    Prefer talking through the project over a music video, but still a gorgeous piece

    Nice, Nick! Love the way you cut the ends first then wedged and taped them. I have a box build coming up I'll try that out. Great grain on that top.

    Man that's a nice box. I like the way you cut the short ends for the box top and then the long ends after you added the spacers, makes way more sense to cut the box top like that. And the piece of scrap for routing out the narrow mortise for the hinges, so many tips to pick up on thanks for sharing.

    This is a really beautiful box. I think the only change I would make would be to flip the bottom panel (or to have the bottom panel just flat. I'm thinking that if you were to use this for something like pencils, they would often get stuck on the corner rabbets along the edges.

    Nice clean lines! I think the speed of the vid was ok, as it was a straightforward relatively simple build. It added to the entertainment value without detracting too much from the educational aspect. A good contrast with your other videos as well. Nice to change it up from time to time.

    The ADD is paying off my man! That was fun, it was like a woodworking workout video. My little woodshop Richard Simmons sweating to the disco music. : ) Build it baby!
    Isn't it funny that unlike glass blowing or sculpture or so many other crafts, the only way we can make a project in woodworking fun to watch is show it at hyper-speed. The box turned out great. Laters.

    I just finishing up a pencil box (sliding lid) for my wife's birthday. The lid is figured walnut with maple sides. I did a test on the walnut (scrap)... to use Spray Lacquer or wipe on poly. Spray was so much easier, but I didn't feel I could control any clumping (that might happen) into the slide groove. So I opted for the wipe on poly. My test though, I didn't see much difference visually.

    • @NickFerry
      @NickFerry  8 років тому

      interesting - spray is easier for sure - probably my two go to finishes

      Yep, too fast to follow. The first time you do something repetitive show it at normal speed, preferably with some explanation of what you are doing and why. The repetitions can be shown about 4x as fast.

    Nice project Nick. I always love the combination of Spalted Maple and Walnut. Couple quick questions. You "separated" box half on your table saw jig and half just using the fence. If you had to do it again would you do same or just use the fence? Lastly, when you open the box and see the amount of rabbet that is shown in the maple panel, was that what you were going for? (to my eye it seems a little larger). Thanks much!

    • @NickFerry
      @NickFerry  8 років тому

      thank you Chet - I'd probably do it again like that - when it was up on end it just seemed more stable that way - the rabbet was left large intentionally just for a different design element - boxes are a dime a dozen so I try and mix up some of the features every time I make one
