- The Armenian Church cannot be included in the list of apostolic churches , for it was founded in the first third of the fourth century by Gregory the Illuminator, also known as Gregory the Parthian, who, needless to say, was not among the 12 disciples of Christ
In fact, the Armenian Church had never been called ‘apostolic’ up until recently. It was known as the Armenian Gregorian Church, or simply the Gregorian Church. This is exactly how it was called by Armenian historians.

The hatred for Armenia is almost palpable... a. Armenian church isnt monophysite rather miaphysite...b.by apostolic its meant that the teaching didnt stray from the teaching of the apostles ...c. as an Oriental Orthodox i find ur tone to my Armenian brothers quite offensive 🇪🇹❤ 🇦🇲
Thanks for the support brother. Long live the church of Ethiopia!
Those of us who know what's going on in Ethiopia are always praying for you. May God give you the strength to persevere and bring an end to your labors.
Armenian Christianity came from st. Jude and St. Bartholomew=legitimate and valid title of apostolic.
Typical Azerbaijani bullshit. Allow me to dismantle it meticulously.
1. The Armenian church didn't begin with Gregory the illuminator, it was only under him that it became the state religion. But there were Christian communities in Armenia going back much earlier, possibly even to the first century during the apostolic age. Long before Gregory, there were Syriac missionaries coming into Armenia from the south and Greek missionaries coming in from the west. So there was a church in Armenia from very early on. The only thing that happened in the fourth century is that it became a state church, the first state church I might add. Let's not Forget that there is also the church tradition of Armenia being evangelized by the disciples Thaddeus and Bartholomew. And this tradition wasn't made up by Armenians, it comes from non-Armenian church historians.
2. The title of apostolic is shared by all the old pre-protestant churches. For example, it is common to use the phrase "one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church". The title comes from the conviction that our churches continue the tradition handed down to us from the apostles. So even if Armenia had not been directly evangelized by apostles of Christ, we still inherited those same teachings by way of missionaries. Therefore we are an apostolic church.
If you're going to try to dip your feet in ecclesiastical history, at least put in the time and effort to research terminology like apostolic.
Perhaps best described as an interesting hypothesis.......
Lies and more LIES
Please ignore this unfortunate article. Completely false and I am not in any way Armenian.
Yeah I second your claim and I'm not even orthodox.
Armenian Church was founded by Apostles Bartholomew and Thaddeus in the 1st century AD. Gregory the Illuminator made the Church nationalized and accepted by the government of Armenian. The Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Maghaqia Ormanian compiled a list of bishops going back all the way to the Apostles in the 18th-19th century.
"he Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Maghaqia Ormanian compiled a list of bishops going back all the way to the Apostles in the 18th-19th century."
Bit late for it to be believable
It’s pretty funny to say that the church of Constantinople was founded in the first century when Constantinople didn’t even exist. And it is even funnier to justify this position by using Soviet historians.
It is normal for azerbaijanis to make a mockery of themselves by trying to slander Armenians
@Kerimcan Ak There was a Bishop in Rome before Peter ever went there, Linus. As a matter of fact, Peter went TO the church of Rome that already existed but was later placed in the list as first bishop of Rome.
@Kerimcan Ak Peter was Apostle to Rome and founded the church there, but was never Bishop (Episcopos/Overseer) because he did not stay there and oversee it from 30 to 67. The Apostolic Constitutions state that Linus, ordained by Paul was the first Bishop of Rome. Later the Roman Catholic church changed the order to add Peter who had been Apostle to Rome. The Orthodox Church does hold that Peter and Paul founded the church in Rome but they never fulfilled the meaning of the word Bishop, but rather "Apostle." Look at a copy of the Apostolic Constitution which lists Linus as first Bishop of Rome. The Roman church went in contradiction to the Apostolic Constitution in removing Linus as the Bishop of Rome during that 30-69 AD.
@Kerimcan Ak Not true. First, Peter was not referred to as Bishop of Rome until after the fact. The "cherrypicked" source is the Apostolic Constitution which was the second century rubrics of the Church as handed down by the apostles. It is considered to be on the level of an Ecumenical Council. Rome would still be "Petrine" since he was the Apostle, along with Paul who founded Rome, though Paul ordained Linus as Bishop. Also Peter was ACTUALLY the bishop of Antioch-he was a resident overseer which is what Bishop (Episkopos) literally means. He was never the resident overseer of Rome.
If the Othodox are neither catholic or orthodox, and the catholic are neither also, who still imagines having apostolic succession has any validity? Surely if God should raise up a church in rhe remotest place it would be apostolic only if it held to the teachings of the apostles.
Sorry brother but you said two big mistakes... The Church of Alexandria was created by Saint Mark who was not a apostle but disciple of Saint Peter. The Church of Armenia was founded by Thadee and Bartholome. Its a apostolique Church.
Nice try. The official title of the Armenian Church is, “One Holy Universal Apostolic Orthodox Armenian Church. The Armenian Church professes the Divine/ Human nature of Jesus Christ as one undivided nature, which makes it miaphysite not monophysite which the Armenian Church alongside the Universal Church condemned as heresy. The Georgian Church broke away from the Armenian Church to the Byzantine family of Churches. St. Krikor the Illuminator helped convert the pagan king Drtad to the Christians faith in order to stop persecutions against the Christians of Armenia. Question, who’s interests do you serve? The Turks, Azeris or Bolsheviks?
This guy is a pure joke !
This line of thinking could literally be applied to any church claiming Apostolic Succession lol. Even the catholic church could be disputed like this. Please do some basic research first
Armenians have died for Christanity than other nationalities in recent history so post mortem not required
The Ottoman Turks put the Armenian Christians through Hell during WWI. If only it was talked about more 🙏
the soviet historical encyclopedia? cuz soviets never lie hahaha
Armenians were called ‘the original defenders of Christianity ✝️’ / because they were the first Christian nation that fought, killed and DIED for Christianity in the name of GOD
I am a Roman Catholic. The Armenian church is Apostolic. so what if the church fathers brought the faith there? the roots are apostolic. i cannot believe at this unprovoked attack on the Armenian church.
Thanks for the support brother. I pray that we may be one church again one day.
Also the Armenian Church is not Monophysite, we are Miaphysite. Two natures: Fully God and Fully Man united in the incarnation of Jesus Christ.
u made one mistake here. yes, we are miaphysites, but we do not believe in 2 natures but 1 incarnate nature. we believe that Jesus Christ is 100% Divine and 100% Human, which these 2 distinct elements are united and cannot be separated into one nature. Conclusion: 2 distinct elements, that once coming together to form Jesus Christ, cannot be separated; therefore, Jesus Christ has 1 nature.
@Hayots Lernashkharh If I understand you correctly, Jesus himself would be the nature. If there were 2 natures then it would be split with one solely being divine and the other soley human.
Whole lot of falsehood in this video
Does your Russian sources let you to know about Armenian early history😂, I am impressed 🍭
It's Soviet, not Russian tho.
Love how all the sources would have an interest in undermining religion and or armenia
Blah blah blah azerbaijani provocateur. You are not Christians. Don't meddle in our Christian religion. Armenia is the first country to adopt Christianity, long before the Great Schism
No not armenia the antioch is acts 11:26
@@schizofren_ia I spoke about a well-known fact. Armenia is the first country to adopt Christianity as the only religion, not the first country where believers in Jesus Christ began to call themselves Christians. And Antioch was not a state btw. Please be more literate and don't be so envious
@@shmelikov Not a country but it is still the first bastion and peter was a bishop of it, and don’t insult me on literacy; I have not insulted you.
@@schizofren_ia I am fed up with azerbaijani fakes. And sometimes I have to argue with Christians, which is not my favorite activity. Because I support all Christians anywhere in the world, regardless of denomination
@@schizofren_ia Dummy, Antioch is a City. Armenia was/is a Kingdom or Nation - and it was the first kingdom/nation to become Christian. Dumb evangelicals won't use a basic google search.
You say that the Orthodox Church of Constantinople was an Orthodox church founded in the first century, but the city of Constantinople was not founded until the fourth century. Please correct the video.
Using soviet "historians" as sources is funny 😅😅
Don't forget the church of Rome in that list of apostolic churches. Even if you disagree with it, it's still one of the most important apostolic churches in history (even ignoring the theological aspect of it).
Azeri propaganda page
Lies as usual
Putting aside legends about Saint Thaddeus and Bartholomew - term Apostolic here is one of general qualities of Church as whole - so each singular church community that consider itself part of the Church is not only entitled but also obliged to those aspects: being Apostolic - because all bishops came from Apostolic line of ordinance, Catholic - being open for all people of all nations and whole world, Orthodox - preaching right doctrine, Holy - being mystical body of Christ.
Various historical events lead to Armenians using Apostolic in their name, Roman Catholics to use Catholic, Byzantine Greeks to emphase Orthodox part - but every of them declare all of them
Azeri propoganda
Nothing good comes out of russia. Moreover russians did not exist till 10th century
Every Orthodox knows the first Christian civilization we’re Ethiopians.
Acts 8 shows this, as well as historians have identified Christian remains in the Aksum Kingdom which predates Arminian claim.
Armenians weren't the first christian people, but Armenia was the first to nationalize the church, accepting Christianity as the official state religion in 301 AD, the first country to ever do so.
No Christian Churches can be proven to be "apostolic churches" it's just tradition, not history.
Some traditions are historically reliable.
