This was the production that decisively made David McVicar’s reputation as a leading and inspired opera director, who could achieve miracles on the smallest of budgets. The starkness and focus of the Scottish Opera Idomeneo remains vividly in the mind after 26 years, but sadly it was neither video-ed nor broadcast. This is a recording of the final performance of the opening run in Glasgow. I am to blame for a few bars missing from Act 3, for which I apologise. The blame for the absence of “Torna la pace” lies elsewhere.
