On this video ua-cam.com/video/1YeFPM0k9S8/v-deo.html you can see the transmission filler with a yellow cap on it. It goes from the driver's side of the transmission pan and sticks up into the engine compartment. be sure to check the level warm/running in park. For the differential fluid, it's different. If you don't have a Bentley manual, it's expensive but worth it.
Good point - I have changed the title of the video to be more accurate. I have not eliminated the cooler, I removed the stock cooler and added an aftermarket cooler.
@@jwgmail need to folliow up with assembly. I added a gowesty external cooler on mine. Super important to include how to properly fill and check auto trans fluid. Check atf after a proper shifting through all the gears . put in park and allow engine idle then check dipstick on both sides, tends to smear on one side of the dipstick. Make sure oil is between low and high mark. Better to be in between the two levels than to overfill your transmission. Real easy to do that. There is no magic number regarding how much atf fluid it should hold since torque converter holds quite a bit of oil in itself plus if you add an aftermarket oil cooler you'll need to learn how to check your automatic transmission fluid for proper fluid levels when you are putting oil back into the transmission.
@@antech555 I appreciate your more constructive comment. To me, that wasn't the subject of the video. I figured if someone was going to do the relatively advanced work of changing the filter or adding an external cooler, they would already know the relatively basic work of adding / checking fluid. Similarly, if I were to make a video on replacing the water pump, I probably wouldn't feel the need to discuss how to add coolant.
Hey good video I'm doing mine this weekend but I couldn't see how to fill it back up again. Am I missing summit obvious lol.

Oh also, I hold up the filler tube at 1:33 in this video
Never use thread sealer on the dipstick tube. That’s a crush fitting not npt.
How much fluid did it take
I think the Bentley should tell you, otherwise I have used this for reference in the past:
www.westfalia.org/threads/vanagon-fluid-capacities.658/
Automatic Transmission:
All -- dry fill 6.0L (6.3 qt.); refill - 3.0L (3.2 qt.) The reason for the difference is the amount captured in the torque converter, which cannot be drained in car. However, A/T fluid has excellent life so a drain, filter replacement and refill every 2 years will usually catch any particulates and refresh the additives sufficiently that a complete drain is not required. Severe contamination may require several, short interval drain & refills or professional flushing.
VW specifies Dexron©/Dexron II©, but Dexron III© is now available. Mercon© and Mercon V© are Ford spec fluids. They meet Dexron© specs, but not vice-versa so you'll frequently find fluids rated Dexron III©/Mercon©, which is satisfactory. Do NOT use ATF+3 (certain Chrysler transmissions) or Type F ( mile) transmissions with special additives such as seal conditioners & cleaners. Suggest changing every 30K.
Valvoline MaxLife ATF
I wouldn't eliminate the transmission cooler

Hate videos with no verbal content.
But how do you feel about this video?
