I like to paddle and fish too. Got the 119 and LOVE this boat. Super stable, tracks great, turns on a dime. I have room for a fishing crate and gear. Its pretty much a perfect solo canoe.
I know that's me as a first time canoe buyer I'm torn between buying one of these two boats !!! I love the longer Next more weight capacity and higher back seat over the Sportsman Solo but all the features on that solo and I wouldn't be hauling that much gear any way so I guess what will push me over the edge on my decision would be which of the two would be more stable in the water and I hear the Next model is somewhat faster of a canoe in the water !!! Damn !!! Decisions decisions !!!!
Initially when the next came out a few years back there was issues with the seat popping out of the tracks. Old town fixed that quickly with a running change that holds the tracks tightly to the seat
I contacted old town and they sent a second tether to strap the bars together. Before that I just used paracord to hold them together to keep the seat up.
Can I cartop that Solo 119 with a traditional foam blocks and straps? The elevation of the seat support looks like it might be prohibitive? Or can it be done? ty
Thanks for video. Looking at the Next, I have a short (5.5') bed truck with no racks on it now. What is best way to transport this securely? Seems like it might be a little long to just drop tailgate and strap down.
I have a Ford Ranger with a 5 ft bed. I open the tailgate, put the canoe in on an angle and tie it down on both ends, works fine. I also bought the Yakima HD Racks. I can put it on top or in the bed. After a long days trip, I throw it in the bed...lol Its easier.
Seriously looking at purchasing one these 2 canoes. What's the best/most effective way to secure this size boat against theft while out traveling? Obviously I won't leave it for long. But if I'm traveling and need to stop in at a grocery store or something, is there a commonly recommended locking system for a lightweight canoe when it's strapped to a roof rack? Thankyou for any input on the matter
Good Video..I really like the old town discovery 119 solo sportsman. I have question, Is any way I can add the carrying yoke on this canoe Thanks cheers
I had another guy ask me that same question today. Unfortunately on solo Canoes you really cant add a center yoke. However, the boats are so slim it is easy to pick them up and carry them over your head.
I still would pay up for another OT Pack, I love mine SO much... thanks for this compare vid though. I still think I'm gonna stay with the traditional 119 for my next boat. Mostly aesthetics for me. But I know...these new styles are catchy to most.
@@LancasterCountyMarine thanks for that agreement too. I feel the same. I just checked your site...all that inventory looks amazing! Hope you sell a bunch this season!
Would either of these be easier/faster to paddle than a 126 Loon? I'm leaning towards the 119 but I think the Next would be faster to paddle. Any suggestions? Some of the videos talk about how fast the 119 is.
Been eyeballing these two for a while. I kayak camp using a rtm tempo sot. Great kayak, pretty quick even hauling my gear. I think one of these would make a bit nicer camping canoe. I'm in central Georgia, and all we have are lazy rivers near me. Tracking is a big deal. Which of these would make a better camping canoe? A typical weekend paddle is around 40ish miles. I don't want a slug on the water. I would love some advice, never owned a canoe. Really want the open cockpit for gear and comfort.
Based on what your looking to do, the old town Next would be the better canoe. In the video we talk about camping and cargo room. The next is a solid choice for what your describing.
@@LancasterCountyMarine thank you for getting back to me. I thought it would be, but I saw comments that the sportsman paddled better in rivers. Kinda had me second guessing.

The Esquif is 42 pounds. And they do not list a weight capacity. There are almost no boats in this realm that are lighter than 42 to 50 pounds. The only thing lighter than these are kayaks youd not trust in remotely the same environment and Kevlar boats. 50 pounds is not heavy for a boat.
@@Pierre50mm It's not a big deal man. And honestly not a big difference in weight. Was only pointing it out because they are so close in weight. Both are cool little solo boats. I owned a 119 for a while and used it often on several trips. But it's weight capacity for its size and weight I felt was not all that great.
I had both boats. The Next has versatility, the 119, cannot be adjusted or modified. I really loved the Next. Not so much the Disco119, not a canoe, not a kayak, turkey bacon. Grown mans pool float
I currently have the Next. Was thinking of selling it for a sportsman. How do you find the comfort level in the sportsman? Have you taken the Next down any rivers? How did it do?
@@wingednomad8423 the Next is the most comfortable seat in the paddling universe. The sportsman cramped my buttocks in an hour. I cannot say how much I make SS my Next seat. I would never call a next a whitewater boat, so by river, I’m thinking a flat one would be fine. I had a older type shallow v hull. They newer ones seem different . So will the Next model handle not only flat water but will it handle class 1 and 2 water as well ?
Next can handle class 1 pretty well, class two is possible depending on the paddler.
Seats seem to pop out of the NEXT where the plastic dips and the rails drop. Have you had any issue with this? If so, what did you do to fix?
Initially when the next came out a few years back there was issues with the seat popping out of the tracks. Old town fixed that quickly with a running change that holds the tracks tightly to the seat

I live on the Yellowstone River. Would you Discovery Sportsman be better for paddling on the river? I have been looking at the Next canoe
It would be a slight bit more maneuverable
@@LancasterCountyMarine Thank you, I appreciate your response
thanks for the video how those in marina or rough water ? i want to get one.
Can you add a 2nd seat to the Next? Use for camping and short trips? Thanks!
Great video. Thanks. One question. Is the removable seat made so you can use it nex to the fireplace, or nex to the tent?
I have one and i have used it for this purpose often

Pickup a bed extender for your pickup

What is the msrp on the 119 Sportsman canoe?

Pick up a heavy duty security cable, about 9 foot. Wrap the cable around the seat frame and go around your crossbar. This is how I lock my boats up.

Which would be better for paddling a somewhat long along the coast with mild waves? I know none are ideal, but if I were to get one?

Can a second seat be installed for a child passenger (small 12 year old) to fish with me?

We do have marsh camo for the DIscovery 119 Solo Sportsman, and a NEXT in gray!
Way are they hard to get Alberta Canada.

Methinks I should give Santa a "heads up" about how 'needed' the 'next' is . . . .
What is better for on a river? What is better for on a lake?
People don't talk like that around here
Anyone put a trolling motor on it
Discovery 119. Great litte solo... but too heavy, 50 lbs. The Esquif Adirondack is 38 lbs.
