I just watched this. I never would have thought that I'd look to a "snotty rich kid" who grew up never needing anything. It's amazing, how in just a short time, she became a human being to me who has experienced a loss so great who has helped so many other people. What a gem. She's truly a strong person. My mom was also a young widow (21) when I was a baby and I still have no idea how she made it through those days. Now, after having lost my mom, I can totally relate to Mattie when she is talking about going into those dark valleys ... because the cost of loving is hurting. And you have to walk through those valleys and really... YOU WANT TO because if you have no hurt, then you didn't have love. Thank you for making her real to me.

Such an amazing podcast. I lost my boyfriend 13 years ago and everything she spoke about I completely understood. I’m so glad that there is help for widows out there as there was not for me.

This has been so good. I lost a son and husband in 4 months. To see her inspiration and how she has dealt with death very good.

My husband and I have been dealing with grief in a backwards way. My husband and I had to deal with grief before I pass. I have a long term terminal illness. For the longest time my husband and I didn't think marriage was possible because we thought that we would never have the "many years together" factor as part of our life together. Our premarital counselor told us, "It's not the quantity of time, but it's the quality of life that we can choose to enjoy with each other." We know there is a greater possible chance for my husband to be a widow too soon. However, We just celebrated our 5 year anniversary November 2021. We are so grateful for each day we have with each other. I don't know how long I have left, but we are determined to enjoy every moment of it. (we are in our mid 40s.)
I loved how Mattie talked about "working through your hurt." She is right. It's a tough process and it's a continual process of sorting it all out, especially when we have to "take two steps backwards!" a lot of the time. Learning coping skills and taking time to be honest about our pain really helps with our mental health. Sometimes it's okay to NOT BE OKAY. And just take time to process and get through it. Thank you Shawn and Andrew for introducing Mattie to us! She is such an inspirational person. God is good to give us up and joy through all things. Even with the joy of learning how to get through the hurt. We are never alone in our hurts.

Bless you guys. I had mentioned in regards to couple things, that the loss of a spouse should be discussed and praise God you did. A loss of spouse at anytime during marriage. This is a subject that I am passionate about being a widow myself. Yes recognize your pain but don't let it consume you. You can learn so much about yourself as a person.
I will say you have to at times have to ignore what some people say like get over it. You find that it's not worth your time to deal with stupid.

OMG, another great podcast. I got 75% of the way through it and then had back to back calls... and had to finish in between because I couldn't wait to get back to the conversation. (maybe I shouldn't have started it during the work day? but I couldn't help myself) Thank you to Mattie for putting so much of herself out there and the work she is doing. Best wishes and we look forward to seeing how God uses you in the future for His work and the blessings he has in store for you.

Hey from Indy and thanks for another great podcast! This came at a good time for me, I miscarried for the second time just a few days before this came out. Something I struggled with when I miscarried my first, was wondering if I was overreacting by being so sad since it was so early in the pregnancy. I finally realized that however tiny that baby was, it was a life that was lost. And it was precious to me and to God. Also, people often don't know what to say, and what they say can make things much worse, so keep a good core group around you.
I really appreciate you two and how you value family, I feel like that's really rare these days.
I've been a fan of Shawn since her Olympic days, and never dreamed we had so much in common!

Such a special podcast, she is very inspirational and I wonder if she has ever spoken to Helen, Craig Strickland's widow. Both extremely special women who have been blessed by God with wisdom and guidance through tragedy. I would love to see them connect, I think it would bless both of them.

Another great conversation on this topic would be with Brandon Janous. He recently lost his wife to her second battle with cancer and has continued to share how her legacy impacts others. He is a father to 3.
