Juan Roman Riqueleme is also a fellow Argentinian and one of the best Argentinian midfielders to play the sport. He’s also scored incredible Free kicks in his career as a midfielder and is known as one of the best to do it.
I remember being a kid following la liga because of barca and Because of that I got put on to villareal and Riquelme and Forlan. At that moment i didnt realize how good of a team Villareal had. Now as a 24 year old i can appreciate that.
The background between Riquelme and Van Gaal was that Riquelme's skills was better putted to use when he played as a playermaker midfield, free of position or tactics restriction, and moving by his own criteria on the field. That's how good he was, like having a coach inside the field, playing with you. Van Gaal, known as a strict and structured tactician, got the forest covered by a tree, and failed to see the benefits that Riquelme gave to the team, ordering to play on the left only, and strangling Riquelme's capabilities. Whenever Riquelme move a little off of that task, Van Gaal said to Riquelme "you are messy, you do other things but what i told you to do". After some matches, even with spectacular perfomances, Van Gaal put Riquelme, a player that any team would like to have on the field, on the bench.
Some people say that, besides the fact that Van Gaal doesn't like midfield playmakers, also doesn't like southamericans. I think he just doesn't like southamerican football style and he's rigid and strict about that, even capable of throwing away any advantage that a playmaker can contribute, no matter how big this advantage is.
In this context, in the week previous to the match, asked about Messi, Van Gaal said "he doesn't play when the rival is attaking, so we have an advantage there. And if we go to penalties, i think we have also an advantage there".
to finish the context, is not well seen in football to go with the mouth before a match. It is seen as disrespectful. And there we have Messi doing the hand pose "topo gigio" after his penalty goal, right in front of the netherlands bench. The pose with which Riquelme celebrated his goals.

Also, LVG kicked out Rivaldo from the team, who was arguably the best player in the world at that time or at least top 3 for sure. After amazing WC he did this to him and then ruined RIquelme's european career. LVG deserves every hate he gets but I still respect him, he made his mark in football.

As am American living in the Netherlands, I was just plainly ashamed at the Dutch media for talking so negative about Argentina before the tournament started. They pick out world class players like Messi, previous target used to be Ronaldo, and talk about the player, his countery, family etc. I don't speak French, but just to enjoy the atomosphere I watched the final on a French TV channel, just to get away from the typical Dutch negativity. Congrats to Qatar for hosting a great world cup while all these civilized, decadent societies had an agenda for a sport that brings people together. Politics should not mic with sports.

The surplus in height the Dutch were so proud of, is concentrated stupidity. The Argentinians shut up, composed themselves, concentrated on the penalties, and let the goals speak for them. Once the objective achieved... then, they talked back, oh! yes they talked alright, not especially in nice way. By the way, the Dutch, so proud of their height differences, deserved it 100%, and more.

Man didn't let in a single south american in his line up regardless of which country they were from.
Benched them all with a passion, Rivaldo, Riquelme, Di Maria, Falcao. And that cost him his managerial career at club level. Him, his ideas and philosophy was not wanted anywhere after his failure at barça. You can't deny that after 2002 only dutch national team kept faith in him.
