In this video series, you will follow along with 8 students as they build their own kibler kits under the tutilage of professional longrifle builders Mike Brooks and Wayne estes.
At 8am at the NMLRA Education Center in Friendship, Indiana, students arrived and began setting up for Mike Brooks' Kibler Kit Assembly Class. We've got 8 students here this week, all of various skill levels building a new rifles.
Day 1 Morning: Students are working to finish the inletting of their barrels. The Kibler Kits are a tight fit, but require some final carving at the breech to get everything flush. After about an hour everyone' breech is fit and students are adding barrel lugs. Students had a choice of the Kibler Colonial and the Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle Kit. We can't thank Kibler Longrifles enough for working to ensure these students had the necessary kits before the class started, especially in such a busy time.
As of writing, just about everyone is onto setting their hardware. I've talked with Jim but have never seen the kits in person, it's super neat seeing them come together. Students were worried it would be too easy after the minimal amount of barrel work, but the buttplates and side plates are keeping them busy!
Mike and Wayne are encouraging everyone to get the parts on and set today so they can focus on the carving, engraving and getting a nice finish for the rest of the week.
We will be just about ready to shoot by dinner time at this rate! Students are finishing up their patch boxes and fitting their ramrod pipes now, soon they’ll be fitting their locks and draw filing their barrels.
It’s wonderful to chat with each student about their connection with muzzleloading. 6/8 are building their first muzzleloader. Some are accomplishing retirement goals, others connecting with family history, and one is seeking to add some challenge to squirrel hunting season.
These might all start as the same kits, but they are influenced by the builder and their history just as any muzzleloader is.

At 26:30 l really like how the gentleman decided to finish his wooden patch box with a brass plate to tie in nicely with the brass butt plate. I’m sure it was done both ways on originals but not doing this step seems to be a trend by many who build these Kibler colonial kits. It’s a nice touch and well worth the extra effort.

I built my first flintlock last year. An English fowling piece it is. I also had an experienced builder looking over my shoulder, I am a Machinist by trade or was up until a few months ago, and I learned quite a number of new things. Unfortunately last summer the U of WA med folks told me I have ALS which explains why my right arm barely works now so I wont be building any more. But I do have a beautiful flintlock fowling piece to pass on and I built it with my own hands! (just not quite yet).

Terrible diagnosis. :-(. Glad you completed one though. If it were me I think I’d grab ahold of that beauty once a day at least and look at the beauty. They are gorgeous guns.

One day soon, perhaps medical research may yield a definitive cure for ALS, likely based on stem cell research, I sincerely hope politics do not hinder further stem cell research by enacting laws based on fundamentalist religious beliefs or philosophy.

I would have thought the NMLRA school could run to the cost of a proper breech plug spanner, using an adjustable spanner will give huge burrs on the tang! The bench also looks very flimsy for such an important association.

@zacklothamer9533. I dont think you should rely on anything this group do to be "to the book" , adjustable spanner for the breachplug, whacking the forend on the bench instead of the comb to remove the barrel, the list goes on, total amateurs teaching bad practice to first time students.

So when you say various experience levels, you also mean guys with 0 days experience? If I could take the time off from work and had the money to pay for the course and hotel and food, I would come to this course in a heartbeat. I did do some work in building a Lancaster style 45 caliber Flintlock rifle with my uncle about 10 years ago but then I moved out of Alaska and he's not able to get it built anymore with how limited he is in mobility.
