I too am wanting to expand & raise a few turkeys but will probably use a Versatube (big box stores sell their carports) frame covered in Red Brand dog fence with the 2inx2in wire spacing. The larger frame will allow for larger doors to accommodate a tractor. The frames are rated to last 20 years.

Thanks for all your great advice. 👍🏻 We moved here from FL and live west of Ft. Worth. I learn a lot from you about how to live and work in the great state of Texas. We have a flock of chickens that need a bigger home and you're right the $ of lumber is nuts. So I'm going to check out the other buildings you mentioned. BTW, thanks also for the tip on the wagon. It's awesome. 👌

Pete I bought an 8x10 coop for around 1500.00 nice coop then added on a 10x12 run plus they have the space under the house so ground space is like 18x 22. House could hold 30 birds easy. Then I made some roost in the run area they rather sleep out there in run area. I have wire buried around all this area plus enclosed on the top with wire and tin over that for shade. So when winter comes I close up the north side to keep wind out. I looked the other day and there were only 6 birds in the house. I do have 4 premiere one nets I let them come out in that area during the day. Love my chickens and thinking of getting more.

Oh you got all the cool stuff! I got 28 more chicks on sale for $1 each this summer. We are up to 45 I think. 😆 Great decision getting the chickens! It will be nice to have all that food put up! We raise rabbits for most of our meat for us and the pets.

You ain't lying about the price of lumber! I just spent ≈$700 to build a 8'x20'x7' chicken run that I modeled off of yours. I would have spent at least that to build the coop had i not been able to pick up most of the lumber for it at work.
A slave to your job? Sound like you worked in the plants like me.
I'm trying to get to your level of food security, but I'm lacking big league. Gonna go for a garden this spring.
Keep on keeping on, from Louisiana!

No joke on lumber prices. I built a 6x6 pump house in central Texas last month and spent $700 and I already had the main studs in place. I also just bought some lumber for a covered area in my backyard in the Houston area and spend $70 on 4 2x6s and a few 2x4s.
I'll be interested to see how the shed works, I want to expand our coop as well and get more chickens

Sounds like a great plan Pete, we converted our shed into a coop 10 x 10 cost a lot less to do it that way.
We had most of the wood to build in out on the inside, 2x4x8 are about 7 bucks!
So we are gonna do the same with our run as well gotta get it done before next spring.
Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out for you, will be following you to watch the how it all turns out!

Pete, sounds good. I considered buying the additional runs for the chicks too! I use a tractor to get the chicks out on grass, but that is a nuisance. Expanding the run and selectively letting them out would be better!

I have a freeze dryer and it is wonderful!! When I have leftovers of a meal I freeze it flat and keep it in the freezer till I have enough to fill the trays and then I freeze dry those meals and I have them when I need a fast meal. I am finding such good ideas to freeze dry on the you tube channel "John in bibs". I would love to sell my freeze dryer and buy one of the new ones since I have only solar power in my home and the new ones take less time to freeze dry and therefore use less power. I can't wait to see all the things you do and find out with your freeze dryer. Thank you for your videos!!

We pasture-raise heritage (Narragansett) turkeys and American Bresse Chickens. A few suggestions for anyone getting into raising poultry:
    1. For meat turkeys, go with broad breasted whites. The meat isn’t the best, but there’s a lot of it, and no black pinfeathers to hassle with.
    2. For meat chickens, choose something like the Red Ranger. They grow slowly, but are much hardier than the frankenbirds.
    3. Don’t raise chickens and turkeys on the same ground, to help avoid disease and parasites.
    4. Control parasites with a periodic dose of Ivermectin in their drinking water.
    5. When harvesting, bleed them out, don’t sever their windpipe or lop off their heads.
    6. Best scald temperature is 140 degrees. If necessary, increase scald time, NOT scald temperature.
    7. Remove their food source at least 18 hours prior to harvest. Allow them to have water.
    8. If you have dogs, grind the poultry heads, necks, feet, liver, heart and (cleaned) gizzards for Fido. Dogs are fine with raw bones, but NOT with cooked bones.
    9. If you see the birds eating feathers, it’s a signal they aren’t getting enough protein.
    10. Euthanize sick birds immediately. Don’t try to be Doctor Doolittle. Most veterinarians haven’t a clue about poultry health.
    11. Don’t try to incubate eggs from hybrid chickens. Garbage in, garbage out.
    12. Cheap Infra-red heat lamps and holders are a waste of money. If you need heat, go with the bulbs and PRIMA HEAT LAMPS from Premier1supplies(dot)com
    13. Get a gallon on TEK-TROL disinfectant. Mix up a solution to fill a “boot box” placed outside the entrance to the pens. ALWAYS wear rubber boots and ALWAYS step into the bootbox to disinfect yourself before entering or leaving the pens.
    14. Incubating eggs can be extremely challenging. Our incubators are German made “Grumbach”... costing close to $5,000 each. Even with these zoo quality machines, a successful hatch is not always achieved. It took our Narragansett breeding flock years of adaptation to produce eggs that would reliably hatch at our altitude.
