I have been enjoying this game for about 10 months .I only play on solo because at my age [71] I don't have patience for a holes .I also play in VR and I doubt if I could enjoy this game in anything but VR.
I tried VR, but after my 65" 4K tv - VR looks like blurred low res shit. I could barely read text on panels in my ship and stars were not clear. I returned oculus rift back to store next day.
@@_Mikekkk There's a zone where everything will be clear. You gotta find it as every headset will be blurry if the lenses aren't correctly aligned to your eyes.
@@PotatoWagon I tried to align lenses, there were very little options to do that. Did not help. But even with perfect alignment it is still sooo low res, that I could see every pixel, space between pixels and metal grid under pixels. They should increase VR resolution 8 times at least before it is playable for space sims.
dennis phillips There is a huge player base which feel the same way and have organised into a set of private groups called Mobius. This gets you the social aspect of open, without the ganking!
This has got to me the most sincere overview of a game I've ever seen- Thank you. I don't think this is quite my pace and I value all the great insight you've shared here. Thank you for your time!
I love this game. The grind is insane but you can set yourself reachable goals that do feel rewarding once reached. Had so much fun in the early days hauling cargo in my type 6 but theres nothing like getting in your fully engineered anaconda and heading out on a 4 week exploration to the opposite side of the galaxy and seeing what's out in the black.
@Eternal Flow well then you’re not very educated on the black. There’s dozens upon dozens of beautiful nebulae paired with planets (albeit yes they’re all the same) that have cool geological and biological signals, potentially mixed in with more planets and stars on the horizon. And sometimes nebulae have black holes in one of their systems, making for fantastic colourful views. And if you’re like me, just looking at the galaxy from different views is rewarding enough
As an exploration pilot, the day elite adds atmospheric planets is the day it becomes god tier to me. I've flown past so many planets that look so mysterious and interesting to explore.
@@pHixiq the only viable thing in that list is FPS. We cant build bases in instanced systems. Why not? You'll be able to see ur base but someone visiting the system couldn't. Same with 1:1 populated planets. Even star citizen is having issues with that and theyve got way more people on their game.
Base building is pretty much confirmed now, the only thing I hate is that we have to wait 1 year for anything new. But can't wait for space legs. 2020 December
Graphically it’s great , the ship controls especially with a hotas is great , my biggest bug bear is the grind! ...... in space no one can hear you scream!
xTwilightWolvesx depends on what stick you end up using , I use a cheap one the thrustmaster hotas x , You can download a file to add to game files that sets the stick up for you , it’s awkward to begin with but for flight and combat it’s awesome once you get used to it
All I really wish for in Elite is like a few undiscovered alien species that have their own bubbles in the Milky Way, and for players to decide how their factions react to us. Only issue I see is with Frontier developing a complex history and constantly updating the state of affairs for each alien race's narrative. Thargoids and Guardians kinda evade that issue by being pretty mysterious and lacking a hefty amount of context.
@@N1ghtZz Aaaand you replied to a year old comment just to baselessly assume something about me because of something I enjoy, which is COMPLETELY unrelated to the subject? THAT is a good one.
As a fellow Commander, all I can say is, "Well said Sir, well said." (Long distances - Shows Hutton Orbital! LOL! Good one!) See you in the black, Commander. o7
I'm getting the game on Thursday, it feels scary which is exciting for me, my biggest "problem" is gonna be the community I've never liked online games but I'm willing to give this one a go
If you search for a nice community no man's sky have a great and humble community too. To be honest a never meet a ahole there. Its nice but sometimes its boring
This game is for anyone that grew up looking at the stars and wondering what it would be like to ACTUALLY travel them in a realistic way not for those who imagined being a Jedi... and yes I did both... in this game I am a retired Jedi that became an explorer... and sometimes bounty hunter :D That's my story
@@mikemayo4812 who's to say we won't have faster than light travel in 1000 years? Even the idea behind the fsd is rooted in science... so yeah.. It's still realistic...
Methane bit was hilarious. Great vid sir. Considering the points you addressed, you helped me view the game from a different angle. Have played since gamma, on and off. Burnout drove me away from the game. Tried to keep up with those who had all day to play or those that play nothing else. This time around I'll set my own pace and just enjoy the game instead of trying to make it a second job.
the lonely, open-ended exploration through the expanse of space appeals to me so much but i'm not sure the technical controls, money grind and community aspect does so i really appreciate that you made this video. thank you !
The best part is, the lonely open-ended exploration only requires maybe one or two missions to get a ship with a good enough jump range and ways to get fuel. Then, you go out into the black, the expanse. No one around but yourself. And little technicality when exploring. There's not much to change.
Bought this game years ago, including a flight stick. Played it for 30 mins and then left it aside. Watched this video and gave it another go. Feels much more polished now, still getting through the tutorials. Thanks.
My personal favorite part of Elite is the background lore. History and backstory have always been things that excite me, and Elite Dangerous delivers this to you in spades. Powerplay is glossed over in this summary, but each power play individual has a rich backstory along with each faction, alien species, corporation, and more. The game does a fantastic job of delivering this to you through the Codex, where you can take the written in-game lore and play it through your ship almost like a little history podcast. The fact that I don’t need to pull up a separate UA-cam window to have this happen and can instead do it directly through the game is incredibly enjoyable for me. I know this is a very niche way of enjoying Elite, but I absolutely goddarn love it.
If you're in for an action packed, flashy game that leads you through it's content, get No Man's Sky. Elite dangerous is more about realism and setting one's own goals (while still being flashy in terms of sound design and certain events). You can take the roles: Miner, Bounty hunter, explorer, trader, smuggler, pirate, faction pilot, xeno hunter and customize your ships to fit each role or multiple roles perfectly. That said, PvP is also a thing and if you want to be good be prepared to learn a lot because it can be extremely complex. The downside of the game is that the devs. don't seem to really care about it since the studio is currently doing fine. This is painfully obvious if you're deep into the game and have to use user created data bases and tools to have an enjoyable experience. Also prepare for grinding big time.
If you're in for an action packed, flashy game that leads you through it's content, get No Man's Sky. Hahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
@@hishamjalal9078 It's more of an RP thing. You can pledge allegiance to a leader of a certain faction but even this won't turn the opposing factions hostile, but gives you bonuses. You can max out your standing and rank with each faction by doing missions for them. In the end you get their best ship.
I have hundreds of hours in No Mans Sky, I saw ED on sale recently, and I love it. Everything about it feels so much better than NMS, the grind feels real, the world and galaxy feels alive, and the fact that it occurs in our galaxy with (mostly) real stars and bodies makes it even more enjoyable. I rushed engineers and stumbled across a TON of meta alloys in Maia and made a 30 million profit which kickstarted me into a Krait Mk2 combat build that recently let me A rate the entire ship. After that, I started going to stars I know that are real on my way to Sol. Seeing WISE-XXXX (i forgot the designation lol) and its tiny size with a 7 C surface temp was amazing. Seeing Alpha Centauri was even cooler. Im currently gearing my Krait to go to Sagittarius A to pay it a visit, while an AspX would be better Its not about efficiency, its about the trip there. I love this game.
Well said, CMDR. "Here is the galaxy: Now, go!" This game requires imagination and critical thinking, and I find that far more enjoyable and rewarding than hand-holding gameplay. Extra points for igniting planetary flatulence at the end.
You hit the nail on the head for why I'm liking this game (been playing for about a week). It's essentially Euro Truck Simulator in space. I find it relaxing to put a podcast on in the background and just enjoy the experience of flying around.
I have been thinking about this game for about a week now. Watching you videos is very helpful but this takes the cake! So so helpful. Thank you for this one. I think this will ultimately be the reason I buy elite dangerous! Thank you!
i really wanted to love this game the second braben talked about it. everything it does is fantastic, except the content. maybe that's just a personal preference, but i don't think a massive sandbox and great atmosphere alone is enough for a game to be good. every time i hear someone talk about it, it sounds like a monk talking about the time they lived in that monastery on a desolate island. you maybe had a divine experience but you never made love to a woman.
Hahahaha ive been watching several videos on youtube , on the tin it seems like just what i want. But the massive time commitment is whats putting me off... your comment genuinely had me laughing man, cheers.
This game sucks in so many ways, it looks really good though, ship control is awesome, I enjoy fighting in it, I enjoy the size of the model universe.... then there's the lack of purpose, and then micro transaction shit, like why would you charge extra to land on a planet.. the perfect game for me would being ED and no man's sky had a baby, kept the base building and exploration of nms , add the look and combatmof ed.
@@MrDmadness I mean there's no micro transactions. There was one (1) expansion pass, which contains all of Horizons. Which is way more than just landing on planets
What is this "grind" people are complaining about? I call it playing the game. Regardless of what I do, credits keep dropping in and i get me some engineering materials. As time goes by, I upgrade to a new ship, and when I find something I really like, I visit som engineers to upgrade the ship itself. The materials I obtained while playing the game, delivering food to systems plagued with starvation, medicines to stations with epidemics. I have hunted criminals (and might have murdered a politician, but not lately). I have been to places where no other person have been, and put my name on the maps of the galaxy. I have delivered luxury goods for a funeral, i keep up to date on the major events in the galaxy. I have downloaded the last log from a long dead geologist, that worked on a megaship that recently coasted into a populated system. I have found new friends and went on a bus tour with them, just doing silly stuff and having fun, while also seeing some of the more unique sights the galaxy has to offer. Evert time I log in, I look at where I am, and consider what I feel like doing today. Occasionally I am in the mood to make some big money, so I scoot over to my mining ship and sit for four hours straight lasering asteroids. My friends have shown me a more efficient way to do that, and I might try that the next time I get tired of buzzing around in my exploration ship. Maybe tomorrow. maybe next week. I feel no urgent need to buy a fleet carrier this month, or even this year. But I know that eventually I will be able to afford it. And then what? Then I need to figure out what to do with it, where to go that was not available before. There is a whole galaxy out there.
Thanks for a well thought review of this game. Love your perspective on it I code for a living, and in awe of its detail. I'll be dropping a mere $30 on my son's PS4 to catch a glimpse of the greatness. Can't say how long I'd stick around, but well worth the price of admission. Cheers.
I don't really comment on youtube but I felt obligated to say that this review not only sold me on the game; but also restored my dwindling faith in both the gaming community and humanity itself just a little bit. This was hands down the most honest and unbiased review I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Thank you for your service to the gaming community, sir. I'm gonna go cop Elite on steam sale now.
I just got this game today, and so far I love it. I love the fact that I’m not the “main character” I’m just another commander, and it’s really fun to explore the depths of space.
I’m still fairly new to the game (7 months in), but I love all that it has to offer. I too play on Xbox and am content with the console content as it is. Your video library is well thought out, often funny and always entertaining! Thank you for being out there and sharing your journey!! o7
Sepulcher: Relive funny moments! Me: Aggresively bashing my brand new Diamondback Explorer into the docking pad wondering why it won't land and losing 20% of my hull integrity. (I had the ship backwards on the pad.)
Thanks to your videos and a few of Yamiks as well. I got the game on March 10th. The time I'm writing this which is May 22nd already have all three of the big ships. Access to Jameson Memorial and enough credits to buy two fleet carriers. when's Fleet carries is released and I buy one and put all my credits into its thing so I can have it for a long time without worrying about the upkeep. I'm going out to the black for a long time. The things you can do in this game is nearly infinite and I love it.
@@27actanonverba I realize that but I'd consider that also a ship. In SC I have the option to hop in a Rover and explore or walk around and be a sniper or maybe a gunman infiltrating a bunker somewhere.
Just Let Me Drive next year(yeah it’s a bit of time) they said they are bringing FPS and out of ship stuff and 1:1 populated planets. I just got the game 3 seconds ago for $15 so ima see cuz of the next update
I started playing this game on november 11 this year 2019 and I've played it for a total of 53 hours so far. It's fantastic, I play solo because I like solo games. I like the lonely feeling in space but after a long haul of mining it's nice to come back to a station just to hear the hubbub of it. I know I have sooo much more to explore and find out about this game and that thought makes me very happy.
Me too. Like mining. But mining was quite boring before last updates (core mining, new devices). Stopped playing Elite for ~2 years, and returned back with new update. Still, mining could be improved a lot. Have elite rank in trading now, not because I buy/sell, but because I mined a lot of minerals and sold them for over 1 billion in cash.
I love everything about this game except, the multiple stacking grinds. And this part isn't like an rpg. If I could spend a week or two mining painite then buy everything I wanted that would make sense. Hell even if it took 2 weeks to outfit just one of the big 3 that would be fine. But it's not. You have to grind credits, reputation, and then materials which are worst of all. And if you want guardian tech, grind even more. Love the game. Despise the grind with the fury of a neutron star.
I've been wanting to get this game for years. As a kid, I was a huge fan of games like FreeSpace 2 when I saw my uncle use his gaming computer and joystick to get it up and running. In college, I tried to get into X3: Terran Conflict, but had issues running it on a non-gaming laptop. Now, I have an Xbox One and your video has been the most genuine and honest take on a game that I've ever seen; this is not a review, but rather exactly what I want to see in reviews: a breakdown of whether or not the game is for me. Thank you for making this video.
What I tend to enjoy most about Elite is how populated the game feels, especially after the fleet carrier update. The best example of this was The Egg mining zone, dozens of fleet carriers acting as taxis for players between The Egg and the best selling point, working on set time frames.
You can do anything you want but most people have a conscience. So they tend to keep a home base for all owned ships but not get into trouble there much. Although that can be sorted easily if it's got Interstellar Services to clear any bounties. It does need better Content and mechanics...expanded use of cockpit; expand Multicrew by Module Management and Navigation and no barriers to any role; Navy Missions and not just daft rank ups LOL! but in pre-loadouts in loaned ships; allow interactive NPC you can get help from or pirate; etc.
Half of it. The other half, living on a living ship and rolling your methane burping freight into the corral is available only with full "space legs." Thus my exodus to SC.
i just started playing this game and i think it’s awesome so far, i’m super excited to move farther in the game and explore the galaxy! i’ll definitely be playing all weekend. what a great video!
I have know idea how I found this channel or became insanely curious about this game in the last week. But in any event, I did, & have been watching several of your videos trying to determine if this was for me. I've been playing No Man's Sky for several months with my 8yo son & have over 400hrs invested, which is of course, a very different kind of game. After watching this video a couple of times, I thought for sure it probably wasn't my cup of tea but man did I still enjoy your videos. I finally caved to my nagging curiosity a few days ago & picked up the base game on my Xbox for $30 figuring it would take some time to learn & hopefully by the end of the month, I'd be ready to dabble in Horizons when that content becomes free if I still was interested. I can't explain it, but there is something deeply satisfying about being in the middle of nowhere just cruising along from system to system or station to station. At face value you'd think being relegated to a cockpit & menus would be boring, but the sights & sounds really drive the experience home. I'm still learning as I go, sometimes getting intensely frustrated at how much there is with next to no explanation, but this is an amazing game. Granted I'm still very early game & stick to mainly completing delivery missions to help me get accustomed to traveling, & just recently tried my hand at using my DSS (thanks to your guide on that as well). Thank you for your guides. Keep up the great work.
Wanted to come back and say thanks for this video. It's what convinced me that ED was worth giving a go. It is emphatically, a game for me, but I wouldn't have tried it without your content. 160h in, I've been a miner, combat pilot, mission runner, saved people from burning stations. You're right, this is not the game for everyone, but if it gets its hooks in you, damn is it a great title. Standing on a moon 1000ly from earth, alien ruins alighting in the background, as I stare at Sol, selected in high in the sky, but a faint dot; elite makes you feel small. Tiny. Especially in vr, it's masterful how compelling and complete the sense of scale and space is, and how pretty the game is. VR in particular turns elite from a game I would enjoy occasionally, to a place to escape. It's hard to emphasize the weight of a moon just hovering on the horizon in close orbit, slowly setting, the milky way in the background. The fact that it's a binary moon system, and orbits a gas giant, that orbits a sun, and that sun orbits another, and it all moves in real time... Thanks for your part in putting out easily consumable content that walks a user into ED. I understand why ED is designed so opaquely, it's an intentional technical decision to not spell everything out. But your guides really helped it be a more comfortable entry into the series for me
One of the best videos ive seen on a game in some time, love the way you explained, i have been looking at this game for a while now still kinda up in the air about purchasing it, watching this video did help me a bit tho thanks Sepulcher
The base game + all DLC is on Steam right now for 12$ they're giving away the DLC next year, but it's only a couple bucks more then just the base game, and honestly it's worth it to get access to it now for that price, and I think you get a few paintjobs for the bundle as well. Picked it up for a buddy of mine.
First time I played Elite Dangerous in early 1990s (or late 80s) on ZX Spectrum. Before internet and windows. :) Made my own joystick and controls. Had elite rank.
As recreational gamer I went into solo exploration - no pirate threats, minimal risk. Few advices for newbies after 300+ hr worth of playing. 1. Treat exploration data values as added not target - avoid getting bored quickly. 2. Set up your ship for long journey, A class FSD, fuel scoop and at least one maintenence unit are mandatory. Shields are usable too - weakest but any. 3. Set point on galaxy map as "I want to be here" and set bookmark. 4. Plot route as You wish. 5. Go into black, enjoy views and occasionally scan something. Make some pictures (screenshots) for memory. o7 👍
I feel much the same way about Elite VR. As I told someone else, "Lasering space rocks is a lot more interesting when you're in VR." This gets cranked up to 11 when landing on a planet and rolling out in an SRV, seeing the barren dust stretch out in front of you, possibly only illuminated by your headlights, and an alien sky above. Combat is always interesting when you can plausibly look around to visually identify targets and check what they're doing, though a lot of cockpits are not designed for this at all. And somehow docking hasn't gotten old yet in VR, since I'm doing a mix of IFR and VFR things as I approach the pad, peeking out the lower cockpit windows to check my alignment, double checking sensors, pulling the landing gear lever, visually scanning for nearby traffic...
Completely in love with elite it’s fucking awesome and I appreciate it for what it is, met 2 dudes in a resource extraction site and they’ve simply become my gaming homies and it’s honestly made me happy, played games for years and always alone but thanks to elite I’ve my hombres now and can honestly say I have genuine fun gaming now
What I really want from this game is the ability to get out of your ship and walk around space stations. It would add so much more to the immersion of this game and it would also make the character customization have more validity to it since right now you can’t see your character or the cool outfits you can get outside the customization menu. Just imagine docking and then leaving your ship and you go walk around the station and talk to mission givers or just sit in a lounge area with other players socializing or go to a vendors to buy or sell items just taking in the atmosphere of it all. Kind of like destiny’s tower. The way I imagine it in my head makes me excited that one day we’ll see this implemented. Maybe next console generation.
The way you put that feeling from exploring into words is exactly why I do it That feeling of being where only few people have been before, discovering things few people have seen with their plain eye before. And then, returning to sell my data and seeing my name getting put on things...I wouldn’t play the game without it.
That’s a great, unbiased view of Elite. I’ve been playing since the PS4 release in 2017. But I’ve often struggled to recommend or even explain the game to my brother and my friends. Well done CMDR.
Just started the game for the first time today, and I'm enjoying it immensely. I haven't felt this lost and this stressed about operating a vehicle since my first drivers ed class, but it's a strangely enjoyable experience. Looking forward to becoming an experienced pilot and joining the community.
ya ive been playing SC (awesome but very unfinished), and No Mans Sky... Im looking for No Mans Sky exploration, with a player made economy, pvp, and politics. Hope this will be the one for me :D

When i was a kid (too long ago) i did play some games, but i never really considered myself as a gamer. In the past 10+ years i barely touched any video games. But when i'll buy a new PC, i do plan to try ED. It's so fascinating to me to be able to fly around the galaxy, land on planets, get energy from stars, being stranded, finding places no other player have been before, etc. I don't know if my life will ever make this "chill time" possible, but this game is definitely on the list.
I agree whole-heartedly with the points you pose here. When I feel like I want to explore, I play Elite. It's the only thing that scratches that itch for me. I love LOVE the immersion of the game. UI, atmosphere, attention to detail, the small things. Absolutely wonderful. From the quiet, serene sounds of sitting in normal space to alarms blaring and things shutting down and your canopy breaking while in combat, everything is just blended so PERFECTLY! I only wish Odyssey had a little more polishing time... I don't really like the state it came out in, performance wise :((
I really enjoyed the review and agree with most of it even after my 1600+ hours with it. My only point of contention is the idea of the dev's communicating with the community, I mean they really don't, recently there even was a really big petition signed by lots of people in the community to see if the dev's would even acknowledge it
They've certainly cut back on engagement over the years, that's for sure. But I wouldn't count that petition against them, as it doesn't sound like that petition was done in good faith. I doubt I'd have responded to such a thing myself. But they have been less engaged recently anyway. I've noticed that ever since their handling of the Gnosis incident. This is a subject I could do a whole new video on.
I don't need much content. All I want is details and atmosphere. Those things were always 80% of a game for me. With Odyssey coming next year, being able to explore graphically refreshed planets on foot gets me real excited.
A very rare showcase for everything Elite, and Cmdr..true in every word and sense..people often ask what has kept me playing Elite Dangerous almost daily for 3 years. Now I can point them at this...nice one sir
Omg! Your either the most boring gamer in the world or just a gluten for punishment. You've looked at loading screens for 3 years?? That sucks for you. Lol
I really liked your review-approach, it does what 99% percent of reviewers barely touch on: managing expectations. Decided it its most likely not for me, but i see that it has many aspects that appeal to a certain audience.
WOW - I bought my kids a Rift S for their birthday (they're twin 9 year olds). A friend mentioned ED and I jotted it down - and came to this VERY APPROPRIATELY titled video to find out if it will be right for them. While I think it wont be right for them, I'm buying it anyway on the summer sale because at $7 for the base game - my space infatuated son MIGHT love it and if he doesn't - it will be waiting for me come bedtime. Thank you for such an informative video, I love your style and subbed immediately.
Amazing review (non review)! I played a game called Freelancer on my Sony vaio back in idk 2005/6/7. I have been waiting for this game and your review sold me, plus it’s 75% off on Steam right now!! Thanks 🙏
I really want this game. Before I spent a year driving myself mad in WOW, I don't think I would've enjoyed this game. However, after playing both warcraft and DnD, I have come to love games that are self-driven. Now when I play a narrative game, I feel like I am watching more than playing. I need that RP to really make the experience special.
10:40-I absolutely adore that ending. I have been playing for several months now and can say that I am in my element. This is the kind of space game I have been looking for. I was kinda intimidated at first, but I have learned so much that it doesn't bother me anymore. I am trying my hand at bounty hunting and exploring. Trading is maxed but I do it on the side sometimes..lol. love your videos.
I loved Elite in the 80's on a ZX SPECTRUM 48k, now 46 and rarely play games I bought this yesterday. I have a modern PC I built last year for photo editing but rarely gets used. I am waiting on my first ever 43" TV and it is 4k so I decided to buy this and hopefully will enjoy it. I already have Thrustmaster HOTAS flight controls so for only £4.79 including Horizons I have nothing to loose! PC spec is 16GB RAM, Ryzen 5 2600, GTX 1060 6GB
50hours on this game was for me. After that I feel like I can't manage to find the inner inspiration to have fun by myself. I don't regret any of this, thank you for this video, thank you Frontier.
Been playing Elite since 1984, on my Family BBC Micro then moved onto the Amiga and Frontier Elite II, First Encounters on the PC, then finally ED at the start of the Alpha. I love Elite.
I started to enjoy the game when I said 'screw the grind I will just set my own goals". Then I remembered one of my favourite books Cosmos and how amazing the paintings depicting alien landscapes, binary star systems and neutron stars. So I decided to look for that kind of stuff, take a bunch screenshots. Last time I spent like 2 hours traveling around on two planets orbiting a blue star, taking screenshots. Having a ton of fun now with the game. My advice would also be, use your imagination, don't expect to just do progression and hoarding money. Explore and try to think out of the box.
I love Elite. I had to find out most of the elements of the game by myself, but a good friend of mine who didn't know i played the game taught me how to deep core mine and build exploration ships. Now we are on our first trip to the Galactic Core, then to Beagle Point. We are about 9,000 light years from Colonia. We each put our name on a Black hole so far as well.
I’m have been enjoying Elite Dangerous for the past few years now. The one reason I love it is due to way it grabs a mature community. Kids have no patience…. And you need to have patience to play this game. And you really really have to earn …. These developers is not giving you any thing for free. Beautiful game I’m glad I discovered this classic. I’m Commander KBizzzal and I’m elite trader and ensign with the Feds. Expert in combat. …. Ranger in exploring. Oh I do have a Anaconda with well engineering. Crazy thing is I’m still growing and building. My goal is get the fleet carrier and become elite in all. And I’m still dancing in the bubble.
While it's not quite as complex as I would like, it's well within the the parameters of what has been classically considered a "space sim". The central question to consider when measuring this game's suitability for you is do you like flying spaceships. Not shooting things, not doing crazy maneuvers in asteroid belts, not earning bigger ships, just flying. That is the core experience you need to enjoy to like this game. Having some sort of head tracking gear enhances the experience greatly, and I imagine VR is even better.
This, and if flying ever starts to feel easy, challenge yourself to flight assist off 100% of the time. All of a sudden every ship is unique in how they handle. The game has brilliant flight mechanics.
Yeah I'm exited to start, really glad that Odyssey is around the corner just as this popped up on my radar again. I mostly read sci-fi nowadays and feel like this game can be amazing and complementary to this time in my life. Going balls deep, wish me luck!
There is a good video to watch about how to get the best start in Elite Dangerous. You can really get a quick start and have a lot of fun fast by using the methods laid out in it. I got into an Asp rather quickly and find Core mining to be rather fun. Which led to a lot of riches and exploration by jumping to the highest buying stations. I haven't been too far out of the bubble yet, I just got the game not to long ago but it's pretty sweet.
New player here. I agree with most of what you said. The most frustrating part of I'm finding so far is the navigation aspect of it. Too close to a gravity well, can't use FSD...then it takes 5 minutes to fly far away enough from a planet to engage FSD. Want to engage FSD? Well sorry there's a planet in the way...use the clunky menu system unlock the waypoint, set a different waypoint, fly toward it enough to get line of sight on where you want to go...disengage FSD, set the waypoint back, and then engage FSD again. I feel like I'm missing something because that's ridiculous.
cant get enough of ED! had it singe 4 years now and even when I dint play it for few months or longer I always come back to it... love all of it, only the Grind could be a bit less but the rest is best!!!👏👏👏 well done FRONTIER DEVELOPMENT
I played Elite on my Commodore 64. It was all in just wire frame graphics. I loved it. So different from any other game ever written to that time. It also had this same type of open option play mode. I like it this way.
Excellent overview. Thank you. I don't know if I have the time to invest in this game at the moment but I love that this is something that's out there.
At 2:24 you was at Hermitage 5, that is my favourite mining spot, it has a 3 void opal spawns and is usually right next to a system that buys void opals for 1.6mil.
i am finding its pretty realistic in the way it portrays the universe and if/when we explore it, unexpected shit happens, its a dangerous universe out there, hence the name i would say.
Yeah but "setting your own goals" in E:D is like trying to breathe while getting strangled, IMO it's something you can't in E:D. Unless it's just going a long distance and then doing nothing once you get there, except seeing the sites and explore a bit... What you can do now is exactly the same as you could 4 years ago. I'd really like to build mining rigs, outposts, agriculture etc. on desolate worlds trying to BUILD something. But you just can't... Calling E:D a sandbox is wrong, because sand lets you build something, not just participate as a spectator. The closest and only thing you can "build" in E:D is your ships by putting mods on them.
I bought ED and while it was downloading i realised that it was Star Citizen that i really wanted to play so i bought into that (i got the FL MAX). I find myself watching this video today because i am torn between buying x4 foundations, or actually loading up ED for the first time lol.
I like this game! At the same time, it’s also one of the most boring, mind-numbing things that I could possibly experience. But that’s what you need sometimes, a desert bus reskin, or rock blaster x 1000, or press j and ‘ a thousand times in a row, something to idle to, a thoughtless void which takes away any semblance of cerebral activity. well, that’s what it is to me, at least. By virtue of its repetitiveness, it becomes intoxicating, unique. And that’s special.
People who don't like ED lack imagination. ED was great for me as i lost 1000's of hours on Frontier Elite II on my Amiga ED is and was what i imagined it could be if computers were more powerful during my childhood.
@@_Mikekkk WMR has higher resolutions than both Oculus and the Vive, so I guess that's why I don't have that problem.
dennis phillips There is a huge player base which feel the same way and have organised into a set of private groups called Mobius. This gets you the social aspect of open, without the ganking!
Is there anyone who can appreciate a really good UI. I mean I just makes this game so much more cool looking and immersive.
I would say whole the UI can be pretty, that is all it is. A lot of bad decisions on navigating, nesting, buying, storing, etc.
Hope you would forgive Kenshi haha there are mods though to make it look better :)
Even though I’m Xbox and don’t have the mods to make the ui better I love how you can free look and it all pops up when you look at it
This has got to me the most sincere overview of a game I've ever seen- Thank you.
I don't think this is quite my pace and I value all the great insight you've shared here. Thank you for your time!
@Hatwox overview my boy, he said overview
@Hatwox you’re correct. However incorrect in Ernst at the same time.
🎼 Take me out to the Black... Tell them I ain't coming back... Burn the land and boil the sea... You can't take the sky from me... 🎼
so what is out in the black? the same stuff
Reaching Beagle Point for the first time is...exhilarating to say the least
Scissortongue check next years update. Bringing base building, FPS, 1:1 populated planets. A lot of stuff. Just got the game 3 seconds ago lmao
@@pHixiq yeah they say that but I'll believe it when I see it, Frontier aren't really known for delivering on time
@@pHixiq the only viable thing in that list is FPS.

Dan Mchugh What controls would you recommend for a hotas? I’m new to the game, I just bought a hotas, but I have no idea how to work it.
xTwilightWolvesx depends on what stick you end up using , I use a cheap one the thrustmaster hotas x , You can download a file to add to game files that sets the stick up for you , it’s awkward to begin with but for flight and combat it’s awesome once you get used to it

Dan Mchugh Fair haha 😊
All I really wish for in Elite is like a few undiscovered alien species that have their own bubbles in the Milky Way, and for players to decide how their factions react to us. Only issue I see is with Frontier developing a complex history and constantly updating the state of affairs for each alien race's narrative. Thargoids and Guardians kinda evade that issue by being pretty mysterious and lacking a hefty amount of context.
for all we know there could be.
just look at Odyssey release and how messet it was on beginning. And further :(

I'm getting the game on Thursday, it feels scary which is exciting for me, my biggest "problem" is gonna be the community I've never liked online games but I'm willing to give this one a go
Cooper Pahl what platform ?
Dont be worried, elites online world is empty af.Thats why i quit it,its too empty for me.
Cooper Pahl there’s nobody online
The online is empty until you reach your destination. Then you get ganked.
If you search for a nice community no man's sky have a great and humble community too. To be honest a never meet a ahole there. Its nice but sometimes its boring
This game is for anyone that grew up looking at the stars and wondering what it would be like to ACTUALLY travel them in a realistic way
not for those who imagined being a Jedi...
and yes I did both... in this game I am a retired Jedi that became an explorer... and sometimes bounty hunter :D That's my story
A realistic way would take months to get to Mars... forget about other stars.
@@mikemayo4812 who's to say we won't have faster than light travel in 1000 years? Even the idea behind the fsd is rooted in science... so yeah.. It's still realistic...
I hope they add lightsbers in Odyssey
"Retired Jedi" ? You mean you quit...there's no retirement.
@@mikemayo4812 like Obi Wan said, to be fair this game is set 1300 years into the future lol that’s a long time from now.
Elite 2020: You won't ever walk, but you can fly
Elite 2021: You can fly and walk, just not at the same time.
Elite 2024: ?

You lost me at "intellectual stimulus", how are the physics on the metal bikini's?
Wait... did i miss sexy ladies or the reference?
Neeverseen funniest intro line i’ve read this year, thank you!
If you're in for an action packed, flashy game that leads you through it's content, get No Man's Sky.
Hahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
New player here. How do you become a faction pilot?
@@hishamjalal9078 It's more of an RP thing. You can pledge allegiance to a leader of a certain faction but even this won't turn the opposing factions hostile, but gives you bonuses. You can max out your standing and rank with each faction by doing missions for them. In the end you get their best ship.
@@Neeverseen oh wow. Is it the power play thing that you unlocked when first ranking up?
Thank you!
Elite Dangerous in VR is an incredible experience. Good review.
i really wanted to love this game the second braben talked about it. everything it does is fantastic, except the content. maybe that's just a personal preference, but i don't think a massive sandbox and great atmosphere alone is enough for a game to be good. every time i hear someone talk about it, it sounds like a monk talking about the time they lived in that monastery on a desolate island. you maybe had a divine experience but you never made love to a woman.
Which is way more than just landing on planets

well the fact that i don't make love to a woman very often is why i think about playing the game to be honest :D

“I get to experience lonliness”

Cheers.

Thank you for being out there and sharing your journey!! o7

Why am i watching this. I already own the game..
Those are some great suggestions.
Basically if any of you loved Firefly now you can experience it.
Half of it. The other half, living on a living ship and rolling your methane burping freight into the corral is available only with full "space legs." Thus my exodus to SC.
This is one of those games that I REALLY want to love and play, even if I have a lot of reasons not to. Its funny I think...
i just started playing this game and i think it’s awesome so far, i’m super excited to move farther in the game and explore the galaxy! i’ll definitely be playing all weekend. what a great video!
4:50: yes, it was extremely thrilling for me

Same.

Chose not to because ps5 is too close now, and this Covid situation made me rearrange my priorities this year.
Make some pictures (screenshots) for memory. o7 👍
This is what I needed! Thank you for putting in the time and effort to making this! This answer a lot of questions other reviews don't.
The way you put that feeling from exploring into words is exactly why I do it
That feeling of being where only few people have been before, discovering things few people have seen with their plain eye before. And then, returning to sell my data and seeing my name getting put on things...I wouldn’t play the game without it.
Man I wish someone would crap Void Opals all over _my_ hull...

It's so fascinating to me to be able to fly around the galaxy, land on planets, get energy from stars, being stranded, finding places no other player have been before, etc. I don't know if my life will ever make this "chill time" possible, but this game is definitely on the list.
OMG I loved the ending! Good stuff man
I agree whole-heartedly with the points you pose here.
If only Elite had the content of Eve. It would be the perfect game. IMO
THIS. if Elite players were given the ability to craft their own ships/equipment/Stations from the mined resources, it could improve it tenfold.
So refreshing to hear from someone who comprehends objective quality versus subjective preference. The good writing is just icing on the cake.
As somebody who plays sandbox games often, and loves space games, this is a game I want to play once I can
50hours on this game was for me.
Love your videos, man. Just getting started in the game, but I plan to spend a lot of time in it.
I’m a new player and I love it I just fly my adder on some trade routes do trade routes and just look at the galaxy
VR is the best was to immerse yourself in this game.
And thanks for the info, really good vid
This sounds awesome, hope they add some of this.
Used to play elite then found star citizen and I'll never look back
me too
I bought ED and while it was downloading i realised that it was Star Citizen that i really wanted to play so i bought into that (i got the FL MAX).
