazy how fast winter can come on some years and in some regions Bev. I am fairly lucky here in that there's a big window of easing into those 6-7 really bad weeks that we get.

It can totally be done Mike! Its all timing. So many people focus on spring and summer....but if you can get your fall crops in early, pound-for-pound they can actually be your most productive plants! :-)

I remember when I first planted cilantro in missouri, when winter came and passed, the cilantro thrived almost like a weed lol
Awesome! I haven't quite figured how to keep it going right through our winters outside..... But getting there!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms It was surprisingly easy in that humid climate. I think they survived and thrived after winter because they had grown so tall before winter (I Also did the minimal effort, just bought a bag of garden soil and mixed it into the ground where I scattered seeds. No landscaping fabric or anything fancy.

@7;00 you are absolutely correct. Those seeds will sit an entire winter and germination happens at the right moment.
Carrots are a patient crop, no question!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms the same with red Russian kale, the experiment I did last year was very successful.
This year I did garlic as my overwinter.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms a guestimate around 60 and still have room for my other groceries next season for Plenty O Groceries. I'm told from a local gardener that I got the bulbs from that they should be done around July. I planted in September. He said to cut off the scapes if I want big bulbs. I also got my strawberries in the ground at the same time I planted garlic. All this is covered by 8 inches of soiled straw bedding from my goats. I'm still accumulating wood chips for the ultimate covering. This morning Friday December 10, we got 8 inches of snow finally! We have zero precipitation and I'm getting worried. So I'm thankful for this snow.

Apples-just dont pick them until the snow and cold is over!! Sweet!! Makes some great cider, hard cider, apple jack, or vinegar. Thedeer like them and i like venison!! Not much work, just feed the tree, and whatta crop!!😊

Oh hey! You're Canadian! So am I! I'm in BC and I find your videos so helpful! Sorry about all the exclamation marks, I'm actually just that excited. I've always been extremely passionate about plants and I'm finally dating someone who feels the same way and we built a greenhouse together 😁💖 He's new to growing food plants, I've worked on a few farms but it feels way different when they're your plants instead of your boss' plants 🤣

My folks have such an extreme deer/bears problem on their property that they can't really garden fully outside, anywhere they put plants needs REALLY high walls or to be completely sealed off. This means we're going to be doing all our growing in that greenhouse or on our balcony, so I've really been looking for more content relevant to this pursuit.

Bears. I'd be putting up electrified fences. Solar panels for juice.
I am in zone 5a and have had Swiss Chard and Kale survive the winter (lacinato). I tried radishes over the winter and while they struggled, a cold snap in the minus 20'sC for a few days finally finished them off. To be fair, the radishes were tiny seedlings, it was an experiment to see how long they would last

Grow them like tomatoes. Start them indoors late winter/early spring, then transplant the well-started plants into the ground when the weather warms. Harvest early fall all the way to frost. Its really the easiest, fool-proof way to grow them, (but not the only way).

i succesfully overwintered peas. Now i have a gazilion pods forming in early sprng.
I'm interested in over wintering anything. I had success with swiss chard, spring onion, garlic. Peas would be wonderful. Zone 6b. We cut the plants ground level and cover with a tarp silver side up but first chop brown leaves as mulch.

Could you make a video on increasing plants resistance to cold weather and warm weather especially indoors? I heard about this product vitalink chill meant to increase efficiently plants resistance to heat, but I was unable to find DIY alternatives. I am also curious about cold resistance improvements, especially with the winter settling in. I want to make indoor plants more resilient to lower heating without compromising on the quality of the yield too much. Maybe specific enzymes would help? Or a specific soil composition material to insulate the roots better? Maybe literally something to feed the plants cells and fatten them up? Silicone perhaps? Lots of calcium? Maybe even phosphorous & potassium? Obviously I would use a heating mat (and maybe mulch) but I want to protect the canopy without heating the whole room to 20+ degrees celcius. Does it even matter if the roots are cozy? Would it be a good idea to use a cloth pot inside a plastic pot with a heating mat snug in between?
I have green onions growing with catnip right now on my windowsill and the first frost finally hurt the catnip the main stem went limper resting on the windowsill, while the green onion is coping with less light by chilling but the frost didn't hurt it if anything the catnip dying is making the green onions stronger :D

Usually feed stores or garden nurseries. Big compressed bags, only about $9 to $10 per bag.

I have a friend who calls the day after Halloween "Gathering Day" since that's when he drives around neighborhoods picking up free bales of straw set out at the curb for trash after Halloween decorations are no longer wanted. He got over 20 bales this fall. Watch for assisted living facilities or businesses that do elaborate displays and maybe leave your name and contact info at the desk. If you collect them they won't have to pay their maintenance staff to do it. Of course they aren't the finely cut type shown in the video, but still fine for most plants. The cut type would be bagged vs baled.
So what about watering these crops if they live 3 or 4 months in the cold near or below freezing??
Depends on what the weather is doing. Usually winters that hover around freezing are mild climates that get a ton of rain in the fall/winter. In that case, don't bother watering.
Radishes can grow well into winter, and long white/daikon can survive the winter.

These are meant to be fall planted and winter harvested.
