  • Skating brilliantly - much better than at the Olympics where she doubled both triple jumps, Linda made quite an impression at her first Worlds in Gothenburg...not least because her dress was so much more fabulous than anyone else's! We also get to see Frank Carroll 1970's style. What's not to love?

That dress was iconic! Frank made her remove her warm up jacket before everyone and the audience gasped...

Other than missing her lutz, this was one of her very best programs.

Should have won gold in 80

That first double Axel is huge! Great performance. Thank you for posting.
I competed in Los Angeles at the same time as Linda but I was never in her league :-)

@floskate I just watched her Olympic FS and she opened with a triple toe and triple salchow.

Watch again. She really opened up, doubling the sal and just held on which may have got to her and led to her then doubling the toe straight after.

Maybe you're mixing up Linda's 80 Olympic LP with her 76 Olympic's ? For Linda's 76 Olympic's LP she doubled both the sal and the toe. It looked like she slid off an edge on the sal and almost did a walchow.

She was better as a young skater than as she got older. From 78-80 she was super boring and overscored, but showed such potential when she was younger.

Yes, that's true. Linda's best performances were at 76 Nationals and Worlds. I like her 77 SP a lot also (it actually looked more complex than her 80 SP.) Linda's triples got smaller and less impressive looking after 76, and her presentation became more inward too. I think most of the blame was with the coach Frank Carol; Linda was his first real star student, and he wasn't experienced back then to take her to the next level. It also didn't help that her main rival back then was the weaker free skater Annett Poetzch, and they only met like once a year from 78-80. More competitions against better fee skaters would've made Frank develop Linda more I think. In hindsight, I think it would've been a game changer for Linda if she had left Frank for Carlo Fasi after 76.
I think the top female skaters from 77-80 were overall disappointing compared to their male counterparts. Look at the intricate free programs from male skaters like Robin Cousins and Charlie Tickner and then compare their programs to the rather simplistic choreographies of Poetzch and Fratianne; Disappointing.

@@AT-jm4dl I would have to agree w/ you, she really didn't add anything technically to her free after this..her Oly free needed at least 1 more 2A (in combo) plus a loop jump and a second 2Lz or 2F (Dagmar and Annett both had 3 triples and 3 2A planned), and Frank Carroll was held in lower esteem comp to Fassi and also Frau Mueller which is partly why Linda lost but Frank and/or Linda did nothing betw 79 and 80 to help her cause - I think they were relying on Poetzsch falling perhaps...

@@miloandtock1 I agree I always thought that she should have thrown in an extra jump or 2, because of the way that that horrible Annett was being scored. Say what you want to about Linda, But Annett was a horrible skater to me completely uninspiring and uninteresting.

@@miloandtock1 I agree with you on that, she should have added more technically. She used to do three double axles, then she downgraded it to two . But no matter what, Poetzch was a horrible skater. Completely unimpressive! Linda should never have lost to her.
