For what it matters, artistry is more important to me than being a Sky Dancer 3000 with flawless, robotic jumps. Her performance here and in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano Japan are both beautiful.
Her spins have such a unique style. She doesn’t get many rotations in and they lack power, but the simple style and straightforward positions gives them an elegant quality
Wonderful performance deserves a wonderful soundtrack like this one Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, performed by Joe Hisaichi. In my perspective she deserved Silver. And very close to Oksana's Gold.
She rotates so quickly in the air. It looks like she's got a delay when she takes off then rotates very quickly and lands. She wasn't given enough credit I think. She's actually a very beautiful skater. But this was during the time when winners are still supposed to come from US/Canada or Europe. Unless you're an American-born Asian skater, it will be hard to make a name for yourself.
It's so great to see this footage in HD from way back in 1994. It's an unexpected treat, a gem. So much from the past even until 2008 is lousy quality visual, so thank you.
She was so much more graceful and dynamic than Nancy...and as much as I love Oksana, Lu was more powerful, she could have easily won the gold here if not for the small mistakes
Personally I think Chen Lu is way too underrated- Understandably she made a small slip-up but she really did deserve Silver. If she hadn’t made that tiny mistake she would have definitely won gold. Not only was her performance elegant and beautiful but she was as well.
I was only 10 when I watched this event and I didn't appreciate the "magnificent choreography" (Scott Hamilton's words) at the time, but each time I watch now, I see how excellent it was. Much more sophisticated than Nancy's or Oksana's choreography. I agree with you that Lu deserved silver!
Technically their programs are comparable. Oksana should have received bronze in my opinion, her program was quite lacking technically although she was very consistent and had good edge work, Lu and Kerrigan had great jumps, edge work, and a very Orthodox style.
I think if she had done one direct combination and/or not fallen on the 3 flip, she very well could have won the long program. This was arguably the strongest artistic program of the night and thr best choreographed program of the competition.
+MrSatterwhite Well, at least silver because Lu was in 4th after the SP. But I said it then and I say it now, that Nancy was the clear winner, but Lu was 2nd in the free, Yuka was 3rd in the free.
I totally agree with you that Nancy should have been 1st, Chen Lu 2nd and Yuka Sato 3rd in the Free Program. Oksana should have been 4th in the FP and 3rd overall.
This was a good long program, but I don't think Chen Lu would have won gold had she skated cleanly. Even with that mistake on the triple flip, and Nancy Kerrigan's doubled flip jump... well, both of them had superior long programs to Oksana Baiul, and yet they both finished behind her in the freeskate.
I would have had LuLu second in free shake. The podium should have been Kerrigan, Chen and Really tough call between Basil and Bonaly for third. I would have given it to Bonaly.
I am in agreement with all that see the positives in Chen Lu’s skating, and also have to saw judging back then was incredibly biased and political. Had she been Russian or American, the color of her medal would have been at least silver, With that said, the key issues the prevented her from really breaking through the bias and the politics was the speed of her skating. She just didn’t have enough flow and her spins often travelled too much.
Lovely skater. She should have won silver, and Nancy bronze. I felt sorry for Chen Lu having to listen to Nancy's tirade about Oksana while they were waiting for the medals ceremony. On the other hand, if we hadn't witnessed that we would have never known Nancy's true colors.
Nancy is practically shooting death rays out of her eyes when the gold medal is presented to Oksana. She changes facial expressions when she realizes the camera is on her.
@@melissakerber8287 I never bought into Nancy. But the politics of figure skating had her going in ahead of Tanya on the USA team. I didn't see it. But as it stands, I don't think we'll ever get rid of politics in what is a subjective judging event. Too bad, really.
I always liked the music on this program but I don't remember the name of it - can anybody help me with either the composer or the name of the piece of music she skating to? It's gorgeous!
The music was from the soundtrack to "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," a 1984 Japanese animated film, which was composed by Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi (also known as Mamoru Fujisawa).
Even with the hand down on the triple flip...This program should have been place ahead Oksana Baiul...It had more difficulty and superior choreography. Oksana had five triples and one of them was two footed...Chen Lu had five clean triples including TWO Triple Lutzes.
The judging of the ladies at this Olympics has never made sense to me. I am in agreement with the technical program standings having Kerrigan 1st, Baiul 2nd, Bonaly 3rd and Chen 4th, but the free skate is where the judging was problematic. I would have ranked the free skate as Chen 1st, Baiul 2nd, Sato 3rd, Kerrigan 4th, and Bonaly 5th. Unfortunate for Yuka that her technical program was marred by the single Lutz and a 7th place finish, which really took her out of the medal contest. My final results would have been Baiul 1st, Chen 2nd, Kerrigan 3rd, Bonaly 4th, and Sato 5th. It’s always been a mystery to me why Nancy was always so unbelievably over marked in artistic impression for her lack of expression and grace. Her skating exuded no joy and her style was always robotic.
Chen Lu and Nancy Kerrigan did well, but Oksana Baiul honestly won the gold. Oksana is a charming and fragile, hot-tempered girl. She skates flawlessly on the ice, flawless in everything.
Don’t kill me for this please - but Oksana was way overmarked technically. Artistically, yes, she was amazing and a beauty to watch, but how she received higher technical marks than Lu Chen considering their content is something I cannot understand.
Very good and sensible judging and placements! I watched this on livetelevision back in 94, and I've never changed my ranking for the free skate. I have the same free skate placements as you but with slightly different scores, but after Sato in third, my fourth place free skate is Tanja Szewczenko.
I watched this on live television during the 94 Olympics, and today I still have the same free skate placements: 1. Chen, 2. Kerrigan, 3. Sato, 4. Szewczenko
@Garland English remember in short program the triple lutz double toe bumped in the wall here she triple lutz double toe supposed to be a triple lutz triple toe no combination a landing little off in the first lutz and a touch down on the triple flip all the ladies had problems with their triple flip except Tonya
For what it matters, artistry is more important to me than being a Sky Dancer 3000 with flawless, robotic jumps. Her performance here and in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano Japan are both beautiful.
I love the delayed action on her jumps. It gives them an airy quality.
This program was very ambitious for its time. Holds up well. Sophisticated and intricate choreography.
Her spins have such a unique style. She doesn’t get many rotations in and they lack power, but the simple style and straightforward positions gives them an elegant quality
i love the energy of her skating!

True she goes into the air first then starts rotating its very difficult
@@joccskates4497 means she’s jumping with minimal pre rotation which is proper skating technique

Love Chen Lu! Beautiful skater and beautiful performance!
Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind FTW! Perfect music for a beautiful routine.

@@scarletfairy6161 like it or not, they are competing, so it's pretty natural to compare them
She certainly had the content to do it.
None of the judges put her ahead of Nancy, but two had her ahead of Oksana. Her program was the most complex.
She in her program bumped in the wall during her triple lutz double toe did triple lutz didn’t have room for the double toe
She’s flawless in spite of the one mistake . She’s elegant and fluid on the ice . She deserved better.
When music, interpretation, choreography, artistry and technical blended.
She is a lovely skater and I feel like she didn’t get the recognition she deserved because everyone was so focused on the Nancy and Tonya drama.
I agree. Unfortunately, the Nancy and Tonya drama overshadowed a lot of the skaters.
Fr all because of that guy
One of the few skaters that went toe to toe with Michelle Kwan artistically.

Correct, silver in front of Baiul
She couldn't win gold cuz she was 4th I. The short ..it was weird scir7ng
@wheresbaby7783 If she would have won the long program with Bauil second and Kerrigan third, she would have won the gold
the ending of the program's music was so human sacrifice under a full moon.
I love her lutz jump.
Really clean out-edge lutz, which looks very difficult.
She should've beat Nancy in my opinion, I felt like her jumps had more height.

I absolutely loved this one
Slow spin on the first turn but suddenly speed up on thr second and the third in the air. Every triple jump is stunning.

Love the costume
Simply Amazing!
this is the Gold medal skate. No clue how she got bronze
Way better jumper than Nancy or Oksana
Gold medal proformance except that one little slip up...
Lovely skater.
03:10 I love her ballet jump - 3T combination, which was effectively done in the last part of her 1995 FS (Last Emperor)
I love her Russian Splits lol, the triple toe adds extra spice
She did Great!
This performance, coupled with Surya Bonaly's falling down, are what propelled her to the bronze.

Yuka sato 3rd
