For all those who may not know, calculating percentages for tips is really easy! All you do is move the decimal over once to the left and that's your 10 percent (I.e. 10 percent of say $23 is $2.30) and if you wanted to figure out what 20 percent is in order to tip someone, you just double that (10%+10%=20% , so you just add $2.30+$2.30 which equals $4.60) Quick and easy!
+Fly me to the Moon O_O I live in California as well and I have never known anyone to tip less than 15% unless the service was poor. Most would say 20% pretty is standard and 10% just seems insulting in the majority of situations.
I never thought about tipping a tattoo artist by giving him flowers or cookies, that's adorable! I'm sure I'll do it soon haha EDIT 4 YEARS LATER: Now I'm actually a tattoo artist!!!! and have been gifted with chocolate by my clients 😍
When I got my first tattoo I brought a book with me to have something to do. I picked it up and started reading about an hour in and I managed to concentrate for like 30 min before I dropped it. Afterwards my tattoo artist told me he was impressed I managed to focus that long. Apparently a lot of first-timers bring books or stuff like that, but almost no one is able to focus on them haha. He also told me he tried watching family guy once when he got tattooed, but he couldn't even focus on that. I guess it's the stress on your body that makes your brain all mushy and you can't concentrate on anything ^^
Bottled Water Arizona Tea to keep my sugar level up Light Pajama Bottoms for leg tattoos Oversized T-Shirt for arm/back tattoos And of course a Snack of your choice
I think you're a tattoo artists dream client. You think about everything. I like to bring ; cold hard cash for the same reason you do...baked goods (vegan style also), water, Clif Bars, baby wipes and natural deodorant (for freshening up during bathroom breaks if needed), my ipad, iphone and chargers, valet money since we can't keep feeding a parking meter all day, a soft bulky shirt (to cuddle for awkward positions while being worked on and I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. This series of videos are a great idea =)
1. I always make sure to have music with me. If the store has music playing I might just listen to theirs. I like to sort of do a musical meditation(can help during the more painful parts) 2. Always have cash on me to pay(most places I go to prefer cash) 3. Have a drink that can replace the sugars in my body. 4. When getting work on my arms, a sleeveless shirt(running shirt or basketball jersey). Also something I can pull over myself and wear one arm and let the other side protect the tattoo from too much sun exposure(zip-up hoodie or a baseball jersey). 5. A positive attitude. If my artist talks to me and respond like a grinch then it could put him/her in a bad mood and then reflect on the tattoo itself. Being friendly will make the artist wants to do the tattoo well. That's my Top 5
Oh gosh I wish all my clients were like you aw you're so lovely and considerate hehe!!!!💓💜💕 also tipping isn't a thing in Australia(in any industry), but I always get tips off my American and Canadian clients..it always catches me off guard making me super bashful:3

+Ria Von Valentino I'm really glad you say that because I live in the UK and I was like, "Wait what you have to TIP?? omg I've never tipped! What if they all thought I was super rude??"
I know a lot of tattoo parlors dont allow "food or drink" but my tattoo artist.. lets me chew gum during my session. Its like a body stress reliever! I can get gnaw away the pain ahah and I always bring the brand of gum he likes and we chew gum together haha and talk about nirvana
uhh, I would die without snacks :D I always bring so much stuff, sparkly water, juice, chocolate, a banana, something salty, maybe eggs or cucumber, ... :D and a book - I'm reading most of the time during a session if the body position allows it
Dear Quack, Today I'm getting my second tattoo. It's becoming a special little ritual for me to watch this video right before I head out the door to get my tattoos. It reminds me of anything I forgot to bring, and also brings me into a good state of mind to know you've gone through the same process I have! Love you!
Well, if you lived in my country and with its average salary, you'd never ever tip 50 $. Imo tattoo price is high and fair enough for tipping your artist, it's not even done in where I leave and tattoo artists earn enough money anyway.
Never heard of a UK tattoo artist expecting to be tipped and I never have. I don't see them being given gifts either but I notice they all seem to like high-sugar snacks in my local place and they're all so nice I'm going to bake something for them next time.
+cynicat I'm not 100% sure but I think you HAVE to tip in the US, you have to tip for everything you buy. I live in France and I know people don't tip that much, it's just generous people or when the work is well done etc. Plus, in France (maybe the UK too, I don't know) the tipping price is already in the normal price
Louise In the US tax is added at the point of purchase, which is strange but that's different from tipping. In the UK service is often included in restaurants otherwise tipping 10% is normal - same for hairdressers, unless they are the salon owner. These are low paid occupations and the employee does not set the price. This makes them different from tattooists, builders, plumbers, electricians, decorators etc who set their own prices and don't expect to be tipped on top.
+Louise It's not like a required thing here, but wages for people who work in the service industry are so low here, that most workers live off of tips. 20% is considered a standard tip :)
Oriana Senior Oh I thought so… I've heard (at least from someone who were at an airport in Florida i think) that at the moment to pay at the restaurant, they asked her if she wanted to tip 10, 20 or 30%
I love the idea of bringing flowers! I often find books/comics/illustrations that I think my tattoo artist would love & take those to appointments as little gifts. I also bring him things for his cats, which sounds weird now that I'm typing it... But he's in love with his cats. :)
I bring my artists a gift all the time! My last tattoo artist loves candy so I brought her chocolate. In Australia we don't do tipping so gifts for my artist or a good review is what I always do
I tend to leak a fair amount after my tattoos. I buy the cheap athletic sweat bands and wear right beneath the piece and it catches all the fluid and I just wear a long sleeve or pants.
I think a really good thing to bring is a stress ball or something like that. I typically dont need it during the beginning but when you get down to the last bit and youre feeling the pain, having the stress ball takes my mind off of it cause I can just squeeze the hell out of it.

Headphones and great playlist! Something to concentrate on besides the pain or irritation. I also like a small stress ball to squeeze so I can just have my hand doing the tensing up and make sure the rest of my body is relaxed. And something not bring but to practice- relaxing your whole body, consciously, from head to toe every few minutes. Ask yourself, "is my face tensed up, and I shrugging my shoulders, etc", and actively let that tension go. It hurts so much more when your entire body is ramped up!!
hey quack! i’ve been watching you for six years + tomorrow i get my first tattoo >:) v v stoked, and super confident knowing i’ve got all these years of your tips under my belt. thank you so much for all you did on this channel!
These are all great tips. Black clothing, water bottle, no shoes... and sunglasses. I find sunglasses extremely useful when the tattoo artist is using any sort of lamp for additional lighting.
@@sararedbride9728 yeah the country is pretty shit tbh. But tattoo artistry has a large gap in wage, like many professions. You can make 10k a year or make 500k. In other countries, the tip is already represented in the price of the service, which is how it should be. And because it’s not, it’s become a game of over tippers and under tippers, creating a pretty standard wage across the board anyways.
@@rigdigwus we’re not all perfect. Not using a calculator doesn’t make you superior to others. I knew a guy who was dumb as a rock but could do quite a few math equations in his head pretty quickly.
Thank you for this! I have my first tattoo appointment on Friday so this was super helpful! I'm usually that person who just walks in to get a tattoo so I'm super excited for Friday. Love your videos!!
I am from Europe and tipping is not really a thing where I live and the artists I go to are not too cofortable with tipping of any kind, so me and my friend alsways bring them food (lunch etc.) to the studio and they really love it since a lot of the time things can get busy and there is not too much time for a meal. :)
When you so don't relate to the tipping culture and paying with cash. Like here in Sweden I think most artists prefer if you pay with card (maybe even swish), if they insist on cash it's probably something fishy going on xD
Your tattoo videos are so informative!! I'm getting my first on the 2nd of sept ( 2 weeks away! ) and it's great to know all these things. Keep up the great work!!
if u looking for tattoo in Ohio my dad owns a shop in canton called lcc tattoo supply search them on Google and yelp they r amazing and have already been in a news paper
Whoa you get really prepared lol I just bring a drink and my purse because I take septa everywhere. & All the places I've been to accept credit cards, I never carry cash in case I get robbed, especially if I'm carrying $400 all around the city but there's always an option to tip with my credit card. I never know if I'm tipping enough lol.
If you're getting your hip tattooed it's a good idea to put on a bikini instead of panties. Bring some tape and untie the side you want tattooed (only works if you have a bikini with strings on the sides), then tape the bikini to your body and you don't have to reveal your hidden treasures. Just a tip I got from a friend. She never thought about the fact she had to remove her panties while getting a hip tattoo and she found it really awkward to cover herself with just her hands.x)
Just one to point out it's probably best to check on what the shop prefers in regards to paying with cash. The shop I go to prefers cards, they don't like to handle cash, but another place I've been to prefers it.
That's so true. My tattoo artists are always so excited when I bring them my vegan brownies with white chocolatechips. ☺️ I love it. Would never go to an appointment without a treat for the tattoo artist.. ❤️ Great video! I have an appointment in two weeks to get my sleeve coloured & I'll def bring a flannel this time..
What do you wear or bring to wear when you are getting tattooed on the side at your hip/very upper thigh (like where your underwear is)? Im getting a disney tattoo there, so stoked😭
I tend to be very anti social when I am getting tattooed. I bring my ipod (yes I have some anchient technology here) and play music really loudly. I use noise cancelling headsets so as not to bother the artist, I simply need to get to my "happy place" to be able to zone out whatever is happening. Oddly enough I have been considering bringing my sketch book or something (knitting needles and wool for all I care) next time, not as a way to be rude or anything, more just so that I can keep my hands and eyes busy, cause watching them do the tattoo brings the pain right back into focus for me.
I feel like I watched a video about you saying that you didn't like people asking you this but.... do you know of any shops in Chicago that have a well rounded staff of artists? I'm looking to get a couple of different pieces done and prefer to stay consistent with the places I go
I recommend Speakeasy Custom Tattoo in Bucktown... great crew of artists with a lot of different styles. Sean Adams & Jennifer Trok both do amazing work. :)
My tattoo artist doesn't usually take tips (you have to get annoyingly pushy before she'll accept) so I like the idea of bringing a gift because then how can she say no and I still feel like I gave her something.
Just got my first tattoo done and had no idea about tips. I was already getting a massive deal, friend of a friend....but I did give him 60$ instead of 50$, so that's good ☺️
I have to take a snickers bar with me especially if the tattoo is going to take a few hours. I can get quite lightheaded and dizzy so a snickers bar helps
So I got my first tattoo a few days ago and I love it. My artist was really nice and did a great job. I loved him and would definitely go back to him if I get any more tattoos. The problem is that I did not know that tipping was the custom. I didn't tip, but I feel bad and I want him to know how happy I am with what he did. Should I go back to the shop and tip him? Or would that be weird? Should I just let it go? I don't know what to do.
So glad tips are not "mandatory" in australia.15% my ass ! Since i have a forge as a hobby at home i made my tattooist a folded, engraved hilt, samurai sword because he specialises in irezumi.
I do like to tip my artist and I don’t get those who don’t. I don’t go by an exact percentage but I average tip $60-$100 depending on the artist and what was done.
Do u have to eat while u get your tattoo ?? Im about to get my first one in a couple days & i don't know anything about tattoos , like do u have to eat while u get it?? What if you're not hungry? can u eat something sugary before you go in ?
I made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for my artist and the tattoo studio that I went to! I had no idea it was a common practice. I just really like to make things for people. Do you happen to know your Myers Briggs type? I really think you are INFP. Bringing cookies is totally an INFP thing ot do. :)
I’m planning on getting my first tattoo soon and I was wondering if it was normal to bring like a little stuffed animal or pillow to squeeze??? I’m the type of person where cuddles fix everything but like I don’t wanna be that weird kid you know……?
If am paying $3,000 for a tattoo am not going to tip. But I have brought cookies or donuts to the shop for them. I got Deadpool nipple pasties for my chest piece I couldn't find something else to cover/expose me enough so I got those and a tank top to pull down.
What would you recommend wearing that's simple if you're getting a tattoo like on your side around under your armpit like above where the bra side would be? Do u think just a normal tank top w open sides would be ok?
I have no idea how much to save for my tattoo I want its kinda big I want it to cover my back shoulder. Could you (Or have you already?) do a video on your tattoos and how much they cost?? I feel like straight up asking is kinda rude but I just want a ball park estimate on how much I should be saving.
And what if I’m on a super tight budge. I’ve been saving up for a tattoo for a while and am putting in my Christmas money. So I may have $200 for the tattoo, and it think that’s how much it’s going to be. I like to tip well but I’m worried I won’t have the money to tip that well
I feel like I've heard you answer this before, so my apologies in advance, but do you take Advil or Tylenol before you get tattooed? I've heard people say you should for your first because pain stuff but I've also heard it thins your blood so you'll typically bleed more. Opinions?
+Allison Selman I was told by my artist to not take any pain meds until after the session is done. I think most people will simply say "Suck it up buttercup" // " If you're concerned about the pain, you aren't meant to get a tattoo." It's pretty sound advice, really.

I have to take a snickers bar with me especially if the tattoo is going to take a few hours. I can get quite lightheaded and dizzy so a snickers bar helps
I like to bring Sprees or Smarties to keep my energy and sugar up!
omg the sock tip was very useful! Thank you!
I love the gift idea. I’ll probably get my tattoo earring a bouquet of sunflowers when I see him next week :3
MugglebornGryffindor if you want him to tattoo you again, go back and tip!!!
This was very helpful! You seem very sweet, I love your idea of giving a gift for the artist. ❤
I think a twenty percent tip is standard. Two dollars for every ten dollars spent. I like to do between 20 and 30 percent.
So glad tips are not "mandatory" in australia.15% my ass ! Since i have a forge as a hobby at home i made my tattooist a folded, engraved hilt, samurai sword because he specialises in irezumi.
I like to bring my phone, and headphones. I'll watch youtube, or listen to music to kinda distract myself. Water and a lite snack is essential.
Hi quack! Can you refresh this video?
This was really helpful! Especially since I'll be starting on my sleeve in two weeks :D Now I can prepare!
I know you talk about what to wear for getting your top half tattooed, but what about hips and upper thighs?
Please tell me where you got those cute socks with the bears on them? Aww!
I love you so much! You are an inspiration for me since I started youtube!
I got a thigh piece last year, I just had to walk about 200m to get to the car, but my leg started bleeding down to my ankle
I do like to tip my artist and I don’t get those who don’t. I don’t go by an exact percentage but I average tip $60-$100 depending on the artist and what was done.
Could you please do a tips/advice before you get your first tattoo video :)
Do u have to eat while u get your tattoo ?? Im about to get my first one in a couple days & i don't know anything about tattoos , like do u have to eat while u get it?? What if you're not hungry? can u eat something sugary before you go in ?
The gift idea is hella cute, hmmm
I made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for my artist and the tattoo studio that I went to! I had no idea it was a common practice. I just really like to make things for people. Do you happen to know your Myers Briggs type? I really think you are INFP. Bringing cookies is totally an INFP thing ot do. :)
These are really helpful!
such a good video! cant wait for the next ep :)x
I’m planning on getting my first tattoo soon and I was wondering if it was normal to bring like a little stuffed animal or pillow to squeeze??? I’m the type of person where cuddles fix everything but like I don’t wanna be that weird kid you know……?
How painful was either side of you ribs I really want it but will be my first tattoo and I’ve been waiting for years
Lol, I did the same thing. Bought some socks from Daiso.
Feel weird for asking, but what are the set of magazines to your above left, our right on the bookshelf?
If it’s a multi-session tattoo...should I tip after every session?
Thanks!!!
hey hey you !
love your new tattoo is so nice & the colours waoohh amazing.
always nice to see you
kiss kiss & love 😘😘
Nicole
Your slipper socks are so cute!
Thank you for all the information! Very useful (:
Your videos are so helpful
awe @Qcknd ur so frickn qt 🌼🌼🌼😭😭😭💞💞💞
I have no idea how much to save for my tattoo I want its kinda big I want it to cover my back shoulder. Could you (Or have you already?) do a video on your tattoos and how much they cost?? I feel like straight up asking is kinda rude but I just want a ball park estimate on how much I should be saving.
Hmm I would say maybe like $400-$500 is a good amount to save :)
Maybe pop in to the artist you want to go to (or email) and ask them for a rough quote! It shouldn't be seen as rude if you're gentle with your words.
Theres like 5 tattoo shops in my town that i can think of.
And what if I’m on a super tight budge. I’ve been saving up for a tattoo for a while and am putting in my Christmas money. So I may have $200 for the tattoo, and it think that’s how much it’s going to be. I like to tip well but I’m worried I won’t have the money to tip that well
I LOVE your tattoos!
I love to bring headphones with me and listen to some kind of music device or music on my phone. I just zen out
do you wanna know what i take to my tattoo appointments?....Myself..... thats it
My tattoo artist always has water but the last time he only had monster, it was great lol
When you said don't take any drugs what about prescription meds?
You're such a beautiful person
x
I feel like I've heard you answer this before, so my apologies in advance, but do you take Advil or Tylenol before you get tattooed? I've heard people say you should for your first because pain stuff but I've also heard it thins your blood so you'll typically bleed more. Opinions?
+Allison Selman I was told by my artist to not take any pain meds until after the session is done. I think most people will simply say "Suck it up buttercup" // " If you're concerned about the pain, you aren't meant to get a tattoo." It's pretty sound advice, really.
Oh wow, I always just bring my phone and the money to pay lol
CHU I"ve used numbing spray on my last tat, Worked great and numbed for half an hour
